It seems from August employers will have to pay pension and national insurance contributions so firms are increasing in the number of redundancies.

Of the 9m furloughed how many do you think will lose their jobs before 2021? More than half at least?

You just never know. My cousin works in what was just a few months ago a booming industry. Yesterday she was made redundant as that industry has completely disappeared in one fell swoop. It may return, but not for a good while if all the staff have been let go.

Even necessary jobs: Who knows what will become of teaching or education in general. It may be all screens at home in the blink of an eye.

notimagain · 10/07/2020 11:43

When advising my dc about career choices I ask them to consider amongst other things what people couldn't do without. They came up with .. transport.

I take it you mean public transport, freight or similar? There are plenty of essential workers in some areas of transportation who are very much at risk of being made redundant.

Checkthemeaning · 10/07/2020 12:06

The company I work for was close to folding just before Covid hit (around January time) but thanks to the furlough pay and the business grants, the government have actually saved us & we are better than ever. I carry out health & safety in the construction industry & as far as I can tell the construction industry is booming. People were submitting planning applications left, right & centre during lockdown & now everything appears to be going through.

It's definitely one of the stronger industries for those who are job hunting. And I wish everyone luck in finding new jobs...I know how difficult it is (I was one of the 2008 casualties).

When advising my dc about career choices I ask them to consider amongst other things what people couldn't do without. They came up with electric, gas, broadband, water services, teaching/schools/childcare, health, farming and food, transport. Now known as mostly as Key workers. Me, dp, his and my dc all work in one of those industries and none of us are in danger of losing our jobs. As above far from it.
So get up, go work, come home, eat, sleep, repeat? With no entertainment, no radio, no music, films, console games, internet, mobile, social interaction? No one would have kids if this was our existence. Doubt many would make it past 30!

I work for one of the companies concerned. It's not going to be much fun having this hang over us until we know. We still have a lot on furlough due to shielding, but some are really good workers so don't know how management will choose between them and us who can work through whatever the virus throws at us.

Chickencalledberyl · 10/07/2020 14:33

I work for one of the companies mentioned in the original link from OP

It's a painful wait as we go through process. As a single parent it's very anxious time.

Chickencalledberyl · 10/07/2020 14:35

I mean since I have one income only and only one earning potential.

It's equally worrying for everyone.

notimagain · 10/07/2020 14:39

There's a danger though of "fighting the last war" looking at that list..

TBH in twenty years being in "broadband" (define?) might be the road to unemployment if come the next epidemic people are communicating by other yet to be invented conduits, the internet has only been around in it's current form a couple of decades or so is getting into that now a road to a future proof job? Similarly farming - what price being in livestock farming if a foot and mouth plus epidemic roars out of the east, cereal farming heaven knows what disease might pop up.. Transport, logistics? Well given the advances in automation.......I could go on but I'll stop..

Careers advice? There aren't many jobs that are genuinely future proof. Just try and do something you enjoy.

transformandriseup · 10/07/2020 14:54

I'm looking for another job as sadly lost mine this year due to Covid. I can't find anything part time whatsoever, even 30 hours.

transformandriseup · 10/07/2020 14:55

I should have said in finance, there are part time jobs in other sectors.

EnlightenedOwl · 10/07/2020 15:18

Our region has advertised for vacancies in DWP as job / work coaches. Rather vague skill set only fixed term contracts but possibly of interest so thought I'd mention it

I just advise them to do something they truly love.

I wouldn’t be so smug. No job is safe.

Sayhi8 · 10/07/2020 16:19

The company my brother works for has just announced 1000 job cuts across the UK. It’s a really well known family business too. It’s such a shame. So many people affected by something that Was completely out of their control.

InvincibleInvisibility · 10/07/2020 17:41

DH works in food. Specifically distribution to restaurants, school and work canteens, hospitals, retirement homes, airports/planes and some frozen food retailers.

Before covid we thought it was a pretty safe sector. Everyone needs to eat right?

Turnover dropped 75% in April. We're abroad where lockdown lifted 6 weeks ago but they're still a decent % below normal. School canteens shut. Lots of office canteens shut or highly reduced. Hospitals ok. Restaurants- picking up but nowhere near normal. Airports and planes....I'll let you guess that one!

TazSyd · 10/07/2020 17:59

@InvincibleInvisibility

Sounds similar to my DP. He’s just been made redundant.

@EnlightenedOwl

Thanks for mentioning the roles at the DWP. My friend is an HR Manager who was made redundant in March and has really struggled to find a new role. I’ll let her know about those.

TazSyd · 10/07/2020 18:02

@Sayhi8

It’s shocking. Especially for those on a single income. Like you say, completely out of those affected control. As others have said, surely we could have come up with something better than trashing the economy to save the NHS.

psychomath · 10/07/2020 18:31

Teaching and healthcare are relatively safe I reckon, at least for the time being. Once the hit to income tax revenue really kicks in there may be cuts that eventually lead to redundancies, especially in non-core roles, but not so much in the immediate future.

Some industries have taken a massive hit for the time being but will probably recover quite a bit over the next couple of years as the virus situation gets under control. People still want to go on holiday even if it's not possible right now. Demand might not immediately get back up to the same level if people have less disposable income or are worried about job security, but we"re not looking at the death of the entire airline industry forever. I realise that doesn't help people's immediate situation though Sad

IMO not really about protecting the NHS but rather protecting the government from the political backlash if the pics from the NHS we're like those from Italy. They don't give a stuff about the NHS!
