Face masks for shopping

Lemons1571 · 27/06/2020 22:18

It’s just popped up on my social media on the official bona fide UK government page.

“Going shopping this weekend?
Shop responsibly
Wear a face mask“

This is the drip feed start of a move towards compulsory face masks in shops isn’t it. Particularly in the autumn/winter when they expect transmission to rise.

I’m keen. I imagine lots will struggle with this though.

@blanche85 Whats wrong with just not going anywhere where they are required?

vanillandhoney · 28/06/2020 18:13

@AudacityOfHope

I really want to see them made mandatory.

The amount of whining on here that I read from people who don't see why they should wear one is astounding.

What about people with disabilities and sensory disorders that mean they physically cannot wear a mask?

Do you think they should have to explain their medical history to bus drivers, shop assistants and random members of the public who take it upon themselves to "call them out" for being selfish and "whiny" as you so kindly put it?

The royal family don't enter my head from one week to the next @HeIenaDove but they can fuck off for a whole host of reasons really.

AudacityOfHope · 28/06/2020 18:18

Those people are exempt @vanillahoney so I'm obviously talking about those who just don't fancy it.

thenightsky · 28/06/2020 18:22

I've made my own. There's loads of patterns and videos on line. The first one was a bit fiddly and took an hour, but I've got it down to 30 mins now.

vanillandhoney · 28/06/2020 18:24

My point is, you can't tell whether someone is genuinely exempt just by looking at them. People with autism and other disorders have been videoed and had their images blasted on social media because people just think they're being selfish by not wearing masks.
HeIenaDove · 28/06/2020 18:32

One bloke with crutches was filmed on a bus by a healthcare professional She then uploaded it on to Twitter. When it was pointed out to her that it was discriminatory she deleted it.

Best practice in theory - but how does a single parent with a baby and no family or friend support buy milk? How does a non-driver take her baby to the hospital when he is sick? Both situations I have found myself in.

HeIenaDove · 28/06/2020 18:51

Fair points . Im childfree by choice! But for someone like @vanillandhoney it would be impossible because of the peer policing!

People with certain conditions are exempt but has already been proven it doesnt stop them being shamed and bullied

And here is my next prediction .........im betting it wont be long before it gets physical.

Diamond Buses have agreed to change the message on its website and also agreed to hand out exemption cards to anyone who needs one,

EnlightenedOwl · 28/06/2020 18:59

Update from my hairdresser that clients to wear face masks. I have of course cancelled the appointment.

plaidpyjamas · 28/06/2020 19:47

@mintjulia I feel exactly the sam,e, masks make me feel breathless and panicky. On public transport of course i would have to wear a mask however i believe generally in shops or on the street you can just keep your distance and masks are not necessary. In my very busy area there is very little mask wearing but people are cautious with distancing. If compulsory mask wearing is brought in for shopping i will shop as little as i can.

You should be shopping as little as you can anyway - the mask shouldn't be a deterrent.

This whole 'breathless and panicky' thing seems to be rife here - it is what it is. There are far worse things in life than having to wear a mask while you do your weekly shop. There are far,far worse off people than you - people dying or seriously ill from covid and people are complaining of a mask making them feel a bit claustrophobic. Get some perspective!

Carlislemumof4 · 28/06/2020 20:10

I'm also wondering if the government are moving towards mandatory face coverings for shops, I would very much support that.

I've been wearing a 2 layer cotton mask for supermarket shopping for the last month. Despite not usually being keen on covering my face at all I've found them really comfortable, even in the recent hot weather. Have bought a few each for myself, DH and the DCs to wear for shops, public transport, cinema, museum, hairdresser (for me, I cut DCs hair and DH shaves his own!), vet surgery etc. for the foreseeable future. Though the DCs aren't to wear face coverings for school, I'll wear one for the school run in September if they're all back and social distancing at the school gate is abandoned.

A majority wearing basic face coverings could really make a difference.

Tootsey11 · 28/06/2020 20:33

@0nedayinthefuture you sound lovely

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 28/06/2020 21:03

Do you have a link?
Not seen anything like this where I am.
Still more people not wearing a mask than is. (UK)
I don't wear a mask to the supermarket and don't intend to (unless it becomes that you have to)

plaidpyjamas · 28/06/2020 21:05

@blanche85 of course there are worse things, like becoming seriously ill with the virus, I am not stupid. But maintaining very cautious social distance should be an acceptable alternative for people who cannot bear to.wear masks. I will do this, and avoid anywhere where social distancing isn't possible. You can argue that 'breathless and panicky'is flaky bollocks if you like, but there will be plenty of medical situations caused by people having panic attacks and fainting whilst wearing masks, i can assure you. I was in SE Asia during SARS and in high humidity the wearing of face masks was truly unbearable. Also its clearly not the case that we should now be shopping as little as possible, that's why.non-essential retail has reopened. I have followed every lockdown rule to the letter. I don't want to wear a mask. I won't go into any situation where.i could pose a risk to someone else by not wearing it. So where's the problem?

But some situations are unexpected, and unavoidable. If face masks become mandatory in all shops - you will have to bite the bullet and wear one. You won't have to wear them out and about generally- e.g walking down the street or sat in a park - places where you can safely distance anyway - we're talking whilst you're in a shop, where with every good intention in the world- it's impossible to safely distance from people - it's a crowded, confined space. Covids wet dream.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 28/06/2020 22:09

That's not true anymore - you can go to the shops as often as you like.

golightlytoday · 28/06/2020 22:33

Highly recommend these masks.

stempunkwear.com/product-category/masks/

Have children sizes. And pocket for filter, washable and a metal bit for nose so no steaming up glasses.

Ordered a child and adult and came in a week

Profits to nhs charities.

HeIenaDove · 28/06/2020 23:04

FGS Since when was shopping in ALL shops mandatory. Because unless it is the this comment is irrelevant.

And if this is made mandatory while ppl pissing and shitting on beaches is minimized (John Edmunds did this on CH 4 news on Friday) and the Cummings issue is still unresolved there could be an angry response from the public.

And @blanche85 i dont know whether you have noticed but lockdown has taught a lot of people that they can live without a lot of things.

I really dont think the opening of the non essential shops is going to be the economic boost the Government think it is. And thats without face masks.

Be careful what you wish for!

Costacoffeeplease · 28/06/2020 23:17

I live in Portugal. Masks have been compulsory for a while now, in shops, restaurants and enclosed public spaces. I had an ecg and heart ultrasound recently wearing mine. I’m amazed that they’re not mandatory in the U.K., and at the general resistance to wearing them, disabilities permitting
