Face masks for shopping

Lemons1571 · 27/06/2020 22:18

It’s just popped up on my social media on the official bona fide UK government page.

“Going shopping this weekend?
Shop responsibly
Wear a face mask“

This is the drip feed start of a move towards compulsory face masks in shops isn’t it. Particularly in the autumn/winter when they expect transmission to rise.

I’m keen. I imagine lots will struggle with this though.

I want some sort of normal life and if it involves wearing a mask in public then I will crack on

For me, everyone wearing masks will be the public statement that nothing at all is normal. That we are required to view ourselves and all others as biohazards. So that will be normal when we accept that everyone else is plague-ridden. Maybe after a year or 2 I'll get used to it. I guess we'll see.

BarefootHippieChick · 28/06/2020 15:11

This is basically the HIV/condom campaign of the 2020s

This made me laugh. But very true. When we've all panic bought the masks up, maybe condoms will be the next option 😂

HeIenaDove · 28/06/2020 16:53

If you don’t like masks you’re really not going to like an incubator yet your putting the weakest in our society at risk of exactly that

a. You are in an induced coma when put on a ventilator so you dont actually know about it. If you wernt sedated your body would fight against it.

b. i didnt see reams and reams of threads like this when the weakest in our society were losing their DLA. There were threads but nowhere near this amount!!

I suspect there is a direct correlation between those shaming people for not wearing masks and demanding to know the ins and outs of their medical conditions and those who thought/think most of those on DLA/PIP are scroungers.

So lets not pretend its about protecting the vulnerable shall we. Lets stop being disingenuous.

Its about getting out there and spending. Its about being able to go to the pub. Its about being able to go on holiday and EVERYONE wearing masks speeds that up.

The economy has taken a huge it

But dont pretend its about the vulnerable when they have already been bullied, harassed and filmed on public transport for not being able to wear masks.

And some companies are acting in a similar way One bus company deleted a social media post saying that from Monday 29th June passengers would have to PROVE their disability/medical condition if not wearing a mask. After they were told they were in breach of the Equality Act.

Prove you are disabled so you can get PIP
Prove you are disabled so you can get food delivered.
Prove you are disabled so you wont have your condition exacerbated by wearing a mask.

A sickening hat trick!

All about the vulnerable? Yeah Course it is!!

MollyButton · 28/06/2020 16:58

Its also likely i would now have to wait weeks for a GP appointment to get the antibiotics and fucidin cream which you can only get on prescription.

for one this is unlikely to be true. My GP you can now communicate by electronic message, as they are triarging most cases by phone first, you get seen quicker. And with recurrent Impetigo they would probably prescribe after a phone call or at most ask you to send a photo in.
I had a flair up of an eye condition, sent a message to my GP, was phoned within a hour, and had a hospital appointment that day (the drugs I can only get from the hospital). Apart from having to ask my daughter for a lift because I don't want to use buses right now - it was easier than normal.

I am wearing a face mask when I got to the shops other than Click and collect. But I do that as little as possible.
I did have to remove mine at the hospital as it made my glasses fog up, so I couldn't do the eye test with it on. But it was only off briefly.

I don't care if other people have had the virus, I will do what I can to prevent myself and my family getting it, an us pasing it on to others.

GalesThisMorning · 28/06/2020 17:07

My prediction... it will become compulsory, either by being mandated or through social pressure. The vast majority of us who can wear one safely, will. We will get used to it and manage it, same as people all around the world. There will not be a spike in cases of asbestositis Grin

HeIenaDove · 28/06/2020 17:13

Molly im with Virgin Care!

And i dont want to risk getting back in that cycle again. Luckily my hairdresser is understanding and has got enough clients willing to go to appointments so we have both agreed its better for me to wait.

Why on EARTH should i put myself at risk of a horrible contagious skin condition that i had on and off for a long time and risk putting myself back in that cycle. Im also sick of hearing the words "personal responsibility" bandied about when they didnt seem to apply to those going on ski trips and cruises. When i said this on another thread the answer i got was "well it was legal at the time" Well so is not wearing a mask in a shop now.
So why are people making excuses for the former and not the latter.

MagisCapulus · 28/06/2020 17:16

Superdrug sell them so they are quite easy to find. We are wearing them when shopping.

vanillandhoney · 28/06/2020 17:21

The problem with making them mandatory everywhere is that it's just going to isolate the vulnerable even further. They already can't travel on public transport without being filmed, mocked and photographed - what's going to happen when this "rule" extends to shops and other indoor areas?

It's going to make people scared to go out in public. People with autism find changes incredibly stressful - soon they won't be able to travel on buses, go to work or go to the shops without having to explain their autism to complete strangers.

I'm autistic and I don't want to have to explain that to every random person I meet. I'm very fortunate that I drive, can get shopping delivered, have a husband and family who can help me, and have a job that means I don't need to wear a mask (unless they make them mandatory out of doors). But lots of people aren't so fortunate and their lives are going to be made even more difficult by blanket laws like that.

HeIenaDove · 28/06/2020 17:31

I'm autistic and I don't want to have to explain that to every random person I meet

And you shouldnt bloody well have to.

DesmondTheMoonbear · 28/06/2020 17:32

HelenaDove Which bus company was that?

HeIenaDove · 28/06/2020 17:33

They already can't travel on public transport without being filmed, mocked and photographed

Which i predicted would happen.

blanche85 · 28/06/2020 17:34

I live in Germany and it is mandatory to wear masks in shops and on public transport.

I see so many posts complaining that masks make people feel claustrophobic and panic etc - I can sympathise, but masks are effective - I think it decreases the chance of transmission five-fold.

It's not pleasant but it's a means to an end - it's proven to help and if everyone sucks it up and does it,it will be for the greater good and we will see an improvement.

Cornettoninja · 28/06/2020 17:34

You are in an induced coma when put on a ventilator so you dont actually know about it. If you wernt sedated your body would fight against it

You’ll definitely know about it afterwards!

I suspect there is a direct correlation between those shaming people for not wearing masks and demanding to know the ins and outs of their medical conditions and those who thought/think most of those on DLA/PIP are scroungers

WTAF? First off where did that connection come from to make such a massive utterly unfounded and actually quite offensive leap?

Secondly I don’t have to justify my position by describing the ongoing hell this government have put my family through with DLA but it’s pretty obvious to us that it’s cutting off our noses to spite our faces not to want to engage with prevention of covid just because we’ve already been fucked over for being in an unavoidably weak and vulnerable position.

It is now compulsory to wear a Face Covering when travelling on bus services unless you are exempt from doing so.

From Monday 29th June Passengers will no longer be allowed to travel without a Face Covering unless they are able to prove they are exempt.

vanillandhoney · 28/06/2020 17:43

Not everyone CAN suck it up. There's a difference between an NT person who just finds them hot/uncomfortable and someone with autism (or another sensory disorder) who actually cannot tolerate a mask or face covering without having meltdown or panic attack.

People with disabilities or autism disorders aren't selfish people who refuse to "suck it up". Hmm

DesmondTheMoonbear · 28/06/2020 17:46

HelenaDove Thank you. That's despicable.

HeIenaDove · 28/06/2020 17:48

@Cornettoninja The thing is though the same condition can affect different people in different ways. So some may be able to wear face masks and some wont.

*Secondly i dont have to justify my position"

Neither should the people with medical conditions who cant wear masks who have to travel on buses but that hasnt stopped others trying to make them justify themselves.

I was not having a go at you personally.

But there has been a sight more threads about concern for the vulnerable re face masks (and more of them in a shorter space of time) than there was about DLA and that speaks for itself on its own!

Its people in that position who have been shamed bullied and filmed.

I really want to see them made mandatory.

The amount of whining on here that I read from people who don't see why they should wear one is astounding.

MrsR87 · 28/06/2020 18:05

I hope they don't become compulsory in schools. I had my first experience of wearing one to my 20 week scan last week and it made me hot and uncomfortable. When I was in work the day before in an un-air conditioned computer room for a two hour teaching session, I almost collapsed twice and struggled to get my shoes off as my feet had swollen so much! I was so uncomfortable😞. I was not wearing a mask but if I had been I'm pretty sure I'd have been on the floor 🥺

blanche85 · 28/06/2020 18:09

The whole 'hot and uncomfortable' argument is just selfish though - they're to be worn for a reason,a very good one - to keep yourself and others safer. Of course they don't feel particularly good - but unless everyone is on board and stops complaining and making excuses of 'claustrophobia ' then nothing will change.

HeIenaDove · 28/06/2020 18:10

Are you including the Royal Family in that @AudacityOfHope

GoldenOmber · 28/06/2020 18:10

I got some nice handmade ones off Etsy. I don't like wearing masks at all but I'll happily put up with it if it means more indoor shops and so on can reopen while the transmission rates stay really low.
