Times saying secondary schools might not open

www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/coronavirus-secondary-schools-might-not-be-able-to-fully-reopen-in-september-hrfmxlg5j

Schools will not be able to fully reopen in September unless people behave themselves over the summer, scientific advisers have warned ministers.

Even a modest increase in people’s leisure contacts would mean a choice between shutting pubs or keeping secondary schools closed, modelling for the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) suggests.

We don't have school buses - the pupils just share the public buses here into the city (which get very busy) so not sure how that would work. Most double deckers.

Just to point out it's really hard to compare schools in the U.K. with schools on the continent and also to compare within this pandemic.

They way they're dealing with Covid is different in some countries (eg much more face mask use). Class sizes and school days are very different (ours are much, much bigger in comparison.)

Across France there's localised responses so some schools are operating differently for example.

So it's not really worth trying to compare.

When this gov update is given this week maybe one of us can share it here and we can have a look

Also, guidance for sept isn't out yet so we simply don't know.

Sadly, as someone also who loves and values subjects like art and drama and music, they will be hard to teach in primary under current guidance. I can see issues with secondary too.

Orangeblossom78 · 28/06/2020 11:54

Yes my DS is doing DT Product design and music for GCSE and we are finding those difficult. Geography and English not so difficult.

Inspiration (sp) chain in East Anglia (six schools) sorry cann'remember all the details but read today that they are opening fully in September and there will be no social distancing as that is not possible in schools.
So at last some sense.
Will look for link.

Orangeblossom78 · 28/06/2020 11:55

Secondary or primary?

It's almost as if the person steering the ship feels that children should be disregarded?
Should we be surprised🤔 apparently this is how Boris treats many of his own children😯☝️

And they are going back on August 18th!
Lucky kids in East Anglia

Chosennone · 28/06/2020 12:01

Umbrellahat that is the issue I'm wondering about. If they completely abandon social distancing, would they abandon test and trace? Secondary school communities are 1000+ so if they operate as normal are we saying one positive case shuts the whole school down?

Public transport will have to abandon social distancing to accomodate travelling secondary kids too?

NoHardSell · 28/06/2020 12:04

@gumbucket

I keep looking at the part where it says there would be a choice between schools and certain sectors of the economy. The children have taken a backseat enough as a result of restarting the economy, I don't think they will be able to take much more backseating.
Oh yes... Pubs or schools ... Pubs or schools ... Which one shall we close? Such a hard choice

Ffs this country is like a barely functioning alcoholic

Chosennone · 28/06/2020 12:05

Govt fund overtime for teachers working Saturdays?? I can NOT see that happening in a month of Sundays.

UltimateWednesday · 28/06/2020 12:08

Schools have been given £1bn for the catch up programme. Some of it will be spent on teacher overtime, although probably at tutoring, not teaching rates, if they're only doing tutoring. Some teachers will be very keen to do it, others won't, but there'll be enough who are more than willing.

EducatingArti · 28/06/2020 12:11

That is about building new school buildings though, which unless they actually increase the number of teaching rooms on current school sites, will not really help at all.

HipTightOnions · 28/06/2020 12:12

although probably at tutoring, not teaching rates, if they're only doing tutoring

Just FYI tutoring often pays much more per hour than teaching!

UltimateWednesday · 28/06/2020 12:12

Not at LA rates for senior teachers it doesn't

HipTightOnions · 28/06/2020 12:16

Depends what you’re tutoring. I’m close to the top of the scale and tutoring pays much better as an hourly rate - and that’s not even including the non-contact hours!

QueenBlueberries · 28/06/2020 12:17

I wouldn't be that bothered about all that stuff if secondary schools provided, across the board, good online teaching. At the moment, it's so hit and miss. Many secondary schools are absolutely crap with online teaching, others are very good, and it worried me a lot that so many kids will be left behind. The government needs to have much more strict guidelines, and support, for provision of online learning. But I'm afraid that education is not a priority for them. THey clearly don't give a shit about our kids.

crosseyedMary · 28/06/2020 12:17

Pubs or schools
I know☹️ but wait it's even worse than that .....what they seem to be saying is 'if you can't behave yourselves in the pubs we will punish the children by not letting them have an education'
Wtf☹️

crosseyedMary · 28/06/2020 12:19

Building new schools
Oh, will they be nightingale schools?
empty white elephants with no teachers to staff them🙄

HipTightOnions · 28/06/2020 12:20

what they seem to be saying is 'if you can't behave yourselves in the pubs we will punish the children

Of course they’re not! They’re saying ‘if you can’t behave yourselves in the pubs it won’t be safe...’

NeurotrashWarrior · 28/06/2020 12:22

The issues with the tutoring, interventions an extra input using extra staff are the bubbling etc.

If staff are not to move between groups, the ability to provide that input is reduced.

SmileEachDay · 28/06/2020 12:24

UmbrellaHat

That article is entirely full of “shoulds” and “coulds”. Plus, it’s the Daily Mail...

I’d be extremely surprised if it went ahead.
