How do you feel about this figure?

For me it makes a lot of my fears and concerns be about the virus feel redundant (I'm quite chill but also cautious).

It also makes me feel like some people's reactions are now OTT.

Surely this is now a similar figure to people to have a cold? Or chicken pox? Or cold sores? (I have no idea but just an observation)

It kind of makes the fact it's still illegal to go in someone else's house a bit mind boggling as well.

Yes it does seem ridiculous. I am all for lockdown being eased quickly, however it isnt a bad idea to be a bit cautious as if we just go back to how things were before lockdown, then the numbers could go up again.
I think we should be allowed in other peoples houses and schools, but large gatherings and so-called "superspreader" events e.g. sports matches, churches, music and comedy gigs would be best avoided.

SpillTheTeaa · 22/06/2020 18:08

That's actually reassured me a bit but will still be very cautious.

Deelish75 · 22/06/2020 18:10

It’s still a very nasty virus for some people and I do think we need to be cautious going into autumn-winter but it is good news to see the infection rate going down - hope it continues.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 22/06/2020 18:13

Lots of viruses are nasty for some people, could you imagine if we reacted like this to everyone one of them?

LockdownLou · 22/06/2020 18:18

I feel the same as you. More relaxed, sensibly cautious.

I can’t truly get on with things properly though until this winter is over. We will know then if the virus is endemic, and if we face future disruption etc.

Just praying by September the kids can all return to school, and track and trace is effective, and we can just put this year behind us.

Thisdressneedspockets · 22/06/2020 19:00

This was in the ons report for 7th June. Why is it only now being made more public?

Scottishgirl85 · 22/06/2020 19:06

It's been at that level for a few weeks, not sure why people are only just realising this Confused but it is at that level because of the restrictions in place.

CodenameVillanelle · 22/06/2020 19:12

It's more like 75 in 100 have cold sores but yeah
However if you get one person with Covid in an enclosed space like a factory they seem able to infect about 50 people in short order so I don't know

RhianFuckingMorris · 22/06/2020 19:14

It's only going to increase as we get more relaxed and busier going out.
That's why eveeythingbis beingvludted slowly.
I think this autumn and winter will be the test. When we are even more relaxed, even more fatigued of social distancing measures at a time when more of us will be in enclosed indoor spaces with no windows open and the central heating on.

Korea is reporting a second wave and Germany has seen a sudden jump.

I.dont mean to be a party pooper but this is far from over and no it's not safe.

People need to be kinder. Respect people need to deal with this in their own way. Some need normality to cope but those wanting that should respect the fears of those that don't want to be closer than 2meters.

I think there is nasty shit going on from both sides. The carefree need to stop ridiculing the nervous and the nervous need to stop judging the carefree. Mutual respect and kindness for others thoughts and feelings are crucial going ahead.

PenelopePitstop49 · 22/06/2020 19:18

Yet we've put a country into lockdown and set ourselves up with billions of £s worth of debt that our kids will still be paying off in thirty years time. And millions more will die due to lack of essential medical care while Drs and Nurses stand in empty clinics and film dances for TikTok.

And worst of all, it's validated the neurotic behaviour of the seeming millions with health anxiety.

picklemewalnuts · 22/06/2020 19:25

It seems that way until you remember that last year there were 3,571 customers in a Morrison's supermarket each day, on average. Bearing in mind some days are slow, others are heaving. On a busy day that means maybe 3 people with CV moving through the store.

That's not so bad, but what about a full bus or tube? I'd say if you go on a full bus everyday, odds are that you'll share it with someone with CV every 10 days.

Lumene · 22/06/2020 19:27

It’s a similar amount to early in the epidemic.

What worries me isn’t the current numbers. It’s the potential for exponential growth if too much of lockdown is released too early.

DianaT1969 · 22/06/2020 19:35

It's very positive and a welcome outcome from lockdown. Enjoy it while it lasts OP. The news from Germany and the virus outbreaks in cold factories suggest it will spread fast again in winter.

it's nearer two, than three per day

I'm happy to take my chances with that - especially as that's where we do the family shopping

ifonly4 · 22/06/2020 19:45

I work in retail. Had a couple come in yesterday, mid 30s, asking for a thermometer. He looked hot and face sticky, her face had perspiration, droplets in her forehead and running down her face. Obviously I don't know for sure if they had Covid, but it's people like this we have to watch out for who will still go out with symptoms.

SophieB100 · 22/06/2020 19:48

I found it reassuring.
But then I feel unsure, because of Germany, and they were where we are now a month ago.
I'd hate for us all to relax too much, and suddenly have to lock down again in the Autumn or even earlier.
I really don't know what to think to be honest. I think we need to stay careful, but go out and do what we can safely over the summer, because I think from what Jenny Harries said the Autumn/Winter could see things change again.

I hate this - the uncertainty.

Jellykat · 22/06/2020 19:49

Not if you work in the chicken factory in Anglesey it isnt..

158 positive cases so far out of 560 staff.. just goes to show how quickly it can still spread, localised i know, but hardly justifying your flippant 'OTT' comment OP.

AgeLikeWine · 22/06/2020 19:50

That’s between 20 & 30 infected people in a sold-out football stadium, or a handful in a theatre or concert hall or one on a packed tube train or nightclub.

If all these activities were allowed to go ahead without social distancing, the R number would very quickly start to grow and the virus would spread exponentially.

SophieB100 · 22/06/2020 20:07

You are right @AgeLikeWine

The cases increase rapidly. I'm not sure about the reduced social distancing that they say will be announced tomorrow.

Flamingolingo · 22/06/2020 20:12

Means there are 150 active cases in my home town. So 150 cases within a 3-5 mile radius of me

Fredocorleone · 22/06/2020 20:13

I’m confused. The 1 in 1700 was from the ONS about two weeks ago, is there any later stats or has it remained the same ever since? Because I thought the ONS were about a week/ten days behind anyway so presumable in ‘real-time’ the stat should be different now?

Lemmylemming · 22/06/2020 20:16

Remember not everyone infected is out there infecting other people. So it’s not 1 in 1700 people you come across in supermarkets etc as a good proportion of them are either in hospital, at hone in bed feeling crap or self isolating because their family member they caught it from is sick or they got told to isolate by track and trace.

This is what I came to say Smile
APeakyBlinder · 22/06/2020 20:20

We're 1 in 10,000 in Wales apparently (according to the FM anyway!)

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 22/06/2020 20:20

Please remember that the UK figure is based on the stats of 4 different countries whose governments are all doing different levels of lockdown. You need to look at the rate of infection for your own country.

My country (Scotland) and my county have almost no new cases these days. I feel very safe going into shops now and we still don't have date for more shops or pubs opening so our numbers aren't going to increase meantime.

If you're in England, you're supposed to catch it for 'herd' immunity purposes. Good luck to you.
