Not sure how I feel about having this download on my phone without my permission. How about you?

It's on my iPhone too but switched off, it updated itself last night.

GlacindaTheTroll · 20/06/2020 07:53

Anyone who has this app care to explain what actually happens?

Which app? This software update is not an app, so I was wondering if you're thinking of one of the ones in use in a different country, that a MNetter overseas might be using?

The IoW app, AFAIK, was bespoke and did not need this phone software functionality .

indeed, i am askign to hear from a MN overseas
BatShite · 20/06/2020 07:55

I know its not the app, will be used with the app though as far as I am aware. But..am not that techie tbh..could this update or whatever have been whats caused my phone to go fucking crappy and slow the past few days? Seems random, though phone is old ad not exactly a 'in demand' one so maybe its just on its last legs or something, just bad timing.

MaudesMum · 20/06/2020 07:55

Nope, not on mine at all.

BatShite · 20/06/2020 07:58

Where I live we are told there is no Covid-19.

Antarctica?

Queenest · 20/06/2020 07:58

It’s just a software update. Gin

SunshineCake · 20/06/2020 07:59

Can someone show the picture of the app please? I have something but don't know if it is what I have downloaded. Thank you.

Redkatagain · 20/06/2020 08:01

Yes on mine and also on DPs. How DARE they! It's utterly outrageous

TryingToBeBold · 20/06/2020 08:03

You do know Apple were fined heavily for deliberately slowing down phones and battery life to make you buy newer models?

If they can do that then an app or update or software is easy...

BertieBotts · 20/06/2020 08:05

@MonkeyToesOfDoom

I'm surprised they put it in the open instead of just on the hidden developer menu screens tbh.
Why would "they"? It's not a secret. It's not a conspiracy!

It's literally just a bit of code that actually gives you control over the thing you're worried about getting without your consent Confused You've got the off switch before you even have a reason to need it. It's a safeguard that works as an opt in.

Also, it doesn't use location services, it uses bluetooth, so feel free to turn location services off, but it won't make any difference.

GlacindaTheTroll · 20/06/2020 08:05

Can someone show the picture of the app please?

Which app? This software update isn't an app. Some MNetters overseas might be using Covid exposure apps and might be able to tell you about them.

acatcalledjohn · 20/06/2020 08:06

It's outrageous that they offer further functionality to your phone which can choose to use or turn off, like a lot of other things in the menu (location services etc)?

  1. It is only a functionality to help a potential future app work
  2. It does FUCK ALL without the app

Smart phones take all the smart from people it seems.

Reedshoes · 20/06/2020 08:06

Added to my iPhone too. Exposure logging but no app

Mine is the same as @Lemons1571

ItsSummer · 20/06/2020 08:08

I trust google more than I trust the government 🤷‍♀️

GlacindaTheTroll · 20/06/2020 08:09

And SunshineCake if you have an app that you no longer want, just delete it. I've just had a look in the App Store and there are oodles available there, so I doubt we can guess which one you have accidentally downloaded

Redkatagain - you probably have auto update installed, which means you have given permission for all updates always. If you want to read and check the T&Cs for each one in future, so you can reject ones containing content you do not want, then you need to switch that off (sorry, don't known how as I never turned it on)

RightIsRight · 20/06/2020 08:09

@Redkatagain

Yes on mine and also on DPs. How DARE they! It's utterly outrageous
Yes! It’s a fucking scandal! How dare they do a software update....
megletthesecond · 20/06/2020 08:11

It's sitting under my Google account settings. I'd never looked at it before today.
I don't turn on Bluetooth or location so maybe it won't work.

Does this explain why my phone has been yelling at me recently saying it's running out of storage space. Every day I'm sitting there having to delete stuff.

DancingWithTheDevil · 20/06/2020 08:13

Nothing on mine. I'm just installing a software update now, so I'll let you know if that changes.

okiedokieme · 20/06/2020 08:14

It's in settings, privacy, health on the iPhone but only works with a companion app which isn't available in the U.K. yet

Passanotherjaffacake · 20/06/2020 08:14

It’s on mine too, bit shocked really.

GlacindaTheTroll · 20/06/2020 08:15

megletthesecond - very unlikely - it's just one small part of the operating system

The main reasons for phones running out of space is too many photos plus large apps that you don't use much. Especially if you leave them running in the background by mistake. So deleting apps you barely use (you can always get them back) and finding other storage for at least some of your pix might be a good place to start.

Mawbags · 20/06/2020 08:16

Yes it’s just the API

This would have been the only way you could get this to work. Nobody would have bothered downloading it.

I’d rather know if I cross paths with a Covid patient, Wouldn’t you?

BashStreetKid · 20/06/2020 08:16

@Passanotherjaffacake

It’s on mine too, bit shocked really.
Why? It's harmless.
BashStreetKid · 20/06/2020 08:17

@Redkatagain

Yes on mine and also on DPs. How DARE they! It's utterly outrageous
They dare because you consented to the update. So not much daring involved, really.

And it's not in the least outrageous.
