Doctor says DS (7) probably had CV in December

Just that really, fascinating if we could find out. DS, 7, had a cough like I’ve never seen before at Christmas in Spain. I’ve been to hospital about 15 times with both of my children, more often the younger one, when they’ve had croup or a viral wheeze so I’m very used to what these sound like. The cough ds has at Christmas saw him coughing for weeks and weeks but at the peak had him non stop for 5 whole hours without any break. By 2am that morning when nothing was stopping him coughing I went to the chemist to get some steroids as I know this is what we are often given in hospital for croup but I knew there was no croup or viral wheeze, just this constant dry cough. As it was by the time I got back from the chemist he had finally stopped coughing enough to sleep and they next day at the clinic they gave him inhalers which he needed for a good few weeks afterwards.

Anyway I had a call today from his younger sibling’s asthma doctor and although I was pleased to report the 5yo has not had to use an inhaler for months and months I said it was funny as DS had had to have one. She asked for details about this and said it sounded like he had had Covid back in December, especially given we were in spain.

Who knows! Would BA interesting to get him an antibody test but as far as I’m aware they are expensive and not always accurate.

That IS interesting @Freetodowhatiwant!

Bol87 · 15/06/2020 23:04

Interesting even doctors think it’s been kicking around that long! I thought it was largely conspiracy theorists..

I have a lady who works near me who flew back from Australia via Singapore early January. Was very ill on and off for a couple of months, hospitalised a couple of times and was completely wiped out by it. We kept saying in March that we thought she had had it.

She has recently spoken to her doctor who says that during the time she was ill be had other patients with this mysterious bug. He checked her blood tests which all say they had no idea what it was.

I'm sure she picked it up from Singapore or the flight back. Would be interesting if she could have an antibody test to see if she had been infected by it.

Northernsoullover · 15/06/2020 23:15

My GP also hinted at it being around for quite some time. Her words were that 'they haven't been honest with us'

PutOnAHappyFace · 15/06/2020 23:24

I think it's a tricky one. My DD had confirmed (with swabs) flu, she was really unwell with a lot of covid symptoms which included the cough and she was quite wheezy.

Not saying covid wasn't around in December but there was definitely more flu around this winter which could of been confused with covid.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 15/06/2020 23:29

Or whooping cough? I guess youd have a heard a whoop though....

Keepdistance · 16/06/2020 00:10

I find olbas oil sooths the coughing.
We also had dc with a fever and then cough in dec. I then had fever and chills and cough and conjunctivitis lasting into jan.

NoLongerAnEasyTarget · 16/06/2020 00:15

My Dr said they thought people had it earlier in the year too. Certainly wasn't surprised that I rocked up with it at the start of March.

ChristmasCarcass · 16/06/2020 00:16

I had it in January, in the UK. Lasted a good month, and DH caught it after me, cough and fever with CXR changes, identical relapsing remitting course over four weeks, no improvement on antibiotics.

Both of us have had now antibody tests (NHS screening programme), and we are positive. Neither of us have had any other illnesses since then, so almost certain it was Covid. I became ill on 16th January, and had not been anywhere except home and work for six months beforehand.

confuddeledconfuddel · 16/06/2020 00:19

My whole house (except 1 kid) also had this really bad cough for about 3 weeks. Took 3 antibiotics to get rid. Dh had x rays the lot. Worst cough I have ever had in my life. Convinced I had covid19. Antibody test was negative. There are other bad Coronavirus bugs doing the rounds as well. If you think about the number of people tested for coronavirus vs number positive. Most of those tested had covid 19 symptoms as well which was obviously something else.
Get an antibody test. I would love to know when it first arrived, it is interesting

Chochito · 16/06/2020 00:21

I am in Spain too, OP, and had it in early January. Had travelled to France twice and England once in December, including air travel.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 16/06/2020 00:23

I'm really not one for conspiracies, but I'm convinced I had it end of last year, around October time.
I was the same, cough was like nothing you'd ever heard (really high and barking) and literally constant.
Had trouble breathing, found it hard to walk even as far as the next room for a few months.
Had to lie down for ages afterwards and even after an hour hadn't got breath back. Confused
Several courses of increasing in dose antibiotics didn't touch, then steroids didn't either.
Ended up going for a chest xray and heart scan.
Doctors baffled as all seemed OK.
Just as I start to feel a semblance of normal in March time (still bit breathless) everywhere starts shutting down with my exact symptoms.
I'd love to know if I've had it.
I honestly thought at one point there was something seriously wrong with me but there can't have been as touch wood I'm fine now Confused

Just dig up this old thread from February:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/3822273-Has-anyone-got-this-sinus-throat-bug-thing?pg=3

Now some people on there probably just had sinusitis, but at least a few sound like covid with hindsight.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 16/06/2020 00:25

I'm one who's never usually ill, either.
Very rare I even get a cold.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 16/06/2020 00:31

A lot sounds like just a bad cold, but the one who said they coughed until they were sick - that sounds just like I was.
Except I managed to give myself a huge bruise on my stomach from my coughing fits, scared the crap out of me

liverandbacon · 16/06/2020 00:34

They've identified cases in France from November so it's entirely possible it was here sooner than we have been told and I'm not a fan of the conspiracies either.

I know someone who had all the symptoms in early January including covid toes and 2 weeks after he had the same symptoms as the children with the Kawasaki like illness including a further lengthy hospital stay. The drs had no idea what was wrong. His family also had the cough and temp etc and one of their kids had the covid rash. Probably never know though but it would be interesting to find out.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 16/06/2020 00:42

I SO want the antibody test.

LetGoOfTheLittleDistractions · 16/06/2020 01:27

I've heard they have retested swabs from people dying of flu in November in the UK that have tested positive for Covid. Not a friend of a friend of a friend but someone who was involved.

Aridane · 16/06/2020 03:17

I'm really not one for conspiracies, but I'm convinced I had it end of last year, around October time.

That is a bit tin hat territory

Paranoidmarvin · 16/06/2020 05:56

Over Xmas. My son was in bed ill for nearly two weeks. He had an awful cough which then he was struggling to breathe. A high temperature and was very ill. If he had this now I would say he had the coronavirus.

Bells3032 · 16/06/2020 06:00

I had something very similar in late dec. Horrific cough to the point I wet myself when coughing and I've had pneumonia before and it wasn't as bad as that. I work in a high tourist area and was concinced. Antibody tests have come back negative though

waltzingbetty · 16/06/2020 06:15

It's not really conspiracy theory to think that a highly infectious virus confirmed in China in October/November was circulating through Europe at a similar time - think of the thousands of air passengers between China and Europe. It's common sense rather than conspiracy. It's ludicrous to think it would take 3 months to reach Europe

ChasingRainbows19 · 16/06/2020 06:21

I work on a children's ward . We had a crazy flu/Bronc season.

Mostly confirmed by swabs. I'm sure covid was probably here by Christmas and before China said but lots of winter viruses can be similar to Covid symptoms too. My quibble with it is why did we not see the excess deaths the months before like we have with confirmed covid being around ( ONS state around 60,000 excess deaths during the outbreak/last few months. Even if the cause was given to something else there would still be more deaths?)

Heatherjayne1972 · 16/06/2020 06:31

Last winter was awful for illness. So many people had ‘something’
No one will ever know unless we all get an antibody test
But it would be interesting to find out

hennythe100footbird · 16/06/2020 06:34

My LO was in hospital Mid December with 'Severe Pneumonia' after I'd shuttled him backwards and forwards to the doctor for 2 weeks because the antibiotics didn't work so he had 5 days of strong IV antibiotics followed by 14 days of Oral Antibiotics - so 5 weeks of antibiotics in total!

We host international students all year around, and some Italians had not long left when he got ill. We think he's had it.
