I’m writing this post through shock.

Over 40,000 people have died in our little country. 40,000 lives taken early. And no one cares. I’ve barely seen that figure mentioned in any of these threads, no mention of them or the hundreds of thousands of people who’s lives will be affected forever through losing them. Yet I know many people are reading this even now and saying ‘oh for god sake’ or ‘life goes on get over it’. Yes, life does go on, for us but not for them. And not for the thousands more who are going to die in the next wave because of the selfish ones who simply can’t stand to give up the life that they’re used to for a short while to fight this thing.

The government have been slow, and in being slow they’ve killed tens of thousands of people, they are trying not to take anymore risks... they’re now literally begging people to wear a mask and keep a few feet away for fuck sake and people can’t even manage that without kicking off, one comment ‘I just don’t like the feel of them on my face’ ... seriously?! Before you all think I must not understand or must not be struggling I’ve got two school age kids and we’ve taken a 50% pay cut whilst we juggle 3 jobs between us and homeschooling. By god I get the struggle. But I wouldn’t for a second put my struggle above someone’s life. There are NO excuses.

You know the figures, you’ve heard how dangerous this disease is, it’s not like flu, it’s a killer which leaves most who are lucky enough to recover with potentially long term problems. You know it’s highly contagious and you know that at least 30,000 a week are still being infected in your country. You know we are the second hardest hit country in the world (out of almost 200 countries?!). I’ve led what I consider a privileged life by living in the uk but I’m not letting that go to my head. People are acting like spoilt brats. If we went to war right now with the attitudes most people have we would be utterly fucked.

I’m not following this thread or reading the comments as everyone’s pissing me off too much, but christ I needed a vent... this country needs to get a fucking grip.

NowImLivinInExeter · 13/06/2020 20:50

What are you on about, that is all this board has been talking about for months Confused

What utter nonsense.

"you’ve heard how dangerous this disease is, it’s not like flu, it’s a killer which leaves most who are lucky enough to recover with potentially long term problems."

This isn't true. It leaves a small minority of people with longer term issues. A friend of mine is one of them, so I don't take it lightly, but this statement is hysterical nonsense. Please get your facts right before posting such a statement.

Hundreds of thousands of people have lost jobs, businesses gone to ruin, important surgeries pushed back, not seen family, friends or partners, some entirely alone with horrific MH, people who've had to endure lockdown with an abuser. Yet the majority have complied.

But you're right. No one cares as much as you, OP, and we're all selfish for worrying about anything non-CV related. If the number of excess deaths from other illnesses exceeds the amount from Covid, sure you'll be waiting in the wings to write an essay on that too? Ah, didn't think so.

TheGreatWave · 14/06/2020 00:02

I think the OP perfectly illustrates the general UK attitude towards death. It is just not accepted as something that does and will happen.* The rant there "40000 lives taken too early" some people were very ill and happened to catch covid, but it wasn't covid that actually caused them to die.

50000 excess death in the 2018 flu season.

Also the OP seems blissfully unaware of the fact that every day illnesses can cause life changing issues, seemingly innocuous accidents can leave people paralysed. If it has taken covid for you to realise that death and long term damage can occur that it is you that needs to take a long hard look at yourself.

  • I am not saying death and grief are not difficult and unpleasant, but it will happen to all of us and we don't like talking about dying and all that surrounds it.
HesterShaw1 · 14/06/2020 00:21

oh for fuck's sake

bumblenbean · 14/06/2020 00:36

So you don’t want to engage in any kind of discussion, you just thought you’d hop on to deliver a hyperbolic soliloquy about how awful and selfish everyone else in the country is and how we all need to be more like you? Really helpful contribution Hmm

Everyone is frustrated. Most people have suffered in some shape or form. Believe it or not you’re not the only one making sacrifices.

Wind your neck in.

You need to calm down about THE KILLER VIRUS
Ibake · 14/06/2020 00:45

Everyone up thread has said all I'd want to say so I'll just add a simple DFOD

greenroses1 · 14/06/2020 10:44

lol it's so obvious the O.P is reading all the comments

Deblou43 · 14/06/2020 10:57

OP you're an idiot end off

LittleRen · 14/06/2020 12:39

I care but I also care about all of the people who will be damaged by lockdown. We are lucky that our business is prospering but not everyone is in that same boat.

I care about everyone who hasn’t been able to go to the gp with lumps and issues, I care about those too scared to go to a&e. I was told by a dentist friend that he refers approx 10 people a week for suspected mouth and throat cancer, he hasn’t referred anyone since March - those 10 people a week still have suspected cancer.

Of course it’s incredibly sad and people care but this insanity needs to stop. Even I found myself terrified to go out for milk 2 months ago, now I am totally over that fear. This has damaged people for the long term.

Op, you need to educate yourself, I mean that gently. Before you post nonsense like this. The fatality rate is about 0.5 percent and the biggest symptom is no symptom. The vast majority of people who get it have a mild cold type illness or no symptoms at all. And those impacted are generally over 65 or with underlying health conditions, anyone else it’s is a tiny percentage.

Of course we care about those people and worry for outselves but posting made up shit doesn’t help anyone.
