Does anyone else think Chris Whitty is getting smaller?

He obviously lost weight while he was ill, his suits have been too big since then, but, to me, he still seems to be shrinking, almost withered. I hope he's OK, I'd imagine the stress and frustrations he's facing are huge.

Agreed. He looks completely exhausted Sad

I don't envy him his job at the moment.

PicsInRed · 11/06/2020 09:51

Presidents age rapidly, as do PMs.

I imagine, right now, Whitty's job is similar in terms of workload, lack of sleep, and the pressure to "get it right" for the survival of a nation of people.

Wouldn't want his job.

WhiteChocTwix · 11/06/2020 10:07

He needs looking after!

MyBubblesBurst · 11/06/2020 10:26

He seems to be only credible one in this whole shitshow, the only one I can trust to tell it like it is.

BrokenBrit · 11/06/2020 10:29

Yes I feel terrible for him.
Most of the scientist have tried to do their best, they have been used and hung out to dry by the government. The blame will be shifted onto them. They can’t win.

WowLucky · 11/06/2020 10:30

I like that he's prepared to publically correct the PM at the briefings. Obviously it's his job to make sure the correct message gets out but I can't imagine any of the others, especially the politicians, doing it.

I do wonder what's going on for him behind the scenes though. I hope he writes a book when this is over Grin

Talking of small, did anyone see Rishi Sunak on the news yesterday, blimey how tall is he, 3ft? He looked absolutely TINYGrin

B1rdbra1n · 11/06/2020 11:14

He looks like a man walking a tightrope😳

NotAnotherUserNumber · 11/06/2020 11:22

Stress and exhaustion. Now is not a good time to be a civil servant working on this. He is probably getting very little sleep and working non stop, all while knowing that nothing they do will make everyone happy and there will be constant criticism and vitriol.

EnlightenedOwl · 11/06/2020 11:30

His advice is taking this country into economic ruin. Listening to his pessimistic advice too much

Lisette1940 · 11/06/2020 11:33

He seems to have been a workaholic before this role. I agree he's getting thinner.

whatisforteamum · 11/06/2020 12:12

I love it when he is at the briefng. He tells it like it is.I especially loved it when he almost lost his temper with the journalists. They are not experts so hearing their ridiculous point scoring questions must be infuriating.I agree he needs looking after.I would happily cook for him.😊

B1rdbra1n · 11/06/2020 12:51

I think he's leaving the government in a tricky position, they can't risk getting rid of him because the public trust him but if they keep him he makes them look mendacious and stupid
he's skilled enough to walk the tightrope but at what price?
Boris is not as thin-skinned as trump but still it must wound him to stand next to someone so clever and be openly contradicted.

PicsInRed · 11/06/2020 13:15

Guys, don't panic, he's a grown man, I'm sure he can boil his own potatoes and starch his own shirts as well as his equally pressured female colleagues. 🤔

WhatWouldDominicDo · 11/06/2020 13:18

I heart Chris Whitty - I'd love to make him a nice, nourishing home cooked meal :) He looks as if he'd appreciate it.

Mumratheevergiving · 11/06/2020 14:34

Whitty was very measured yesterday in his explanation of how they will retrospectively analyse the timeline of decision making along with outcomes to learn lessons for future outbreaks. He was quite clear already that from the scientists / medical side the inabililty to test and trace at an earlier stage has been a failure of the UK Government response.

He jiggles his legs sometimes when standing listening at the podium - any body language experts know what that signifies? Perhaps he's imaging kicking Boris round the room as he's busy blurting out his mixed messages?

cathyandclare · 11/06/2020 14:50

Much of the problem in the early days was PHE's determination to only run tests in centralised labs which limited the numbers. So, Valance etc are responsible for some of the testing difficulties in March and April.

LoadsaBlusher · 11/06/2020 14:51

I just think he looks small because his suits are all very baggy

But he wouldn’t look himself in a skinny fit tailored suit

WowLucky · 11/06/2020 14:59

I think his suits a baggy because he's lost weight. They're not as big on him in pictures from the beginning of the crisis and his shirts are too big at the collar too, which they aren't in old photos.

wheresmymojo · 11/06/2020 16:51

A lot of people who caught COVID lost a lot of weight, one of the symptoms is anorexia.

Do you think he's lost weight since then?

I haven't been watching the briefings lately TBH

Casino218 · 11/06/2020 17:00

Bless him. Hope he's taking care of himself. He lives alone 😥

WowLucky · 11/06/2020 17:04

I don't know, when I saw him yesterday it seemed like his head had got smaller!

DH has lost a lot of weight during lockdown, yes I'm worried about him too, and it seems his head has got smaller as well. I've never noticed that about weightloss before.

OP posts:
OhyeahNoway · 11/06/2020 17:08

He said more than once yesterday that their have been many mistakes.

I bet Boris was Hmm

I like Chris.
I like Rishi as well, he sounds like someone else Will from the Intbetweeners

Splattherat · 11/06/2020 17:11

Shrinking...poor Baroness Harding is having to stand on a box so she can see over the podium.

PuzzledObserver · 11/06/2020 17:14

Speaking of stress - what's with Matt Hancock at the briefing today? Stumbling over his words...
