Does anyone else think Chris Whitty is getting smaller?

He obviously lost weight while he was ill, his suits have been too big since then, but, to me, he still seems to be shrinking, almost withered. I hope he's OK, I'd imagine the stress and frustrations he's facing are huge.

itsgettingweird · 13/06/2020 22:00

Love Jenny Harries. She's like pocket dynamite. I bet she has the best hard stare Grin

SecretSpAD · 13/06/2020 22:00

I'm a doctor 😁. I have three degrees (Medical one, PhD and masters of public health) 😁😁😁

Bagsy the pillow talk 😂

SecretSpAD · 13/06/2020 22:01

@itsgettingweird have worked with her. Totally brilliant human being.

OntheWaves40 · 13/06/2020 22:05

I wouldn’t like his job but then again I have a stressful job on NMW so I wouldn’t mind his salary for the stress!

SecretSpAD · 13/06/2020 22:06

Though saying that, if he's anything like my husband (who I love, adore and still think is the most amazing man on the planet) the pillow talk will consist of....

Should I start composting our waste?
Should we paint the study green?
I need to get some cement but can't remember how to make concrete?
Can I plant a rhodedendron in the corner of the garden?
How much would a new angle grinder be?

🤦‍♀️

Lisette1940 · 13/06/2020 22:13

Apparently he likes history SecretSpad. I have a history PhD GrinWink

Lisette1940 · 13/06/2020 22:16

Mind you I'm also married to someone with a history PhD and the pillow talk tends to be about the contents of our freezer and the state of the garden.

I'd make a special effort to discuss history for Professor Whitty.

WhiteChocTwix · 13/06/2020 22:16

@SecretSpAD yep! 😂

My DH stumbles out of his study grateful for a decent hot meal and whatever I've sorted in the house. Sudoku puzzles often feature in the week 😂🤦‍♀️

SecretSpAD · 13/06/2020 22:19

contents of our freezer and the state of the garden.

Ha that's my usual themes. Alongside whether that green that farrow ams ball say is silver in some lights really is silver....

SecretSpAD · 13/06/2020 22:21

@WhiteChocTwix i think we're married to the same man GrinGrin

Lisette1940 · 13/06/2020 22:21

Thank you for telling us @LuluJakey1

Female, huh?

Envy Hmm Grin

Lisette1940 · 13/06/2020 22:45

On the other hand at least he's not going through all the stress without support at home. I had thought he was single.

SecretSpAD · 13/06/2020 22:57

I'm glad too. It's a stressful, role and glad he's got someone to support him.

I know that the husband and I could not have done our stressful Westminster/civil service type, roles in the last 15 years without each other to whinge at.

Doing it all alone would have been horrible.

wheresmymojo · 13/06/2020 23:35

For those questioning how a symptom of COVID can be anorexia.

Anorexia is the medical term for loss of appetite.

Obviously I don't mean anorexia nervosa which is the eating disorder

@Mumratheevergiving I found the clip, it's from 26/03/20

George Parker from FT asks the question at 27:32 and Jenny Harries answers at 31:20.

LangClegsInSpace · 14/06/2020 11:01

For context, just the day before at the WHO press conference, Dr Tedros had said rather a lot more than just 'Test, test, test.'

He said:

To slow the spread of COVID-19 many countries have contributed or introduced unprecedented measures at significant social and economic cost, closing schools and businesses, cancelling sporting events and asking people to stay home and stay safe. We understand that these countries are now trying to assess when and how they will be able to ease these measures.

The answer depends on what countries do while these population-wide measures are in place. Asking people to stay at home and shutting down population movement is buying time and reducing the pressure on health systems but on their own these measures will not extinguish epidemics. The point of these actions is to enable the more precise and targeted measures that are needed to stop transmission and save lives.

We call on all countries who have introduced so-called lock-down measures to use this time to attack the virus. You have created a second window of opportunity. The question is, how will you use it? There are six key actions that we recommend. First, expand, train and deploy your healthcare and public health workforce. Second, implement a system to find every suspected case at community level.

Third, ramp up production capacity and availability of testing. Fourth, identify, adapt and equip facilities you will use to treat and isolate patients. Fifth, develop a clear plan and process to quarantine contacts. And finally, number six, refocus the whole of government on suppressing and controlling COVID-19. These measures are the best way to suppress and stop transmission so that when restrictions are lifted the virus doesn't resurge.

The last thing any country needs is to open schools and businesses only to be forced to close them again because of a resurgence. Aggressive measures to find, isolate, test, treat and trace are not only the best and fastest way out of extreme social and economic restrictions; they're also the best way to prevent them.

We still haven't done half of this 2 1/2 months later.

It was so blatantly obvious we should have locked down earlier. Chris Whitty was the one who advised not to. He totally invented the idea of lock down fatigue and used this to advise a later lock down. In addition to this being entirely his own invention, he cannot possibly be as clever as everyone thinks he is if he did not realise that an earlier lock down meant a shorter lock down. Hindsight is not 2020. I was saying this at the end of February. At best, it was an honest mistake. At worst, he kept quiet and allowed politicians to make a choice that cost tens of thousands of lives.

I hold Whitty as responsible for this mess as Johnson. He absolutely minimised this at the point he should have been advising action. Not a fan.

WhatIsTheActualPointOfMe · 15/06/2020 10:00

According to Sky, CW and PV are on "resignation watch", obviously not happy with Boris totally ignoring their scientific adviceHmm

Lisette1940 · 15/06/2020 10:24

nellodee he supposedly based it on his experience of patients not finishing medication courses. I think the post action review is going to be very humbling for all concerned.

SecretSpAD · 15/06/2020 19:48

mrs whitty....is that you?!

Shh WinkGrinGrin

My actual husband does bear an uncanny resemblance though.....even if he denies it.

SecretSpAD · 15/06/2020 19:52

Although judging by some of the threads on here, lockdown fatigue appears to have been a thing, so maybe he's not all wrong?

I don't know. I'm not enough of an epidemiologist!
