Face masks

With the announcement that face masks should be worn on public transport and when used correctly they can stop spread of infection,
Can anyone advise how they should be used?
Do they need to be washed after every trip etc?
I’ve seen lots of people adjusting theirs/using them multiple times (my neighbour hangs theirs on their car mirror)

I heard an infection specialist on the radio (I think) saying have at least three, have a plastic bag by the door, put in bag as soon as home, EITHER wash in bag and then dry or leave in bag for three days, cycle between the three or however many you have. So wash them or isolate them each day basically. I like the idea of bag by the door - creates routine and awareness.

Yes I like the bag idea, thank you

Are they still effective if you’re taking them on and off through the day, say for example I take it off while walking but pop it back on for the bus?

Well, there are the n95 masks, they need to be cleaned at least every 40 h but I clean them daily it does not take much time, then I have community masks - they go into the 60° wash.

As they only serve to reduce the risk I pose to people in my 'breath cloud' (+ sd of course) and are not meant to be sterile, taking them on and off does not really cause a problem.

They are compulsory over here.
