Holidays, to not go abroad, just for this year.

I know everyone wants a break, but I really feel this year staying in the UK makes far more sense.
We should get a nice warm summer, the virus risk and insurance worries about getting home if something happens make staying local a better idea, and the money we could put back into our own economy.

@trappedsincesundaymorn My issue is that education is not a priority for this government. While I understand that this may not be a priority above holidays for you personally, it should be a priority for us as a society to ensure that our children have access to education as the vast majority are not being properly educated at present.

Charlottejade89 · 10/06/2020 14:13

Weve had our wedding cancelled this summer and honeymoon, weve rebooked it for end of August for a week and as long as the flight is running nothing will stop me from getting on that plane. It will be our last chance to spend a week together with no children before baby no 2 arrives in december

Parker231 · 10/06/2020 14:57

@BackInTime - education should be a priority but it doesn’t mean that people can’t go on holiday as well.

WonderTweek · 10/06/2020 15:10

We were supposed to go to Finland this summer but there's no point in travelling if we're only going to be wound up about the possibility of catching the virus. That's mostly due to me being vulnerable and generally anxious though, I'm not really interested in what other people do as long as they're not putting others at risk.

We will save the money we would have spent on the holiday and hopefully put it towards emigrating in the next couple of years. 🤞

covidmonkey · 10/06/2020 15:22

We are going to Finland in July. I am Finnish so we can get in. We quarantine in our summer cottage.

WonderTweek · 10/06/2020 15:26

Haha. @covidmonkey Same. I am tempted to go to the cottage but I would love to see friends and family and I fear I might bring the virus to Finland. As silly as that sounds. But we'll see. Things may be different in a couple of months, or we may be able to go in the winter. Grin

Mumoblue · 10/06/2020 15:30

Surprised people are so offended that Cornwall wanted people to stay away from a place that has not enough hospitals during a global pandemic. Is that really something to get all precious about?

I'm not going on holiday. This year is a write off, basically. When I can, I'll visit my family. I haven't been abroad since 99.

MadameMarie · 10/06/2020 15:35

I certainly wouldn't travel abroad.

If your household is low risk then maybe a week away in the UK somewhere, while weighing up whether you would be welcome and what kind of holiday it would be. August might end up far too busy in tourist spots if foreign holidays are out the equation.

I live with someone quite vulnerable so will probably go nowhere till at least next spring.

Costacoffeeplease · 10/06/2020 15:44

I live in Portugal, and yes beaches and restaurants are slowly opening up, but with lots of restrictions and compulsory mask-wearing in enclosed spaces and even walking on the beach. No bars are open, unless they sell food, and everything has to close at 11pm

You will also have to wear a mask at both airports and on board planes, and in taxis/airport transfers

It’s not going to be like a normal summer at all

countrygirl99 · 10/06/2020 15:52

So many going to Finland! That should be my next trip (hopefully Nov/Dec) - Tampere where DS2 will be at university.

HairyFloppins · 10/06/2020 21:27

Well Norwegian have cancelled my flights to the USA for August so I guess that's it for this year. Costa del Garden it is.

Weetam68 · 10/06/2020 21:44

Even considering leaving these shores until this situation is resolved is frankly illogical.

Parker231 · 11/06/2020 08:20

No one knows when the ‘situation is resolved’. Are you planning on going nowhere until there is a vaccine? No chance - I’ll be on a plane to my parents and another to DH’s family as soon as we can. I still want my holiday later on this year.

countrygirl99 · 11/06/2020 08:24

Weetam what is logical will depend on individual circumstances, you cannot say that as a blanket statement.

blobbyface · 11/06/2020 08:45

We never go abroad on holiday. We usually have 1 week's holiday in the SW. We'll be staying firmly at home in our garden this year as it sounds as though it'll be busier than usual.
Can't people miss a year's holiday? I wouldn't be risking going abroad this year.

Parker231 · 11/06/2020 09:55

Why should we not travel? DH’s family is in Canada and the US and mine in Belgium - we want to see them and have our holidays.

Miljea · 11/06/2020 10:16

Actually, like others, I suspect we won't be particularly welcome in Europe this year, with the double whammy of how poorly we handled Covid19, and how badly we're screwing up Brexit with No Deal firmly on the cards.

I'll be staying at home this year.

....
You probably will be able to, just not until later in the year or next year. It is hard for those who look forward to seeing family every year but it will happen. It's the same for them, they cannot come here at the moment.

People in the UK can't visit relatives in Scotland or Wales just now.

ChasingRainbows19 · 11/06/2020 12:17

I'm staying in the uk. I don't go on beach holidays but city breaks or scenic relaxing trips. Holidays won't be normal anywhere. But trust me wearing a mask in heat is not pleasant ( I work on a very warm ward!). Adding risks of lockdown, quarantine while you are there. It won't be the kind of holiday I like. Measures are in place elsewhere too. Also don't like the thought of being on a plane or airport while this is going on.

All the above could apply to here too so it'll be assessed just before our work leave but what's the point in spending on a trip away if I can't relax in a restaurant or bar for example.

EmmaStone · 11/06/2020 12:18

My August holiday to France hasn't been cancelled yet, so I'm still hoping (having had 4 holidays cancelled between us as a family since lockdown so far), and I've taken a punt on the cheap flights for October and February half term. My boss feels the same and is happy for me to work from home if we have to do the 14 day quarantine by then. Not brilliant for the kids, but as being in school full time isn't yet on the cards, I'm feeling bullish TBH. I'm desperate to go somewhere new.

MyBubblesBurst · 11/06/2020 12:38

Would not consider holiday in this country, saving up till there is a vaccine and then can go abroad again

diked · 11/06/2020 12:40

we're off to croatia in august. by car. cant wait

vengeancer · 11/06/2020 13:03

I have booked 2 weeks in Europe in July/August. I will WFH when I am back as the DC's holiday club is not running and no childcare.

I visit my very elderly and ill parents. I usually go every 3 months as they need help with lots of things. For me, this is nothing that can wait another year. I am happy to to take the risks.

Miljea · 11/06/2020 14:34

diked for fear of derailing the thread (sorry!), what route to Croatia are you taking, over how many days?

MadameMarie · 11/06/2020 16:25

It depends on your situation. If you need to visit family or something then you might take a risk.

I won't be going on a holiday until it's resolved. I'd re-evaluate next summer if everything is still up in the air but the economy will have collapsed by then anyway and the Brexit fall out leading to holidays being the last thing to think about.

It just seems pointless this summer to have a domestic holiday with all the restrictions in place, let alone getting on a plane for a 'holiday'.
