Holidays, to not go abroad, just for this year.

I know everyone wants a break, but I really feel this year staying in the UK makes far more sense.
We should get a nice warm summer, the virus risk and insurance worries about getting home if something happens make staying local a better idea, and the money we could put back into our own economy.

I’m not going anywhere in the country because I don’t think it’s safe. If it’s safe enough to travel to Cornwall it’s safe enough to go to Europe.

My current plan is to stay at home for the summer.

@MadameButterface

op, just checking that you know holidays aren't compulsory and some people never go abroad at all?
Exactly. I've never understood people's insistence that you have to go abroad for a holiday. Ive been told that holidays in the UK aren't actually holidays Hmm

I haven't been abroad since 2003. Although we were meant to be going to Paris this year - I'm still hoping it gets cancelled

Legoandloldolls · 09/06/2020 17:10

I'm still waiting for TUI to cancel my July holiday. I wont be booking anything for next year unless I know its business as usual. I want to book a UK city break but cant even do that right now even for December.

Its te back garden for the foreseeable unless we opt for self catering in Haven ( fingers crossed they dont have to shut completely).

BackInTime · 09/06/2020 17:18

I agree OP. Amazing how holidays abroad seems to be higher on the agenda than schools reopening.

People also need to remember how Spain did not hesitate to quarantine an entire hotel full of people in Tenerife in February with just one confirmed case. While they are saying that tourists are welcome back they will not hesitate to lockdown/ quarantine again for any suspected cases.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 09/06/2020 17:23

Good for you OP. But I'll be on a plane later in the year hopefully.

DBML · 09/06/2020 17:23

You have to do what’s right for you OP and I hope you have a wonderful time in the U.K.

But I hope you’re not suggesting that we all think the same...I’ve got my flight booked for July 20th and if it’s going, I’ll be on it!

DBML · 09/06/2020 17:28

Right now, kids are getting a few hours a week before the holidays. That’s as good as it’s going to get until at least September. So I’ve given up on it. I’ve declined a place at school for my son for the remainder of the term. There’s no educational benefit for him. He won’t have any of his usual teachers. I can get more done with him at home.
Therefore next priority is vacations! Whoop!

We’ll worry about exams when we get home, but hopefully it’ll go ahead because we deserve this.

Nanalisa60 · 09/06/2020 17:30

I have no expectations of a sunny summer holiday this year, I will be staying at home, luckily I got one ski holiday in January the second One in March got cancelled I’m just keeping my fingers crossed for a ski holiday in January.

kenandbarbie · 09/06/2020 17:31

I am begrudgingly having a staycation this year after our France holiday was cancelled. I'm going to try to make the best of it, but I'd rather be in France Sad

Parker231 · 09/06/2020 17:33

As soon as we can we’ll be going to Belgium to see my family and to Canada to see DH’s. It’s now months since we’ve seen them so sooner the better. DH and I also want to go on our holiday to the US in October.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 09/06/2020 17:33

Ssh OP, that’s exactly what I’m planning when our September USA holiday gets cancelled. I’m hoping no one else plans on holidaying in the UK and we get the pick of the bunch.

TerrapinStation · 09/06/2020 17:39

I was thinking exactly the same, why is the premise of the thread that everyone has to go abroad every year Confused

Holiday where you like, no one is keeping a record

sunglasses123 · 09/06/2020 17:46

Have you seen some of the rip off prices Cornwall are charging? Dont get me started on the UK weather and the unwelcoming attitude. My SIL lives in Cornwall and she says that Cornwall dont want visitors hence the uplifting of prices.

I used to go on UK holidays when I was a child. The rain destroyed our holiday many times and in a caravan is the most miserable existence.

No thanks!

Exactly.

ffs.

Well as I don't have school age children anymore, then yeah a holiday abroad is higher on my agenda than schools reopening, so what?

countrygirl99 · 09/06/2020 19:52

My DC are adult so yes holidays are higher on my personal priorities. And my next trip will be to Scandinavia, so not even a beach holiday. I did have Wales planned this month, should be on leave now. Looking at the weather forecast I'm glad I'm not going.

Iamclearlyamug · 09/06/2020 20:13

I need to go abroad to spend time with my fiancé. I can’t do that by holidaying in the uk so I’ll be on a plane the second there’s one available, we’ve already been apart nearly 4 months

Rosehip10 · 09/06/2020 22:33

Have certainly re-considered visiting Cornwall when it would be possible to do so after the bile spouted by many who live there. It seems frustration with lack of services provided by central and local government and resentment of second homers (which the vast majority of visitors are not) has come across as hatred of all those who don't live in Cornwall.

LEELULUMPKIN · 09/06/2020 23:25

I cannot wait to get out of this country and will be on a flight the minute entry is allowed into where I want to go.

MaryShelley1818 · 10/06/2020 04:57

We have 2 remaining foreign holidays booked this year. Portugal and Spain for September/October.

I wouldn't be terribly upset if they were cancelled.

janet1267 · 10/06/2020 06:27

I was planning to visit Cornwall for the first time this year and looking forward to it. I won't be bothering. I'm planning to stay at home and I'll be on a flight to Italy or Greece as soon as it's possible.

Lynda07 · 10/06/2020 10:22

Very sensible, mummmy. It won't hurt anyone to go without a holiday for one year and we may be able to go somewhere later on in the year. This country is nice and I've had some lovely breaks in September.

Parker231 · 10/06/2020 10:26

It will hurt to miss a holiday this year ( or any other year). We don’t have any family living in the UK so we need to travel to see them. I don’t want to go on holiday in the UK. The sooner travel restrictions are lifted the better.

Hoppinggreen · 10/06/2020 10:28

I am not planning on going abroad this year and we have a holiday home in Spain! I might consider it in October but we will probably have a UK break with the dog instead.
We usually go abroad 4 or 5 times a year, won’t do any of us any harm to miss out this time

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 10/06/2020 11:56

Honestly, why are some posters so desperate for no one to go abroad all year? We all have free choice and will make our own judgements once travel is allowed. So, y'know, you do you and all that.
