When do we think things will get back to normal in schools

Hi
When do we think after school clubs/nurseries/holiday clubs will get back to normal.... wondering if I'll need to hire help from 3pm on a couple of days when I do a job I can't do from home (retail)

January.

Although I hope it’s earlier.

palacegirl77 · 08/06/2020 16:32

Look at the trends for Mondays - seemingly around 30-40 less deaths than previous Monday for last few weeks - one of the models showed opening schools much less risky after 15th June - maybe this is why. Certainly following the right path to getting numbers well down (also remembering how many of those are actually in the community). Definitely making progress.

RunRunRunAway · 08/06/2020 16:36

I really hope schools are back to normal by September. To be honest when they closed in March there was no way I thought it would be until September

BoardingSchoolMater · 08/06/2020 16:36

We have been told September. Full boarding. The planning involved in this is one reason why they have decided not to go back at all before that.

Itisasecret · 08/06/2020 16:46

I hope September, the government also need to pull their finger out NOW and make a plan for Y10 and Y12, the emotional damage this is doing to children who will have been out of school for six months by September is off the scale. Children who have exams next year, the face to face for many schools is pastoral.

I think with the the numbers going the way they are, we need classes back no later than September, it will start to cause irreparable damage after that. My child's primary school have not provided any online home learning or teacher interaction. My child is 'vulnerable' and I haven't had a phone call in weeks (EHCP). That would NEVER happen at my school where the teachers have been flat out.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/06/2020 16:46

Schools have to plan for part time learning now, as the current social distancing rules still stand. Doesn't mean it won't change. September is a long way off in terms of this virus.

Dadnotamum72 · 08/06/2020 16:47

Bit of an unknown and a guess at this stage, go back about 6 weeks with similar posts asking about foreign holiday this year and most on here thought it would be no chance all year, now look where we are.

Weepinggreenwillow · 08/06/2020 16:52

in reality, from everything I am hearing from schools and the media I am imagining schools wont be back to anywhere near reality untill well into 2021. It is an absolute travesty.
If this is soemthing that concerns you I would urge you to write to your MP about it as I have done (see this thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/3931348-Those-concerned-about-ongoing-lack-of-education-in-Spetember-and-onwards )

worzelsnurzel123 · 08/06/2020 16:55

September this year

thetoddleratemyhomework · 08/06/2020 17:21

It should be September. The french science minister said today that he thought it was a mistake to close schools at all based on the most recent available evidence as regards transmission by children and all kids there should be back at school this term before the holidays. We are behind them but not 3 months behind!

DamnYankee · 08/06/2020 17:23

They have told us (Colorado, US) they will have a plan in place by July. Usually we start in August, but they are floating a start date of 9/3 to give them extra time to prepare.
I would be very surprised if things went back to normal before January, but I would be thrilled to be wrong!

LockdownLou · 08/06/2020 17:33

Our college are planning for part time and socially distanced learning in September. We have been informed that this could change at the drop of a hat, however it’s still wise to plan for how Sept may look like with SD rules still in place.

It doesn’t matter if schools are planning for part time come September, it’s just that, a plan. They may well be back to school full time we just simply won’t know until we get to that point.

July and August to go yet. Two months is a long time in the corona world.

StSaulOfSnacks · 08/06/2020 17:33

Noone knows, but I'd be very surprised if it's business as usual in September.

Concerned7777 · 08/06/2020 17:36

I think schools will be the last thing to get back to normal the way it's going!

bonsaidragon · 08/06/2020 17:41

January. It certainly won't be September in secondary.

WhatILoved · 08/06/2020 17:50

Thanks for all these replies. What are people who can't work from home doing for childcare? If I hire a nanny it's pointless going to my (luxury) retail job as will lose money. I'm a childminder first half of week and have fully reopened until 1730.... half an hour earlier close to do all the extra cleaning. I feel this still gives parents a decent working day. I'm wondering if I should make this my full time job. The August holiday clubs don't seem to know if they can open yet. My son's nursery now asking for 1630 pick up. It makes me mad that Boris said employers will understand. I know I'm going to need to take lots of holiday days and so will husband obviously.

Well Matt Hancock said he hoped all secondary pupils will be back in school by September so am sure they will find a way to say that can happen.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/06/2020 17:57

No idea what I will do re childcare. It's not about employers "understanding", I physically cannot do my job from home so it's one or the other. If schools only open for, say, 2 days a week from September I could work those 2 days but it's not enough to pay the bills and I am a single parent so the only one bringing in any money.

I'm not going to be hiring a nanny on my £8.75 an hour wages!

That doesn't necessarily mean full time however! Our school will technically achieve that on the 29th June but every student will only have 3 hours a week in school.

Qasd · 08/06/2020 18:00

I am guessing the whole of the next academic year will be disrupted maybe back September 2021 assuming a vaccine by then?

IncrediblySadToo · 08/06/2020 18:01

Why did you chose to be a childminder part time & retail part time?

If your 'luxury retail store' makes redundancies, are you likely to be one of the ones let go? Would you get redundancy pay?

As a CM, there definitely won't be a lack of demand!

BigChocFrenzy · 08/06/2020 18:04

The government needs to get its priorities straight

Ridiculous to open restaurants, pubs, airports before reopening schools and after-school & holiday childcare
There is the risk of R0 rising again, which would further delay ft schooling

Kids have sacrificed several weeks of their education to save the lives of elderly and vulnerable adults
Schools should now be the priority as soon as there is wiggle room in R0

This would also help many parents get back to work, save their jobs & sanity

IncrediblySadToo · 08/06/2020 18:04

@starrynight19

Nuances - he might have said that, but that would not necessarily mean full time. He would included blended learning in that. Sound Bites.
Nimello · 08/06/2020 18:04

September 2021 is cloud cuckoo land for anyone who is paying school fees, not to mention anyone who will have to go back to work and so can't be home-schooling their children. Even if the government doesn't realise this, the schools do. My remaining DC at school is going back properly/full time in September, barring meteorites, earthquakes etc. That's what the school has said, anyway.
