I know there is a lot of differenc eof opinion on this, this isnt about teacher bashing etc.
But for those who are concerned about the potentail lack of access to full time education in September I would urge you to wrtie to your MP.
I have just done this to express my concern. I have never, ever done this before but I am so, so angry and upset about this I feel I need to do whatever i can, even if it will not help much.

This is my letter - to give you an idea....obviously everyone's individual circumstances will be different but the the general ideas will be similar.

Dear Mr xxxxxx,

In these difficult and challenging times I feel I need to contact you to request your help to address a matter of some urgency. I would like to know what the Government is planning to do regarding the current breach of Protocol 1, Article 2 of the Human Rights act which states that “No person shall be denied the right to an education.”

As an example I have 4 school aged children aged 12, 14, 15 and 18. None of them have received an education since March 17th this year. They have had some work set on line to be completed at home but I can assure that this does not in any way constitute an education. I am a doctor working full time in the NHS. My husband is a secondary school teacher.I fully appreciate all the many implications of this pandemic. I understand the reasons for school closures thus far. However this situation is simply unsustainable at this point. I am increasingly concerned that there seems to be no clear plan in place for a return to education for September. Part time schooling mixed with at home learning is being suggested by many schools. This will not provide my children with an education as both my husband and I will be working out of the home and will not be able to support the children with at home learning. I have been told if I instead chose to utilize the key worker children’s provision my children would need to remain in this “bubble” and would not be able to join their year groups on any day they were in school. The key worker bubble will not be being taught proper lessons unlike the year groups and so my children would be massively disadvantaged as well as missing out on being able to mix with their friends. Given that I have been working flat out in the NHS all through this, I find it incredibly unfair that my children may end up being penalised because of this.

Children all across the country are suffering massively. The many, many vulnerable children and those living in poverty are being placed at great risk of permanent harm. The impacts of this on young people’s mental health will be felt for many years to come.

A child’s right to an education is a basic human right. I understand why this has been temporarily suspended in these unprecedented circumstances but this can not be allowed to continue. I would remind you of the concept of Proportionality which applies when a basic convention is interfered with : this states that “Interference with a Convention Right must not be excessive, arbitrary or unfair, or have too severe an impact on a particular group or individual.” I would argue that interference with this particular human right is having a most severe impact on the group of the nation’s children and I would also argue that currently the interference seems to be both unfair and arbitrary.

I am not unaware of the many challenges of returning children to school safely in September, but I am greatly dismayed by the apparent lack of planning and problem solving that seems to be happening by the government. It was all perfectly possible to build extra hospitals (still unused) and to bring back retired NHS staff, but no such measures, or any other creative problem solving strategies, are being talked about to secure our children's futures it seems. Schools are confused, angered and frustrated at lack of discussion and planning from the Government. It would certainly seem as if the nation’s children and young people are a very low priority for the Government.

So please can you tell me, without further delay, how the Government plans to respond to this ongoing breach of a child’s basic human right to an education.

Yours Sincerely

Social distancing NEEDS to be dropped in education. This whole thing is disproportionate to the actual risk that these young people face and the vast majority of teaching staff. They do not have higher death rates than other professions.

People are starting to get really angry now. Who is shouting for the kids??? The young people’s rights and needs?

Utter madness this is. Pubs? Seriously? Yeah I can really see people abiding by the rules after a few pints (even in a garden).

Mothers - let your teens out, let them socialise!!

Milicentbystander72 · 09/06/2020 10:21

I'm so angry 😡

There's been more bloody airtime about getting the Football Premier League matches started again than opening our schools, especially Secondary schools. All the focus seems to be on Primary and the teens are being totally forgotten.

These years are short and crucial.

Weepinggreenwillow · 09/06/2020 10:27

lockdownlou agree absolutely. I will be actively encouraging my teenagers to socialise from now on. I am absolutely not prepared to sit back and watch their mental health unravel anymore.

And how do you think part time schooling is going to work? If business are asking people to go back to work and cannot offer that much flexibility...it isnt a simple answer.

As for let's just build more space where? The school on my road doesnt have anymore space so let's build it elsewhere? Then you have the travel to think about if you do that can a parent whose child goes to that school be able to drop them else where?

As for online teaching there have been plenty of threads on here how parents struggling to get their children to even do those so quite frankly that's resources and time wasted and again parents might have jobs they need to go back to and cannot leave kids home alone.

It might not be your job to come up with ideas but stop moaning they arent doing anything then also moaning social distancing needs to be in place.

The reasons why pubs etc are opening up is because they can put in social distancing for everyone who goes to the pub and right now its only those who have outdoor space that can open up.

CaspianSeaDog · 09/06/2020 12:25

I think each school is going to have to see what they have for staff who are willing and able to work without proper social distancing in September. Whether we like it or not teacher's will be at higher risk of contracting it.

KeepWashingThoseHands · 09/06/2020 12:40

@cyclingmad

Yes you've considered everything and because it doesn't work for you or your school no options are available at all and concern shouldn't be raised. Read the thread, no one is saying this is teachers fault.

It's comical people think social distancing is going to be observed in pubs and on planes.

Social distancing on planes? Ryanair boss as said he won’t even be keeping the middle seat free.

GabriellaMontez · 09/06/2020 13:11

Following.

And preparing to write to my mp.

In between flinging sandwiches at children and swiftly adapting my own self employed work.

Chaotic45 · 09/06/2020 13:37

@cyclingmad lots of children are doing all home learning Tass that are set including my own. I know which battles to pick, and ensuring that home learning is done is one of them. It's not been difficult to persuade them to do the work because TBH they know it's important.

However the work itself is a pitiful mash up of badly thought out worksheets or online tests from free websites with no marking scheme and no feedback whatsoever. I could go on but I won't as it's impossible to give an account of our home learning experience without teachers taking it as a personal insult.

I know some schools are making the best of a very tough situation, but Others are barely scratching the surface and no one seems to care.

onceuponatimer · 09/06/2020 13:46

@Weepinggreenwillow- excellent letter.
The situation is appalling.

MotherofPearl · 09/06/2020 15:59

I agree @LockdownLou. Young people are paying a terrible price for this lockdown: educationally, mentally and socially. It's horrendous. I am now allowing my 12 year old out every afternoon to see her friends in the local park. Her mental health really needs it. She works hard on her online school work each day until 3pm and then cycles/runs to the park for exercise, and to socialise. I refuse to sacrifice her wellbeing any longer.

My other two DC are younger which makes it trickier. I have written to my MP and am awaiting a reply.

Pertella · 09/06/2020 16:08

Filling in worksheets and doing online quizzes is NOT the same as actually receiving an education.

Yes. But there would have been a terrible price in every eventuality. At least this way their grandparents are still here, minus the odd 50 000 or so.

Chaotic45 · 09/06/2020 16:42

Yes yes yes @Pertella. Thank you for this. I thought I was going mad. DS gets multi choice test after multi choice test, with no mark scheme, no explanation for wrong answers etc.

He's really struggling with the work set, it's dull, unrewarding, repetitive, of spurious educational benefit. I'm not convinced he's actually learning anything and I'm tempted stop him doing the 'set' work and set stuff myself using some of her good resources I hear about online.

I really don't want to offend good teachers doing their best but in our case things are so far from ideal.

MotherofPearl · 09/06/2020 17:57

Thanks @Nonotthatdr, that's a really interesting blog piece. I agree that we all have to accept some level of risk, or we will never be able to move forward.

Weepinggreenwillow · 09/06/2020 18:08

nothat good article. It really sums up some of the concepts I think people have forgotten, or maybe never realised.

I've written to local ministers using the bones of your letter OP. I just cannot believe that this is being allowed to happen to children. I'm in NI, the numbers in my area are so so low, but there seems to be a One Size Fits All approach and no common sense at all.

My heart is broken for my children. This I so far from ok.

sleepydragons · 09/06/2020 18:27

I've got a slightly more practical consideration, school is opening on Monday for lessons taught by my DCs own teacher to supplement the online teaching which will be in the afternoons only. They've been asked to wear clean clothes daily (which I agree with) and to make this easier it doesn't have to be school uniform. Unfortunately this makes it harder for me as DC has three sets of school trousers and school shirts which are easy to get dry in between wears but only two sets of weekend clothes. I've just had to spend £150 to buy 3 pairs of trousers, 3 tops and 2 hoodies so they have enough clothes to get through the week with clean each day as I work full time out of the house and can't get laundry washed and dried in one evening ready for the next day.

Not that this is the school's fault of course, their approach is right but it's hard financially for me.

Barbie222 · 09/06/2020 19:04

@sleepydragons I am confused as to what you are complaining about. If the school uniform is easy to wash and dry why doesn't your dc wear their school clothes then?
I am sure the school's communication is just an attempt to make parents' lives easier - "wear what you want as long as it's sensible and clean."

Why did you feel the need to get all this extra clothing?

I am not sure this comes under the category of back to school stresses we need to worry about, tbh.

Drivingdownthe101 · 09/06/2020 19:05

Surely he can wear school uniform as long as he wears a new set of clothing every day? So 3 days of school uniform and 2 days of his weekend clothes?

Weepinggreenwillow · 09/06/2020 19:13

sleepy Im sure unifrom would be fine. Possibly school trousers with ordinary t shorts if he felt too formal in his shirts? You could get a pack of 5 basic T shirts for around £10. Im sure you dont need a large finacnial outlay.

OP posts:
majesticallyawkward · 09/06/2020 19:15

@sleepydragons your dc only has 5 outfits in total and 3 of them are school uniform? That's it? What do you in school holidays? And what have they been wearing during lockdown?

Also, you could have gotten 3 outfits much cheaper than £150.

sleepydragons · 09/06/2020 19:21

Because they have specifically said not to wear uniform. Would you want your child to be the only one wearing uniform?

Yes. That's it. We don't all have a lot of money. During lockdown they have been wearing stuff from last summer which is very casual - shorts and so on which aren't suitable for school.

During the holidays..we are home more and wash them more often and he will wear things for two days.

It might not come under back to school stresses that you need to worry about but it does for me.
