Labour councils preventing schools going back

So it is mostly labour run councils across the country that are preventing state school children from going back in their areas.

Within these areas most private schools are reopening and state schools are not. So much for being the party that wants to close the attainment gap. Talk about playing party politics with children’s welfare, mental health and education.

How do you know your child was at the top of the class? I hear this so much on MN but I’ve never known a teacher to categorise a child as such.

R rates have been coming out every week for ages. Not just this week. It was close to 1 in north east so they delayed. And north west delayed initially because it was high now they’ve delayed again because it’s gone over one. Every school and council are basing this on risk assessments. Derbyshire delayed opening and they’re Tory. Several labour London areas are going back because it was deemed safe. The issue is safety stop politicising it.

I'm in a conservative run area, schools are only taking key worker children currently and are waiting for the gov 5 key targets to be met (which the gov have dropped) hopefully it won't be too much longer as it will mean the inflection rate is low.

I saw this on another thread. Campaign emerging around schools and the rights of children in all this www.usforthem.co.uk/evidence There’s also a Twitter page. I’ve only had time to briefly look but thought some of you may be interested.

Looked at the website but lost interest when I saw the lead scientist is Rob Veverk of the Alliance for Natural Health, who promotes pseudo science & homeopathy. Not sure he’s best placed to be commenting on epidemiology & safety of re-opening schools.

I live in a labour area.

Some schools are back, some aren’t.
Completely depends on the school.

There’s no level playing field that’s for sure.
Plenty of people shared going back to school pictures of their younger kids today but yet mine isn’t entitled to go back. Two schools half a mile away from each other, one is open, the other isn’t.

@mac12 oh no! I didn’t know there was that link. I’ll probably support it tho as there’s nothing else campaigning for children’s right to education. It’s not perfect but it’s all we’ve got Sad

Utter nonsense. Our school said there were no places BEFORE the council stopped openings (quite rightly).

I live in and work in Education in Tory council area The council is keeping all schools closed. My dd2 goes to school in the next borough which is labour (about 4 streets away from where we live) and her school reopens on Wednesday.
The council area where dd goes to school is a very deprived area and the thinking from them was that kids in that area need to be in school on a balance of risk. Where as the area I work is more affluent and apparently there balance of risk is the reverse. The irony is my dd2 school which is opening has a low rate of pp and vc children and the school I work in has a very very high rate of pp and vc students. I think councils are trying to do what is best based on the advice they are given by their local public health officials. I don’t disagree with either councils stance as much as I would very much like to go back to work and my dds to go back to school there is no easy solution.

@mac12 I don’t see any reference to the Rob guy? Where did you see that?

Of course the R number goes up when you start relaxing lock down.

They really weren't. We were set to open on Monday and the decision to delay another 2 weeks was taken yesterday based on advice from the Tory council about the R rate.

That's an odd mispaste. I waseant to be replying to PPs comment that decisions about opening are made weeks in advance.
