Labour councils preventing schools going back

Carycy · 06/06/2020 23:13

So it is mostly labour run councils across the country that are preventing state school children from going back in their areas.

Within these areas most private schools are reopening and state schools are not. So much for being the party that wants to close the attainment gap. Talk about playing party politics with children’s welfare, mental health and education.

The BBC news has something one a school closing because 2 teachers have Covid. If you read it though, the school opened on Monday and the teachers tested positive on Wednesday. So they caught it before school started not from pupils.

Overall it is labour. Obviously there are exceptions but I do still believe that this is becoming political and our children’s futures are being affected by this.

Welcome to MN, Carycy

How resistant you are to providing facts. Oh, I see you're generalising from your own "experience".

Tsk, tsk. 4/10

RoseGoldCloud · 07/06/2020 00:11

Anecdotally is agree with the OP about private schools. State schools told not to open debt LA here but the local private schools here do seem to be opening as are the private nurseries (I know parents who have children at them before anyone asks for a source Hmm)

LilyMarshall · 07/06/2020 00:12

Thats aNother really old article in relation to this. It isnt accurate at this point.

RoseGoldCloud · 07/06/2020 00:12

*I’d

DameLucy · 07/06/2020 00:12

Yep you’re right 😡

RoseGoldCloud · 07/06/2020 00:15

Well find a more recent article then if you want one? I’m not your personal article researcher @LilyMarshall

PickAChew · 07/06/2020 00:17

It's no coincidence that many of those Labour Council areas are densely populated urban areas with a higher infection rate. Our labour LA presides over numerous mining villages and has been encouraging people to get out and about.

LilyMarshall · 07/06/2020 00:19

My point would be, is there actually one? Councils were making decisions to stay closed well into the night On Friday. We don't actually have accurate information on which schools and councils are staying closed to most pupils and just open for key worker children.

Im most interested in finding a source that states most private schools have gone back, which was the reason op started the thread. Because i just can’t find anything of the sort. I just can’t find anything to support it.

echt · 07/06/2020 00:23

If you're going to the trouble of posting in support of the OP, then it makes you look a teeny bit better-informed if you you're up to date. Of course if there's no such info out there then you're fucked.

But so much easier to blame those who'd like an evidence-based debate.Hmm

Astabarista · 07/06/2020 00:23

The north has a higher R rate. The north has more Labour councils.

Labour councils are more prevalent in poorer areas as is Coronavirus.

The truth is Labour councils which happen to have a higher R rate are wisely keeping schools closed.

You’re politicising this unnecessarily with your false equivalence.

Astabarista · 07/06/2020 00:25

Private schools in our area aren’t back or the neighbouring area or my sisters area. Interested to know where these fabled schools are!

Do you mean academies? They’re opening against council advice in some northern areas.

Stupid of them really when the r rate is over 1.

Not private though.

MrsHerculePoirot · 07/06/2020 00:30

Those pesky labour councils. Trying to keep everyone safe!

PickAChew · 07/06/2020 00:30

The northwest has a higher R rate. The northeast has a low R rate.

Auntieelsie · 07/06/2020 00:34

Well that’s embarrassing for a first ever post.
Not orthodox town! North west town. I’m glad they’re not going back. It’s much too risky right now.

RoseGoldCloud · 07/06/2020 00:37

@echt my children’s schools are definitely closed to all but key workers. Why do you need me to provide evidence. Do you not believe me?

Auntieelsie · 07/06/2020 00:37

Well that’s a bit weird . Thought I’d put up a load of gobbledegook, but not it seems. Well my first venture is going well Grin

RoseGoldCloud · 07/06/2020 00:48

Just to be clear I’m not in the north west or suggesting they should open schools in the north west or anywhere else that has an local outbreak

RoseGoldCloud · 07/06/2020 00:54

OP I have concerns too but I do think the situation will probably change 2-3 weeks into this half term. If schools opening has an impact we will be able to see it by then in those areas that did reopen. If there’s no impact then I hope the local LA will give the go ahead. My biggest concern is that I don’t think anything will change significantly even by September so how on earth are we going to educate children through all this! I can’t imagine how hard it is for young people studying for their GCSEs or a levels!

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 07/06/2020 00:56

Private school children have higher attainment than state school children.
This is news how?

echt · 07/06/2020 01:31

echt my children’s schools are definitely closed to all but key workers. Why do you need me to provide evidence. Do you not believe me?

Because you posted with a claim to have substantial data in support of the OP, except it wasn't. Anecdote does not equal data.

RoseGoldCloud · 07/06/2020 01:33

@echt Where did I say I have substantial data in support of the OP?

Carycy · 07/06/2020 07:43

A lot of the decisions were made before the R numbers went up.

Of course the R number goes up when you start relaxing lock down. But why on earth have schools not been seen as a priority? The schools could have been back for weeks by now but instead we have had McDonald’s, crowds on the beaches, allowing parties in the back garden etc etc first. Children really have been put to the back of the queue in all of this in terms of needs.
