Mustbetimeforachange · 05/06/2020 21:21

Do you mean R is above 1?

Bol87 · 05/06/2020 21:23

Above R? R isn’t the figure. I assume you mean R is above 1? It appears to be in the North West & South West ..

maybemaybeII · 05/06/2020 21:25

Stay home as you were during lockdown? Shopping delivered, work from home, homeschool.

Wear PPE when you go out? Face mask, gloves, maybe even a Perspex visor?

What am I missing here?

I live in central London and was out and about right up until lockdown, never got the virus. Had an antibody test to prove it.

howdidwegetheremary · 05/06/2020 21:25

I’m in NW this has really concerned me too. I feel in despair this evening. I know that sounds dramatic.

OP I really share your concerns re shops. I have to go to the bank tomorrow morning and I just don’t want to.

Northernsoullover · 05/06/2020 21:27

You don't please Boris. I assume you know the risks? I'm not planning on doing anything different than I've already been doing. I will maintain my distance from others, not use public transport and I'll keep away from other households.
The virus hasn't gone away.

randomer · 05/06/2020 21:28

sorry, I got my words mixed up We were told to worry if R was above 1. well it is.

OP posts:
randomer · 05/06/2020 21:29

I know the risks, I have carried out a modest, safe life and will continue to do so. its terrifying.

OP posts:
Mrskeats · 05/06/2020 21:29

And yet loads of people on here advocating everything back to normal ConfusedI'm in the north west and worried too.

PatriciaHolm · 05/06/2020 21:31

Remember its not just about the R, its about how many people have it right now. Estimates are that less than 1 in 1,000 of us do. So not only would you have to meet that 1/1000, you would have to be in sufficient proximity to them for a sufficient period of time to catch it.

Realistically, unless you are in a closed environment next to the infectious person for more than a few minutes, it's very very unlikely to happen.

randomer · 05/06/2020 21:32

I am very worried, we were told the R thing was critical, now its basically stuffed.
Dense population centres, high BAME population, pockets of poverty, people forced back to work on public transport....its a disgace.

OP posts:
Mrskeats · 05/06/2020 21:34

So local lockdowns next then?

attackedbycritters · 05/06/2020 21:34

Bunker down, and if enough people do that it will go down again. It's up to the sense of people now though, we can't rely on the government

twinnywinny14 · 05/06/2020 21:36

If the number of infected people is falling surely the R should drop too? I think we deserve to be told what the r rate in each region is. How can we be expected to know how much to follow the rules or not if we don’t know the full picture? By this I mean stick within the rules obviously but there is a scale between doing as little as possible and doing everything as allowed. I would welcome the option to make my decision but cannot do that without knowing he r rate and infection numbers in my area

madasamarchhare · 05/06/2020 21:38

I think people need to take responsibility for themselves. It doesn’t matter what the government says you can do. If you aren’t happy then don’t do it! Really, idle you wash your hands frequently. Maintain social distancing when out and go out as infrequently as possible then really you should be reasonably safe.
Just because the shops are open doesn’t mean you have to go.

randomer · 05/06/2020 21:40

the R varies regionally. We were told loud and clear to be concerned if it went about 1. It is above 1 , where I live. I despise this sad apology of a government.

OP posts:
Mrskeats · 05/06/2020 21:47

I don't think we can just blame the government. They didn't force people to go the the beaches in droves. People are idiots. That's the main problem.

OP posts:
randomer · 05/06/2020 21:52

so you think its fair theat the NW should be thrown under a bus , in order to make the shambolic fools look good?

OP posts:
Ughmaybenot · 05/06/2020 21:53

It’s easy to bemoan the government but they are what they are and while I disagree with the way some things have been done, you just have to deal with this situation as best you can. Be sensible, limit social interaction, wash hands often, all common sense stuff. Take control for yourself.

Delatron · 05/06/2020 21:53

What @PatriciaHolm said. The R number is only part of the picture. You need to look at the infection rate for your area.

Being careful is sensible though.

I do think we may see restrictions on a local level. Rather than national lockdown again.

THATscurryfungeBITCH · 05/06/2020 21:54

Also north west and baffled that on todays briefing it was repeatedly stated we are still under 1!

Drivingdownthe101 · 05/06/2020 21:56

Just carry on doing what you’re doing.
The R rate on its own is fairly meaningless. It refers to the number of people an infected person passes if on to.
In order for an infected person (remember that’s around 1 in 1000 people) to pass it on to you, you need to be in close contact with them. If you’re social distancing, then that shouldn’t happen.

Mrskeats · 05/06/2020 21:56

Don't know what you mean randomer

BigChocFrenzy · 05/06/2020 21:57

Everywhere has idiots, or indeed people with good reason to congregate:
any government needs to allow for this in its strategy

In Germany, the system is very localised lockdowns around any new outbreaks in e.g. care homes, meat plants, church, DPD depot
Then everywhere else continues with relaxation measures

So regional and national R0 may briefly exceed 1,
but with only a few hundred daily cases in Germany and daily deaths in single or double digits, it doesn't matter for a few days.

May be OK in the UK regions as well, if only local hotspots are driving up R0, with little community spread.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/06/2020 21:58

Can you find out where you local cases are ?
If mainly in care homes etc, then your normal social distancing should be enough
