What planet is Johnson on?

SistemaAddict · 03/06/2020 12:20

If he thinks that most people are sticking to the guidelines? Does he not watch the news? Does he not go outside? None of my neighbours have stuck to the guidelines, nor have my family, my mum's neighbours, mum's friends. My neighbours have told me how busy it is in our small town and on the leisure paths and canal tow paths. I live on a street of less than 12 houses and the neighbours have to pass my house on their way in and out before anyone says about curtain twitching. I do gaze out a lot though as it beats looking at the walls all day.
Is he oblivious to the beaches, the beauty spots, the parties, the fines issued by police?

Technically I can now go out (shielded) but it's not safe for me to do so as there's no social distancing anywhere that I could go for a walk. I can't drive so can't go anywhere it might be quieter.

I'm just watching PMQ and I'm a little Confused at Johnson's claims.

I understand there's debate on the restrictions and I don't want to get into that but to completely ignore the breaching of them and pretend they aren't happening baffles me.

How do people actually know if others in their area are sticking to the rules?

wowfudge · 03/06/2020 13:18

You've implied most people aren't sticking to the rules, but the evidence doesn't support that. He is utterly useless. I didn't vote for the shower he leads. Small comfort.

feelingverylazytoday · 03/06/2020 13:20

@Katinski

So, if 'everyone' is sticking to the rules, how come we have the highest rate of CV in Europe?Confused
I don't think we do actually. I think that's Sweden or possibly Belgium. But in any case, there appear to be many complex factors why different populations are affected differently.
Derbygerbil · 03/06/2020 13:21

Where are these places where everyone is behaving like normal? Is it geographical or types of estates?

IndiaMay · 03/06/2020 13:21

I dont know anyone who has massively broken the rules yet (eg I know some people who have gone to the corner shop for some orange juice when that's not an essential trip). But I don't know anyone who's has broken any rules beyond that. Not sure I've noticed anyone breaking them either.

Bizarreathon · 03/06/2020 13:23

So, if 'everyone' is sticking to the rules, how come we have the highest rate of CV in Europe - blame has to be attributed to the ‘late to the party’ failures of Johnson to prepare for a pandemic situation as was shown in the report on the 2016 exercise to test systems where everything that ended up being a major problem was highlighted. Johnson not attending 5 COBRA meetings showing his disdain for such matters. Then being too late to implement lockdown despite other European countries such as Italy begging him to do lockdown, not having sufficient PPE ordering and distribution systems in place, not shutting borders or even temperature testing arrivals at airports, running the NHS into the ground so it ended up discharging infected patients back into care homes, failing to effectively set up and implement a test, track and trace system that has proved the major factor in containing spread to in other countries with much lower death rates. The list is endless.

Ontopofthesunset · 03/06/2020 13:24

Most people are sticking to the rules. There are millions of people in this country so what seems like 'most people' to you are probably a minority. Most people could of course be as low as 51% or as high as 99%. In reality, it is probably somewhere in between with the majority of people sticking to the rules most of the time.

pussycatinboots · 03/06/2020 13:24

@Redolent

He looks panicked, wild-eyed, blustering with faux-rage. A picture of incompetence and bloated privilege.
You mean he looks his normal self?
Hopeful201 · 03/06/2020 13:26

Around our area people are sticking to the rules, we also haven't had any infections reported recently. My thoughts are that they are expecting a certain amount of compliance, which will decrease over time.

Dilemmas123 · 03/06/2020 13:26

People pretty much still sticking to the rules in this part of London.

Hopeful201 · 03/06/2020 13:29

@twinnywinny14

How do people actually know if others in their area are sticking to the rules?
As there is little traffic, people are social distancing. I haven't seen any large gatherings. The parks are empty, big fields empty. I went to the supermarket and 75% of the people were wearing face masks, more than I've noticed before. Maybe the mayhem starts later in the day.
DameXanaduBramble · 03/06/2020 13:29

Those saying their town, or whatever, are sticking to the rules, how do you know, exactly? Itonya etc...

Ontopofthesunset · 03/06/2020 13:29

And maybe the OP has a particularly rebellious family, group of friends and street. My London borough has, I believe, one of the lowest death rates in the country and most people are following the rules most of the time. And of course the rules have always been guidelines - "shop only for essential things like food and then as infrequently as possible" was not a law. We were shopping for food no more than once a week 12 weeks ago, but now we are much more likely to go to our corner shop 3 or 4 times a week if we run out of butter or beer. The R rate is about 0.4 in my area.

Heatherjayne1972 · 03/06/2020 13:31

People have been bringing themselves out of lockdown for weeks here
Numerous Parties and bbq during the hot weather From my back neighbours
My road is much busier with cars and people- it’s back to normal really

IMO It’s a mixed message. The news is full of shops garden centres fast food places opening discussion about schools returning

People are slowly going back to work (those of us furloughed who still have a job anyway) and going to parks beaches and other outdoor places
And yet we’re still meant to stick to ‘the rules ‘. Still can’t see family/ Etc ( unless you are in government)

Io

FurForksSake · 03/06/2020 13:32

The reasons are rates are high are mutifaceted

  • slow to lockdown
-lockdown was very soft -lack of PPE in social and healthcare -lack of testing to identify clusters -lack of targeted messaging to anyone that speaks any language but english -no compulsory mask wearing in confined spaces -abandoning tracing very early on -return C19 positive residents to carehomes -not enforcing self-quarantines.

Other countries have a 1m or 1.5 SD guideline, I don't think that the beaches and beauty spots will push things up massively. There hasn't been the predicted VE day bank holiday bump, has there?

BoJo needs to be honest, we want figures, we want robust data and them to lead by fucking example.

AudacityOfHope · 03/06/2020 13:36

The planet he's on is one where he says, with a straight face, that's he 'proud' of our record on Coronavirus. You know, where we have so far lost the equivalent of a football stadium full of people.

He's a fucking narcissistic psychopath.

LivingOnAnIsland · 03/06/2020 13:39

We're still sticking to the rules around here.

DameXanaduBramble · 03/06/2020 13:40

You cant possibly know that for sure.

Scotinengland76 · 03/06/2020 13:42

Most people must be or the deaths and infections wouldn’t be decreasing.

fairislecable · 03/06/2020 13:43

Where I live everyone is sticking by the rules.

My family are spread out over many areas of the UK and they and their friends are all social distancing.

The London ones have more of a problem as dense urban areas don’t lend themselves to well to distancing.

If the majority can comply for the greater good then hopefully we can deal with the mass morons.

Drivingdownthe101 · 03/06/2020 13:45

How do people actually know if others in their area are sticking to the rules?

Well I go to the shops and see everyone queueing, following the arrows on the floor and maintaining social distancing. I’ve been to local parks and everyone appears to be in household groups and maintaining distancing from others. My neighbours have had friends/family round the past few days but in the garden and at 2m distancing. All my local friends are abiding by the rules unless they’re outright lying. I have seen some groups of teenagers recently sitting on the grass, all sitting apart from each other and chatting.
So while I’m sure some are not obeying the ‘rules’, as far as I can see most are.

imsooverthisdrama · 03/06/2020 13:48

I don't know why you think people are not sticking to the rules . Most are , the papers have shown a few pictures , but most are social distancing and yes the canal paths are busy since the weather is nice and there is no where to go people are allowed to exercise.
If your worried don't go out but a little walk round the block would do you good . Go earlier in the morning or evening when quieter.

sirfredfredgeorge · 03/06/2020 13:48

Given you live in a place where you say it's impossible to go for a walk without coming within 2m of someone else, it's very clear that you live in quite an unusual place for the UK, there are no areas I know of that are remotely like that. That sort of environment is normally only found in the serious slums of the world, not here.

Perhaps realise your personal experience is just completely atypical, especially if you've not even left your house which is stuck in this area of extremely tightly packed housing without even roads to walk on.

Alsohuman · 03/06/2020 13:50

Compliance with “the rules” is much higher than the government envisaged. Round here, they’re definitely complying. We went to a local reservoir yesterday, first day open and everyone was complying. The cafe was doing takeaway, the loos were open and it was all fine.

okiedokieme · 03/06/2020 13:50

Where my house is (I'm not there now at dp's as can wfh) nobody is sticking to the rules. Older neighbours with underlying health problems had grandkids (mum is sahm) around most days to play in their garden because they had a slide, otherside had a party (outside but before lockdown was eased). I have had to travel due to complicated reasons, very outing, otherwise I've stuck to rules. Out and about even in April people were ignoring distancing, lots of teens on streets - the city has a low incidence still, very low over 70 population.

I think my parents have stuck to them ...
