To Remind People Why We Locked Down

So many posts on here comparing the UK death rate to other countries.

People seem to be forgetting the point of lockdown was to slow down the hospital admissions and to learn how to treat the virus so more people can be saved in the long run.

Other countries may have lower death rates but it's still early days. It may come back with a vengeance (probably once inter national travel starts up again) and tiny Mediterranean islands with low death rates may be overwhelmed.

Only in 5/10/20 years time can accurate studies be undertaken to see which strategy / country had the best approach.

Until then the UK can not be shown the be mishandling the approach and those countries with currently low death rates aren't necessarily handling this better.

That's okay then. We'll just meekly accept whatever clusterfuck this government imposes upon us next. No point criticising anything, even the absolute screw ups might end up putting us in a better position when we look at it in ten years time.

I think there's room for the middle ground.

I do think people need to wait. It very well could end up that countries that are doing well now end up worse off. And vice versa.

But I still think pekple can question the decisions and motives of the governement.

Thank you for the reminder OP.

It takes years to develop vaccines and as in the case of the yearly flu vaccines, they have to be constantly changed.

Countries have locked down to various degrees but they can't stay locked down forever.

We have to learn to live with COVID-19 just as we learn to live with all the other viruses and disease out there.

effingterrified · 30/05/2020 15:10

MsHeffaPiglet - so the fact that we have around 60,000 deaths and Thailand, which has a bigger population than us, has 57, is not a problem in your book, then?

We should just ignore those 60,000 people and their families, and not ask questions about why we lost 60,000 people and Thailand lost 1/1000 of that number?

You think that we should just learn to live with 60,000 unnecessary deaths in 3 months, then?

Out of interest, is there an upper limit in the number of UK deaths that you would regard as unacceptable, and that we should not just 'live with'?

And is there not even a little bit of you that is curious as to why the UK has fared so much worse than other countries?

effingterrified · 30/05/2020 15:13

That is not why we locked down. That is only one of the reasons we locked down.

We also locked down so that we could 'save lives'. Well that's failed.

And we locked down so we could buy some time for the government to put in place effective measures eg test, trace and quarantine, to prevent a second wave. That has not happened either.

I cannot see any rationale for ending the lockdown now. Nor can the scientists. That is why the Government is now ignoring the scientists.
