If it was okay for him to travel for childcare then why were people fined for travelling to get childcare?

Had he have said they left because the media were upsetting his child or wife and actaully made a point of it, when he did it. This wouldn't be an issue.

I dont know wether people were specifically fined for travelling for childcare.

I do lots of people who have been extremely stressed and depressed trying to wfh and provide childcare, when their parents live round the corner, because Boris specifically asked people not to use their parents as childcare. That its was a risk to their parents. Some single parents with no one else to share the care with. Or a partner who is a key worker.

I know several people who have had covid, struggle through with no help with their kids. Some single parents, because they were told if they had symptoms they had to stay in.

I know people who have had problems with their eyesight in general. They don't pack their kids into a car and drive a 50 miles round trip to test it. Because its fucking dangerous to everyone else on the roads. You know, these important key workers that were travelling to work?

My elderly auntie was very distressed after a visit from the police. Because my mum went round to help her up after a fall. They came and told her there had been reports that she had visitors. There was no apology , when she explained. No 'i see, sorry we had to visit....thats entirely within the guidelines.' She was told 'take this as a friendly warning'. She was very very upset.

So yes, theres been lots of people detrimentally impacted, that could have been supported better and had an easier time of it, if they had actually not listened to Boris.

Can’t believe the number of threads on this and all because he’s Tory. Don’t say it isn’t because when all the Labour MPs broke the rules, there wasn’t anywhere near the amount of threads, if any. Oh and where was the outrage when Nicola Sturgeon refused to sack her chief medical
Officer?

TabbyMumz · 27/05/2020 06:33

"Why should we hand wring about the 'scenes' outside his house? He's a public figure who abundantly brought all this upon his house."

Because it's wrong. Absolutely wrong. Despicable behaviour. They shouldn't even know where he lives. Everyone has the right to feel safe and not harassed.

devildeepbluesea · 27/05/2020 06:39

@Irnbroothenoo so you're not getting that it's not WHAT he did that angers people, rather the sheer bloody hypocrisy of having devised the rules and then deciding they don't actually apply to him?

Trevsadick · 27/05/2020 06:44

For me its got nothing to do with being a tory.

The bloody Labour MPs should have been brought to task.

Just like the Scotland CMO was. In all honesty, i only saw the Neil Ferguson, incident reported. I dont know about the other ones, apart from something I saw on Facebook. As far as I know, it wasnt as widely reported.

All of them should be dealt with.

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 27/05/2020 07:01

If people are going to froth, at least froth over 'truth' not made up crap.

He didn't use his parents as childcare & it wasn't his intention to, if they had needed childcare. He made that very clear.

He went for a drive the day before going home, as his wife suggested, because he hadn't been well and she wanted to see if he felt up to the long drive home. Lots of people would have done the same thing.

His son is 4, IF either of his parents had CV he's just as likely to have got it if they'd stayed at home in London as in the car.

They were getting nasty threats at the house, yet you'd rather his unwell wife & small child stayed there? (The 'rules' always allowed you to leave home In that situation)

If it was okay for him to travel for childcare then why were people fined for travelling to get childcare?

Because not many people were playing a part in making decisions that affect millions of people's lives.

Whether you like him or not, whether you approve of his position or not, the fact is, he is an aide to the PM and the PM was very ill - I don't blame him for doing what he did in his situation.

borntobequiet · 27/05/2020 07:04

The story spun in that press conference was such an obvious concoction of nonsense and lies that it’s astonishing that he is given any credibility at all. His apologists are either stupid, deluded or have political reasons for defending him.

Trevsadick · 27/05/2020 07:18

He went for a drive the day before going home, as his wife suggested, because he hadn't been well and she wanted to see if he felt up to the long drive home. Lots of people would have done the same thing.

He said himself, that it was his eyes.

No one, who has suddenly developed eye sight issues should be driving.

And this just happened to be on her birthday?

CherryPavlova · 27/05/2020 07:25

David Williams was more convincing as an MP on little Britain.

They are hoping people will move on.

DramaDromedary · 27/05/2020 07:31

Yeah, it is wrong. But cry me a fucking river. Cummings, with his Brexit sloganeering, was the one who created this society, the one that’s so divided and hate-filled that people now think it’s ok to heckle public figures in the street, and surround their house. And by making his child the centre of this story (and others, written by his wife), HE is the one who is exposing the child. I just didn’t expect Cummings to be hoisted by his own petard so SOON.

Stellaris22 · 27/05/2020 07:44

We absolutely should not just be moving on and forgetting this happened. It's what they want, for it to blow over and not suffer any consequences.

We are allowed to be angry about this and it's disgusting to tell anyone to just ignore this. He needs to be held to account and resign. The worst thing the public can do is ignore this and allow this blatant elitism to continue.

Trevsadick · 27/05/2020 07:45

He didn't use his parents as childcare & it wasn't his intention to, if they had needed childcare. He made that very clear.

Is that right? I am sure at one point he said he went incase both him and his wife got very sick.

hopeishere · 27/05/2020 08:01

Agreed but it was his nieces that they were going to use. So splitting hairs.

He's very famously not a Tory. There was lots of outrage and then Calderwood resigned.

OP posts:
Trevsadick · 27/05/2020 08:47

There were loads of threads on the Scottish CMO. And lots of people saying that NS made a mistake, by not getting rid and trying to defend it.

The main difference is though, that she did leave.

MummyPop00 · 27/05/2020 09:08

The eyesight yarn I can actually believe. Because it would simply be too ridiculous to make up as a plausible excuse rather than ‘I still felt a bit breathless so went for a shorter test drive’. But of course, as a lot of people have concluded - if your eyesight is in anyway dodgy, you simply don’t drive.

His wife’s Spectator article was the clincher for me. No mention of isolating in Durham whatsoever = they knew how it would play with the public, so conveniently omitted that significant bit of the story.

He may have not broken the guidelines on paper, but he has violated the British sense of fair play.

As for the press pack - most of them outside his house should also be sacked for also setting a bad example on social distancing whilst being holier than thou. Similarly, anybody shouting abuse at him in the street should be prosecuted.

Also Emily Thornberry’s tweet needs to be investigated as possible incitement.

SquitMcJit · 27/05/2020 09:15

The press hounding excuse is pathetic.

They have both courted press attention when it has suited them. She is a journalist who has chosen to put her family out there by writing a (dubious) article about their experience of coronavirus - choosing to give details including her child’s name.

They’ve just been caught out.

SquitMcJit · 27/05/2020 09:19

I agree that we absolutely should not be moving on.

The government are about to ask the public to follow self-isolation instructions via an app. If they expect anyone to get behind this venture they cannot simultaneously undermine their entire self-isolation with symptoms message by protecting DC at all costs.

user1471448556 · 27/05/2020 09:31

We can ‘move on’ when he resigns. They’re literally reinterpreting the rules to save their mate. He is an unelected bureaucrat - he needs to go. If it turns out he was actually running the country because Johnson is too lazy/incompetent, it’s time for Johnson to step up and show all his doting fans they were right to vote for him.

InsanityRocks · 27/05/2020 10:22

Can’t believe the number of threads on this and all because he’s Tory.

Cummings is not a tory. He despises most of them. He is much more far right than most tories.

This really isn't about Tory vs Labour, it's about the 'elite' vs the general public. It's about fairness, integrity, compassion, respect. We are all being gaslighted on a massive scale. I urge you to find your anger.

LikeothersIamjustme · 27/05/2020 10:40

Can I leave my home if I'm self-isolating?
If you or someone you live with has symptoms of coronavirus:

do not leave your home for any reason – if you need food or medicine, order it online or by phone, or ask someone to deliver it to your home
do not have visitors in your home – including friends and family
do any exercise at home – you can use your garden, if you have one

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 27/05/2020 11:09

@savehalloween

"What he did wrong was travel with suspected coronavirus, when he should have been self isolating."
Did he though? He did not say he had symptoms. He travelled to the isolated cottage on his fathers estate because his wife was ill and in view of others around him falling ill with Covid (including Boris Johnson who tested positive on the evening that DC travelled) he feared he would develop symptoms and both he and his wife would become too ill to care for their child.

He stated he developed symptoms the next day.

MummyPop00 · 27/05/2020 11:23

Is he?

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 27/05/2020 11:37

@effingterrified

"Why was he driving around if he couldn't see properly? Given that's illegal and incredibly dangerous?"
He said his eyes had felt weird when he was ill. When he wanted to return to London after the 14 day isolation had passed, he was no longer ill. He said his wife suggested he checked that he was okay to drive that distance after being ill. It sounds to me as if she may be an anxious person (especially as she can apparently drive but didn't). I think I could envisage a situation where I might say that my DH ought to check he is okay to drive by doing a test drive locally after a serious illness, rather than embark on a long journey and discover he isn't up to it.

"Why did he go back to work at Downing Street AFTER going home to look after his sick wife, when the rules said he needed to isolate then for 14 days?"
The rules referred to Covid symptoms of a fever or a new continuous cough. He said she'd felt ill and had vomited and phoned him to come home. He stated she did not have a fever or cough. There was no reason to consider she had Covid. He then said that later "she felt better" so he returned to work.

"Why did he not ask his healthy niece to come down to him if he needed childcare, rather than risking everyone's health, including his own child's, by shoving him in a car with potentially infectious people for hours?"
He did not need childcare at this point but, in any event, his niece is 17 isn't she? Does she drive? Would she be able to drive a long distance to London? Was a person allowed to drive 250+ miles to provide childcare for someone else?

On the evening of 27th March, when he travelled to his father's estate, Boris Johnson told him he'd tested positive for Coronavirus. That probably changed quite a lot about his thoughts. He then considered he was likely to develop symptoms and, with his wife having not felt well with what he thought was an unconnected illness, he considered they may both become incapacitated by illness and unable to care for their son. As it was, they did not require childcare because his wife got better whilst he got worse. His wife was able to care for the son.

"Why did he drive to a busy, popular beauty spot, driving through the town to get there, whilst trying out his driving skills with dodgy eyes? How selfish and dangerous is that?"
His eyes were fine. A doctor said he was fit to return to work. He didn't drive to a beauty spot, per se. He test drove to satisfy his wife's request that he was able to drive safely. They stopped because his son needed a wee. The river actually runs for quite a long way so it just happens to be an area of beauty.

"Why did his wife lie and claim the son was well and they stayed in London the whole time?"
Did she do this? Can you provide a link with where she did this?

Mrhodgeymaheg · 27/05/2020 11:39

To those saying we should move on...

No, I won't. Other people in positions of authority have resigned over visiting second homes when they aren't even ill, so can't see how DC is any different. We also needed their expertise, so the arguement that he is important in the Covid-19 response is not a good enough excuse to not resign. It is purely because Boris Johnson can't think for himself without him. He has built his career through DC and will fall apart without him. They are hoping it will blow over and we all get fed up with it like everything else and he can carry on leading through someone else. I don't want that to happen. If Boris is even worse without this man propping him up, the country needs to see it. Maybe they won't be so easily duped with shit captions and false promises in the future. That can only be a good thing.

And if people counter argue this with the fact they thing things will fall apart due to a lack of input from DC, so it is not in our best interest, they need to ask themselves what party and 'leader' they were voting for in the first place.
