The DC scandal

What does everyone think? I wonder if his position is now untenable ..

He would not resign even if the United Kingdom literally collapsed around him.

Martysmarvellousmeals · 25/05/2020 09:30

No

The80sweregreat · 25/05/2020 09:32

No, it'll blow over especially as now it appears it was a safeguarding issue regarding his son.
We were not aware if this exception at the time of the many threads about this.
The public will forgive and forget now I suppose.
I won't , but that makes me look bad I suppose.
His child is the innocent one here.
Boris will cling on as people will go ' he didn't have any other options' and defend him.
Plus the press have also behaved appallingly too : crowding around his home. This behaviour doesn't help anyone.
That poor child of his : his the one i feel sorry for !
I bet it blows over.

No but seriously for the conservatives this is minor scandal and Boris is not the type to resign ever.

Ifailed · 25/05/2020 09:37

No. Far too many of his MPs have ducked down and kept quiet, not because they think Cummings was right, but purely for their own selfish reasons.

LemonyCupcake · 25/05/2020 09:38

I think if the tabloids manage to prove he went for his day trip out or the police decide to prosecute him , they both may have to go

Really hope so - this has made me absolutely loathe them

Of course not. We will move on. Boris has a 80 majority. Some are even talking about another election. As if anyone else would win!

Starmer is just a pursed lip complainer at present.

I don’t know whether he will go or stay but some people seem to think they know everything from what his sons medical issues are to how much petrol he had in his car.

AgeLikeWine · 25/05/2020 09:43

Not a chance. Johnson won the general election five months ago with a hugec majority, and many Tory MPs in the Midlands & North would not have won their seats under any other leader. They owe their careers to him.

In the past, the Tory party has brutally knifed leaders who have become electoral liabilities, but Johnson isn’t anywhere near that position.

The80sweregreat · 25/05/2020 09:43

Nobody is going anywhere.

Inoneminute · 25/05/2020 09:44

Not now no, but I think the tide has turned and the party will go for him before long. Especially if those other trips are proven. Unless the pair of them manage to turn it all round through a genius brexit deal Grin

Bathroom12345 · 25/05/2020 09:45

The lefties have taken over Mumsnet these days. I wonder if they are the same people with different user names.

ChippityDoDa · 25/05/2020 09:46

No. But people are getting fed up. Labour will clean up at the next election under Starmer. I’m not a labour voter but I’ll be tempted depending what their stance on small/medium businesses and self employment is.

Inoneminute · 25/05/2020 09:47

Bathroom, the Daily Mail agree with us this morning. Have they gone all lefty too?

DippyAvocado · 25/05/2020 09:48

He would not resign even if the United Kingdom literally collapsed around him.

This.

I disagree it will blow over. Regardless of speculation about his son, it was no more of a safeguarding issue for him than for many, many other families around the country who struggled on while maintaining the lockdown rules. DC actually had family members living within a couple of miles of him that he could have called on, which is more than many of the rest of us have.

Boris Johnson's words at the press conference have actually succeeded in making the situation worse, which is remarkable even for him.

He will survive as PM because nobody else wants the responsibility of Brexit + pandemic. Hopefully it will damage his credibility long-term (although to many of us it was baffling that he had any credibility to start with, so maybe not). IMO the most likely scenario is that he will not be forced out but he will step down at some point before the end of his term. He signed up for the adulation of the Brexiters, not for all this hard work. It's possible he may have longer-term health effects which would give him an excuse.

Youngatheart00 · 25/05/2020 09:51

It’s nothing to do with being a ‘leftie’. I’m certainly not but I’m still appalled and disgusted by the lying, arrogance and institutional cover up. Sometimes these things do bring governments down (think Watergate) but it’s rare. I think BoJo will have a tough job getting everybody back bought in to his rules though.

user1493494961 · 25/05/2020 09:51

No, keep dreaming.

testing987654321 · 25/05/2020 09:52

No, not yet. I do think they will find it an annoying problem to shake off though, as there are still so many questions.

I think it's a bit like the owner Ratners jewellers who called his own products "crap". He effectively insulted his customers taste and sales slumped, causing lasting damage.

Boris has equally insulted the electorate by asking them to follow rules then lying about those same rules to defend Cummings. I can't imagine many will forgive or forget that easily.

Inoneminute · 25/05/2020 09:53

We'll find out how important the rules were now, when so many people stop following them becuas of this. If that leads to an even higher death rate, I know he'll argue that it was because "we" didn't do as we were told but I don't think he'll get away with that now. But no, not going anywhere this week.

Fontofallknowledge2 · 25/05/2020 10:01

I am genuinely gob-smacked at those defending DC and furious when callers to LBC radio station say "the public don't care" I do care, and feel that DC is using the childcare issue as an excuse he thought up when he found out the story was going to be published.
Government advice was very clear. If you are displaying symptoms STAY AT HOME. I think it is the height of selfishness to be in that position and then undertake a 260 mile journey to another part of the country on the relatively small chance both parents would be too incapacitated to look after their child.

Pertella · 25/05/2020 10:01

There will be another 'scandal' soon to distract the public from this.

Medievalist · 25/05/2020 10:01

No, it'll blow over especially as now it appears it was a safeguarding issue regarding his son.

We're told it was a safeguarding issue but nobody has explained satisfactorily why it was a safeguarding issue for DC but not for the thousands of other parents who have had to look after children whilst struggling with the virus. "Do as I say not as I do" does not sit well with most people.

Of course he won't resign.

tempestterra · 25/05/2020 10:02

Boris? resign? 😂😂😂😂😂
