Do these shenanigans make you less likely to download the NHS app?

I already had my reservations about installing an app produced by Dom’s former Vote Leave mates, but this disgraceful behaviour seems to have cemented that. Low installation rates of the app is certainly way to revolt against this shit show.

Alternatively, when the phone operator rings up to say that one of your work colleagues has tested positive, you need to go into unpaid isolation, I think we’ll tell them to fuck off. Or just go to Durham.

I won't be installing it, there is no way I'd trust a government to keep my data safe.

Mintjulia · 25/05/2020 04:09

No, not in the slightest. What an illogical reaction.

What one badly dressed man did is irrelevant to the use of an app that will help us all return to normal.

rosie1959 · 25/05/2020 04:28

Revolting against something that is intended to keep people safe just because one man took his family to a different location. No sorry that does not make any sense at all
If this app saves just one life is it not worth it
As far as I am aware the phone saves the data it is not transmitted anywhere
What is so exciting on my phone than anyone would be interested in

Redolent · 25/05/2020 04:31

From a top modeller who advises SAGE:

“ I spent this weekend refining our contact tracing analysis. One of the things that’s always stood out is that for these targeted measures to work, we need public adherence to isolation/quarantine to be very high. But I fear it’s now going to be far more difficult to achieve this.”

The fact that the app has been developed by Cummings pals who so abused our data in the referendum makes me nervous. His utter disdain for the general population is clear to see.

Humphriescushion · 25/05/2020 05:04

Yes it does. The gaslighting done by this government is awful. I would not be sure my details were safe and if they werent the goverrnment would twist things to say that was "reasonable and legal" or some such shit.

twinnywinny14 · 25/05/2020 06:18

I think the government have got a challenge earning the trust of the British public back after this. It was already slipping away but now people are not interested in what the elitist government have got to say or request. One rule for them and one for us, that’s the problem now

georgedawes · 25/05/2020 06:21

Yes definitely. They lie blatantly so when they say the app is safe and won't steal data..who knows if that is also a lie.

BillywilliamV · 25/05/2020 06:29

So if they were keeping tabs on everyone? Do you know how much data would be coming in? How much processing power to store it, how much processing power to mine it for anything remotely useful about any individual? Even supposing it had been secretly designed to have th at sort of functionality anyway.
Having worked with some very complex software applications in the past, I will be pleasantly surprised if it does what they are saying it ought to do. I think a whole layer of functionality working underneath, at the same time is extremely unlikely.

knittingaddict · 25/05/2020 08:37

I would have used it before all this, but I'm leaning towards not using it now. My husband said that he won't be installing it, but he is generally wary of putting any of his info out there. He could be right on this.

knittingaddict · 25/05/2020 08:38

Also, I think they are so incompetent that it probably won't work as intended anyway. I predict a hot mess.

DamitJanet · 25/05/2020 08:40

I’ll still use it. So, so angry about the whole Cummings debacle, but it doesn’t impact my decision on this.

whatnametopick · 25/05/2020 08:41

As Cummings and his cronies are linked to it and apparently have no accountability for anything, I shan't be downloading the app.

Irnbroothenoo · 25/05/2020 08:44

People who won’t download the app because of this are pathetic

milveycrohn · 25/05/2020 08:49

I don't have a problem downloading the app.
However, I think we all know that it won't work anyway.
The concept behind it is a bit ludicrous.
I get the idea; Bluetooth to ascertain others you have been close to. But this is supposed to be rolled out as lockdown rules eased. Pictures show that the underground is already crowded, so that is going to be huge.
My intention will be to download the app, I can always delete it later

effingterrified · 25/05/2020 09:38

I would never download an app that basically hands all our private data to Cummings and his backers.

I would download a genuinely independent app. That's not what this is. Privacy experts have all slated it. It doesn't even work on old phones. It's a rubbish app that won't achieve its claimed effects but will siphon off your most personal health data to benefit fuck knows who.

ThePlantsitter · 25/05/2020 09:40

I won't. Call me pathetic if you like. I think you're thick if you trust this government with anything and this Cummings thing has cemented my decision.

effingterrified · 25/05/2020 09:41

My dh was advising a company who was saying they were going to get all their workers to download the app. My dh pointed out that as in this industry, workers are not allowed to have phones with them as they work so all phones are stored together in a cupboard during the working day, it would automatically mean that if any one person in the company showed symptoms, all 600 people in the company would be required to self-isolate for 2 weeks! Every single time. Grin

It is such a shite idea.

Irnbroothenoo · 25/05/2020 09:42

They ask for the first part of your postcode. That’s it

ThePlantsitter · 25/05/2020 09:44

It doesn't matter what they ask for if they have access to the phone's connection data.

Slurpy · 25/05/2020 09:46

This hasn't changed my mind. There was no way in hell I was ever going to hand my data to Vote Leave cronies anyway. We know that they've abused data in the past. The appointment of Dido Harding to lead the app did nothing to improve my chances of compliance. She presided over the enormous TalkTalk data breach.
I'd be quite happy to download an Android/Apple app for the same purpose, but not for these villians. No way.

Trevsadick · 25/05/2020 09:50

I was on the fence before. I still am. But more on the side of no.

If you cant trust the people involved in creating it, why would you?

Why would you trust a government who twists a situation to make it fit the law. While fining people for doing the same thing?

My aunt got a visit from the police because my mum went round to lift her off the floor. She wasnr fined but given a 'friendly warning' Not an apology for bothering her, when what she did was within the rules.

When a government is happy to see normal people fined, but their own do as they please......do you really think they give a shit about normal peoples personal data?

Miriel · 25/05/2020 10:02

I wasn't going to download it anyway, but if the Cummings situation has made a few more people see that the government shouldn't be trusted with their data, I'm glad.

About the app:

"It’s important to also note that the NHS COVID-19 app includes the permissions “ACCESSCOARSELOCATION” and “ACCESSFINELOCATION.” And while they aren’t being utilised right now, the NHS has already stated that “a system of monitoring location data” could be introduced soon. This would allow them to track individual users’ specific movements via GPS." (Source: sonin.agency/nhs-covid-19-coronavirus-tracing-app/ )

If they did this, they'd say that those who downloaded it already gave permission for their specific location to be tracked, by accepting those terms and conditions which included those permissions. If you think this isn't possible, listen to Boris declaring that Cumming's actions were what 'any good parent' would have done, and that he was 'stopping the spread of the virus' by travelling around while infected.

Smileyoriley · 25/05/2020 10:35

No way will I be downloading it now for all the reasons already stated, plus I don't think they could organise a piss up in a brewery so it will be pointless.

FoolsAssassin · 25/05/2020 10:41

I don’t know. I am for the concept as can see that as part of an overall package along with social distancing etc it could make a difference.

But time and time again I have seen Johnson and Cummings lie. I thought maybe after Johnson was so ill he may have turned over a new leaf but it is clear he hasn’t and I don’t trust them to keep my family or data safe. Actually I don’t trust them on anything.

Guess I will have to make a call but I shall be watching their behaviour very closely before making a decision.
