Diabetes and risk

I’m trying to find some evidence/articles about the increased risks of coronavirus when they have diabetes. I have had a look at various publications but can’t quite find the data I am looking for. My MIL is 72 and has type 2 diabetes. She is not obese and is fairly healthy. She told my husband last night that she believes she has a 1 in 4 chance of dying if she gets coronavirus. I am pretty sure that is incorrect as these odds are way to high. I think she has read that 1 in 4 people who die with coronavirus have diabetes, which I believe is not the same thing. I would really like to be able to point her to some data that shows what her risk actually might be. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

What you want to know is
of all the people with T2D,

1. how many manage c19 illness at home
2. how many go to hospital
3. how many to critical care... how many die.

Only the last one (3) is available. And it isn't age adjusted, you really want to know about women age ~72 with no other conditions.

My guess is the vast majority manage at home. I'm sorry it's only a guess.

I heard a few days ago from a doctor on Twitter that 25% of deaths in ICU have diabetes.

What they didn't say was whether they had any other co-morbidities.

Obviously this is a far cry from 25% of people who are infected.

Sorry I can't be more specific, but hopefully this is reassuring. It's quite possible this was the route of her misunderstanding.

There was a report submitted this week about diabetes and covid.

Partha Kar is a Dr who helped put together the data. He is on Facebook and posts the findings.

It's 33% of ICU deaths that were Diabetic.

Type 2 Diabetics 2 times more likely to die with Covid.
Type 1 Diabetics 3.5 times more likely. This is compared to those without diabetes.

Thanks for all your replies. I’ve had a look on diabetes uk for information but it’s still not giving me a new figure to suggest to the MIL. The only example I can say so far is that it’s not correct to interpret that 25% (or 33%) of people who died have diabetes is the same as saying you have a 25% (or 33%) of dying from it. Twisting it like that is like saying if 10% of people who died were under 40, then under 40s have a 10% chance of dying (which they clearly don’t). So I guess what I’m looking for is something telling me (or a statistical analysis), that of all the over 70s diabetics who have had coronavirus, how many have died? Even just, of all the diabetics that have had coronavirus, how many have died? Information is a powerful thing, and I’d really like her to not believe she has a 25% chance of dying if she catches it.

We have no idea yet how many diabetics have had it but managed at home. So there are no figures to find.

My son is type 1 and stayed out of hospital thanks to multiple daily calls from his DSN. Because he wasn't admitted he had no official test.
