DS statement on Cummings is shameful

Basically I am sceptical about how terrible this could be to get for all of us - the mild illness stuff has been dropped as not helpful to the general lock us all up thing.

Regardless as a law abiding person I've stuck to the rules.

Which I thought meant you had to self isolate if you had symptoms and no, you couldn't go somewhere easier. If you had kids you all stayed in together, relied on deliveries or the local council support schemes and 111 if it was bad.

So I'm sickened by the knot tying in getting Cummings off the hook.

Still think nothing will happen. A fake resignation at most.

PissOffStayAtHomeDogMum · 23/05/2020 22:03

@detachablehoof Sorry - I didn't mean to get at you personally, so I am sorry if it came across that way.

I just mean that I have ignored the lockdown as a private individual, but would have felt that I couldn't have ignored it, if I had been in the government's inner circle. Especially not if I had been telling other people to stick to it.

IRL, I have just been fed up with my teenagers for refusing to break the lockdown full stop, when I have been setting them an example of 'using common sense', 'thinking for myself', 'assessing sensible risk', etc!

chopc · 23/05/2020 22:04

Apart from the original trip if he was truly found in Durham on 19th April (this was a different trip as he would have been out of isolation by then) for any reason other than that allowed by the lockdown rules, of course he should resign

However a huge problem with this coronavirus lockdown debacle is that each individual believes they are following the rules even when they are not.

Plus the rules are for their own good. Eg over 70's are told to take extra care for their own good. Keep 2m away to minimise your chance of catching it. It's not just for others benefits, it's for your own

So irrespective of what others do or don't do, I will continue to maintain my distance where possible (the nature of my job means I have to come into close contact with others). This is for my benefit as well as that of my family and society. What don't people understand about that?

ListeningQuietly · 23/05/2020 22:06

detachablehoof
honestly I don't see what else he should have done in the circumstances
other than get her brother to drop stuff off from Holland Park
or his PA to drop stuff off from round the corner
or NOT drive up and down the country with a 4 year old Hello Moto

or even DO WHAT THE REST OF US DID
suck it up as this is a pandemic

janet1267 · 23/05/2020 22:06

I've emailed my Tory MP who i think is actually a good constituency MP but totally in thrall to Boris Johnson. I've made my views pretty clear. I've never been so angry at political behaviour as I am today. I've lost my livelihood and these arrogant bastards are pissing around like it's all a joke.

itsgettingweird · 23/05/2020 22:08

Detachable what do you mean what else could he have done? Well the same as the rest of us and followed the rules (he was involved in setting) for a start.

And he didn't just travel in an emergency. He travelled frequently. There's actually no defence to that. He didn't visit a castle for safeguarding purposes.

PissOffStayAtHomeDogMum · 23/05/2020 22:09

@chopc I understand this perfectly well. However, I have chosen not to stick to it despite understanding this. I have done so because as my job has been torpedoed by lockdown, and I now have no income, there is no sodding way I'm not seeing my partner too.

I haven't moved him into my house because that's not right for my children (the government blithely suggested that people combine households if they don't normally live together). My children's needs come above my desire to live with my partner and his desire to live with me. However, my desire to see him, when we are all fit and healthy and are not seeing anyone else, outweighs any decrees from the government about whom I can see, and when.

So I don't believe I'm following the rules. I believe I'm not following the rules. DC wasn't following them, either. But his failure to follow them is more significant than mine, as his job involved telling other people what to do. Whereas nobody gives a toss what I do.

ListeningQuietly · 23/05/2020 22:10

Janet
Well done.
More of us should get into the habit of emailing our MPs rather than sharing FB posts and clicking online petitions.
they work for us
remind them that EVERY DAY

Seems to be a possibility that one of his trips coincided with his mother's birthday party. I think the Government have underestimated the response to this, although it is slightly funny that the newspapers let the Government tie themselves up in knots before saying it wasn't the only time he went up!

Tomorrow should be interesting. What fridge can Boris put himself in before the next PMQ, I wonder. I've just checked my MP's twitter, no support there so far (and he wasn't slow to stick the knife into Theresa May)

KenDodd · 23/05/2020 22:11

I am enjoying the memes though. My favourite so far.

"You can't expect Boris Johnson to sack Cummings, that's like telling Emu to sack Rod Hull"

stopcock · 23/05/2020 22:11

Sorry, should have said I got that from the Guardian Live feed.

GrimmsFairytales · 23/05/2020 22:12

stopcock

Absolutely shocking. Angry

Mittens030869 · 23/05/2020 22:12

The strange thing is that his mother's birthday party hasn't been mentioned on the BBC news at all unless I missed that?

MaxNormal · 23/05/2020 22:14

stopcock fuck me! The contempt they hold us in...

Rupertpenrysmistress · 23/05/2020 22:15

This breaks my heart. I am a nurse and have spent my last few shifts supporting dying patient's who are unable able to have their relatives with them. This is due to hospital visits being restricted. This man has no respect for the rules and the implications for the wider public.

I am so angry with this government. DC is so arrogant and unpleasant.

Miljea · 23/05/2020 22:17

Yes, email your MP.

That's important. Of course they have junior aides monitoring what we say.

But email your MP.

stopcock · 23/05/2020 22:18

I am appalled by the response but sadly not surprised.

Yes but what can we do? Nothing. Write to our MP, so what, ignore. Criticism in the press, the right wing press will come running to their side again soon, maybe they'll find out Kier Starmer got another field somewhere for Tory voters to get agitated about.

ListeningQuietly · 23/05/2020 22:20

If EVERYBODY (and their mates) on these threads emailed their MPs
it would have an impact.
I talk to my MP and the ratio is something they are VERY aware of
20 new emailers bites
40 is worrying
100 and they shit themselves
JUST DO IT

Clavinova · 23/05/2020 22:20

Looks like no 10 have decided the case is closed!

In that case the witness who claims they saw DC on the 19th April might have to reveal themselves;

"The second eyewitness, who declined to be named, said: “We were shocked and surprised to see him because the last time we did was earlier in the week in Downing Street.”

FliesandPies · 23/05/2020 22:23

chomalungma where have the Mail got that quote of Johnson's from?

itsgettingweird · 23/05/2020 22:23

Listening what's the email address for mps? Is it a name @ type?
