DS statement on Cummings is shameful

SouthWestmom · 23/05/2020 10:44

Basically I am sceptical about how terrible this could be to get for all of us - the mild illness stuff has been dropped as not helpful to the general lock us all up thing.

Regardless as a law abiding person I've stuck to the rules.

Which I thought meant you had to self isolate if you had symptoms and no, you couldn't go somewhere easier. If you had kids you all stayed in together, relied on deliveries or the local council support schemes and 111 if it was bad.

So I'm sickened by the knot tying in getting Cummings off the hook.

Excellent. ,at be we need to come up with an email we all send.

Including a question such as "how are you now going to persuade your constituents that following the science and lockdown rules is necessary. Because surely we can all now do what we thinks best regardless as informed by Grant Shapps on corona virus daily briefing dated 22/5/20"

GrimmsFairytales · 23/05/2020 21:41

I don't see what he has done wrong.

I think you might have missed tonight's update about additional trips.

MaxNormal · 23/05/2020 21:41

chopc you may want to read the latest developments.

Doryhunky · 23/05/2020 21:41

Lone parent here. When I had covid symptoms I stayed home, looked after my children alone and relied on deliveries. If I had had to go into hospital then I presume I would have been allowed to have a family member come look after them but until that point I would and did just stay home

detachablehoof · 23/05/2020 21:41

I've never met the guy and don't know much about him, but honestly what do people think he was supposed to do?! Him and his wife both ill and needing childcare for their toddler. I know what I would have done in those circumstances.

I think the debate around this is totally politicised. The people who are crying foul are probably also the ones who are proclaiming they are meeting family because they don't believe in lockdown any more

PissOffStayAtHomeDogMum · 23/05/2020 21:42

@itsgettingweird That's a very kind message. Thank you.

The fact is: DC, whether you like him or not, and whether you personally know him or not, was representing a particular point of view. It is part of his job to represent that.

So the fact that he hasn't done so speaks volumes about him.

He could have said he couldn't continue to represent a position which was inimical to him. But he didn't. He chose to represent a policy which has inflicted untold unhappiness on hundreds of thousands of people (who are more compliant than I am), whilst essentially laughing in their faces and doing whatever suits him.

It is truly disgusting.

I defected from the Conservative party at the last election (due to Brexit) for the first time in 20 years, and DC has merely reinforced my decision.

itsgettingweird · 23/05/2020 21:42

I don't see what he's done wrong? Well open your eyes and ears then. He broke lockdown rules. Then defended it. Got sensor ministers to all defend him.
Oh hang on.... he didn't just break lockdown rules for safeguarding (original defence). He broke them repeatedly for reason they haven't yet found an excuse for!

ballsdeep · 23/05/2020 21:43

@chopc
He was there on a few occasions. And are you telling me he didn't stop for petrol, toilet break etc? We were told time and time again to stay indoors. If we, or any members of our household show symptoms, we are to isolate. What makes him so special that he can travel from a hot spot of covid 19, drive half way across the country to see his parents? When millions of people have struggled with childcare, panicked about being ill, fought to homes chool their children and work from home and he does what he fudge he likes. Disgusting

downtheplug · 23/05/2020 21:43

@chopc are you serious?

Her brother lived in London and could have helped out.

Instead he drove to his parents and sister (they all live in a row of farmhouses and very close to each other) and potentially risked the health of them, his nieces and other extended family members.

Because he is a *!#%.

Nick Baines, the bishop of Leeds, told the Observer

The Bishop of Leeds is clearly not a fan -

Rowanapp · 23/05/2020 21:44

I’m another one who had covid, as did my husband and we stayed at home for 2 weeks with our kids who are younger than DC’s. It was utterly miserable and everyone struggled. I have local family who are not vulnerable and would have helped but felt we should do our utmost not to spread the virus so they dropped off food and supplies but didn’t enter our house. If we had both had to be in hospital then obviously we would have had to get someone to care for the kids but are you really suggesting DC didn’t have anyone in London at all who could have cared for his 4 year old in that eventuality? It’s totally indefensible and he has to go. Disgusted the government are trying to back him and he hasn’t even apologised.

MaxNormal · 23/05/2020 21:44

detachablehoof and again... please keep up with the latest updates on this. It's way beyond one trip up due to sickness. The Tory party have massively embarrassed themselves defending him today.

PissOffStayAtHomeDogMum · 23/05/2020 21:44

@detachablehoof Can you really not see the problem? I'd have done the same as DC in a heartbeat. I have broken the lockdown every single day since it was announced, because common sense and my need to do other things trumps the stupid lockdown.

However: I am not involved in the government. Can you really, honestly, not see why this makes a difference?

GrimmsFairytales · 23/05/2020 21:45

Him and his wife both ill and needing childcare for their toddler.

Bullshit. Anyone who is able to drive 260 miles, is more than well enough to look after a 4 year old.

Further lockdown breaches for those who missed it www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/may/23/new-witnesses-cast-doubt-on-dominic-cummingss-lockdown-claims

itsgettingweird · 23/05/2020 21:46

I've just had a lovely thought. Surely now the police has been shafted they'll be compliant (by that I mean bloody gagging and willing to in providing cctv of him travelling on all the days he did?

Or does that break data security? Can any of this be requested through FOI?

SouthWestmom · 23/05/2020 21:48

I just think that if they are all following rules they have set for themselves based on whatever superior knowledge they have, we should all be trusted to do the same.

It's the deceit, the articles to defraud, the play in heart strings and the sheer hypocrisy. Same with Ferguson. If they knew having recovered meant you were immune and could catch up for a shag, why not let everyone else know?

The tory bots are coming out in force now aren't they? CCHQ must know it's bad.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 23/05/2020 21:53

why should anyone pay any attention to what the govt says anymore? I mean, forget the guidance, just do whatever you think is the right thing to look after your family.

merrymouse · 23/05/2020 21:57

If they got in their own car to travel elsewhere to isolate so that they can be supported and can access support for their child should either of them become too ill, I don't think that broke the rules

Except it did break the rules, because people were clearly told to STAY AT HOME. The guidance was not 'if you suspect you have Covid 19, go to another household incase you need help'. The rules mentioned travelling to give care, not travelling with symptoms to receive care.

And even then, it seems that they did not self isolate and made more than one trip to Durham.

SouthWestmom · 23/05/2020 21:57

Good tweet. Only 12/24 cabinet ministers complied apparently

detachablehoof · 23/05/2020 21:59

@PissOffStayAtHomeDogMum I agree that it isn't great optics but honestly I don't see what else he should have done in the circumstances

Nothing else to talk about is there Grin everyone is glad of some scandal

KenDodd · 23/05/2020 22:00

why should anyone pay any attention to what the govt says anymore?
Boris and co have been shit on covid, as demonstrated by our high number of infections and deaths. I had heard of people trying to do there own contact tracing because the Gov was so shit

SouthWestmom · 23/05/2020 22:01

Well as we were all told it was a mild illness for most people perhaps he could have waited to see if both of them were getting too ill to function with a back up plan of the local relative to step in?
