DS statement on Cummings is shameful

Basically I am sceptical about how terrible this could be to get for all of us - the mild illness stuff has been dropped as not helpful to the general lock us all up thing.

Regardless as a law abiding person I've stuck to the rules.

Which I thought meant you had to self isolate if you had symptoms and no, you couldn't go somewhere easier. If you had kids you all stayed in together, relied on deliveries or the local council support schemes and 111 if it was bad.

So I'm sickened by the knot tying in getting Cummings off the hook.

@MaxNormal - so you dislike him because of Brexit Hmm and this just makes you dislike him even more.

Where is the 4yr old child in all of this?

GetOffYourHighHorse · 23/05/2020 17:47

'You've just proven my very point. You don't like his politics, you don't agree with his politics, you don't like Brexit either. That's my point!!'

Yes and everyone shouting about it on twitter all strangely don't like his politics too.

I think like Ferguson and Calderwood he's been an utter fool. Of course the welfare of a 4yr old is paramount and if they were self isolating in another property the risk is minimal but fgs it was bound to come out.

Why has he taken such a monumental risk and given people like Piers Morgan and that awful Ian Blackford bloke any ammunition?

FliesandPies · 23/05/2020 17:48

Why even bring up the fact that you hate him anyway or think he's a twat?

Um, I didn't - you did. It's not his politics I dislike - I don't actually know what they are.

I said he fucked up our politics, ie by encouraging lying, conniving, contempt for parliament, centralising all power at No.10, by his disdain for any scrutiny on him and his influence. That's only skimming the surface.

Face it, you don't give a shit about debate and anyway there's no debate to be had here. Not on the Gov side which will 'strain every sinew' to defend him. Or the side of right which knows a big pile of bullshit when they smell it.

MaxNormal · 23/05/2020 17:48

Yes, primarily Brexit, which is valid enough reason. The various bullying allegations don't really help though.

I don't really care about his child one way or another.

DagenhamRoundhouse · 23/05/2020 17:51

He gives me the complete creeps. I can only think his 'popularity' is down to knowing where the bodies are buried.

ListeningQuietly · 23/05/2020 17:51

VenusTiger
You know those signs on the motorway about don't drive tired
they are there for a reason.
Cummings wife was ill
He thought he was ill
so instead of staying safe at home and getting his PA and her brother to bring them stuff
they got in a car and drove 4 hours while ill
That is a stupid thing to do, COVID or no COVID

GrimmsFairytales · 23/05/2020 17:52

are there any of us here who would make this choice that DC made in his position?

There are plenty who have been in a similar position. Ill with suspected or confirmed Coronavirus. However, they haven't traveled 260 miles to another house, or had other family members in to care for their children. They have struggled on, despite being ill as the guidance made it clear you should stay home and self isolate.

derxa · 23/05/2020 17:52

derxa I don't understand why you're so keen to defend Cummings? If he has his way over Brexit, which looks likely he'll be the author of substantial misery to the farming community. I don't particularly like DC but he's a human being like all of us.
Maybe he has one of the awful MN SILs who didn't want to help. Grin
As for the farming community we're marching on as ever. We've had a great lambing. Brexit? I didn't vote for it. Who knows what will happen with it. I've got bigger worries of my own to contend with.

lyralalala · 23/05/2020 17:55

are there any of us here who would make this choice that DC made in his position?

I know several people who've been in his position and no-one has made the choice he made.

I know one person, a single parent, who had her sister-in-law drive to her house and collect her child because they all felt she was going to end up in hospital. They were very nervous about the fact they were breaking the rules.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 23/05/2020 17:55

'Um, I didn't - you did. It's not his politics I dislike - I don't actually know what they are. I said he fucked up our politics,'

It's not his politics you dislike but he fucked up our politics? Confused

This whole crisis has just magnified political division, people using it to point score constantly. For example Nicola sturgeon announcing her own way forward with face masks one week then whining when Johnson did something different himself the next.

It's a shame that a press conference was taken up with a load of journalists asking the same question over and over. It needed clarification, one question would've sufficed.

TakemetoGreeceplease · 23/05/2020 17:56

Where is the 4yr old child in all of this?

If this was really about a child's welfare they would have had someone come and get the child, not stick them in a tiny enclosed space with a covid positive parent for several hours Hmm

FliesandPies · 23/05/2020 17:57

Where is the 4yr old child in all of this?

Oh do me a favour Hmm

What about everyone else's children? All those people, including on MN, who have struggled through while ill with CV while looking after their children, not able to ask for help or drive them to relatives as it was AGAINST the regulations. All those parents who have disabilities or chronic illness and usually have help with dc but unable to do so during lockdown.

ChickenNuggetsChipsAndBeans · 23/05/2020 18:03

VenusTiger - your son's friend's mum's alleged behaviour who just happened to work for the NHS will not make millions of people in the UK think, fuckit, the rules are optional, I am going to stay with my parents too. DC's behaviour will.

With regards to - well think about the 4 year old. Most of the UK population have spent weeks and months worrying about our children, parents, partners and friends. Most of us have managed to stay within the rules.

VenusTiger · 23/05/2020 18:03

face it you don't give a shit about debate Hmm what?

Provision was made for transporting children who were categorised as vulnerable, therefore taking children to childcare is “necessary.” Was the journey necessary?

Pps saying he could have put his child into care utilising services available, but I do not know any parent who would choose to do this rather than with a well known grandparent. Although MN has made me realise otherwise it seems. DC's parents live in Durham, should he be punished for that, is that his fault?

Pps are losing their shit with this because they don’t like Cummings, and because they see it as a route of attacking Boris and the govt over the Covid crisis response.

FliesandPies · 23/05/2020 18:03

Oh sorry GetOffYourHighHorse do you have problems reading? I'll put it in bold for you lovey -

I said he fucked up our politics, ie by encouraging lying, conniving, contempt for parliament, centralising all power at No.10, by his disdain for any scrutiny on him and his influence.

Quillink · 23/05/2020 18:03

Anyone well enough to drive 250 miles is well enough to look after a 4 year old.

VenusTiger · 23/05/2020 18:06

@FliesandPies @ChickenNuggetsChipsAndBeans I'm simply asking what you would do, I've an only child 6yrs with NO family either side nearby - who knows where this virus would take you if you both became I'll.

FliesandPies · 23/05/2020 18:06

Pps are losing their shit with this because they don’t like Cummings

And again, the reason they don't like him is exactly illustrated by the behaviour in question - taking his child, and the virus, on an unnecessary and irresponsible trip to stay with the highest risk group in terms of CV.

VenusTiger · 23/05/2020 18:06

*ill

VenusTiger · 23/05/2020 18:07

@FliesandPies according to Dr H it was necessary actually

Notonthestairs · 23/05/2020 18:07

He travelled with an adult diagnosed with CV19 and presumably he was starting to exhibit symptoms as otherwise why was he worried about childcare. They literally took CV19 to another part of the country.

We were all told to stay at home and isolate - not get in your car and drive.

Experimenopause · 23/05/2020 18:08

That statement from No.10 is the biggest pile of shite they have issued in a while and that is saying something.

VenusTiger · 23/05/2020 18:08

@Quillink do you have a crystal ball? How do you know how the virus will effect you weeks after showing symptoms? Hmm

FliesandPies · 23/05/2020 18:09

What would I do? I do what we had all been advised to do - isolate at home with my child and any other members of the household. If I and my partner became too ill to remain at home I would expect a member of our family to come down and look after my child (as allowed under the rules)

Experimenopause · 23/05/2020 18:10

Let’s wait for a hefty fine and a resignation with proper apology.
