DS statement on Cummings is shameful

Basically I am sceptical about how terrible this could be to get for all of us - the mild illness stuff has been dropped as not helpful to the general lock us all up thing.

Regardless as a law abiding person I've stuck to the rules.

Which I thought meant you had to self isolate if you had symptoms and no, you couldn't go somewhere easier. If you had kids you all stayed in together, relied on deliveries or the local council support schemes and 111 if it was bad.

So I'm sickened by the knot tying in getting Cummings off the hook.

DS = Downing Street
DC = Dominic Cummings

SouthWestmom · 23/05/2020 16:01

Briefing starting. Wheeled out Jenny Harries

@Noeuf it's everyone's nastiness on this thread that's tiring, I wouldn't want to leave my 6yr old in anyone else's care other than my parents if I didn't know how the virus was going to effect me or DH, he's an only child and we have NO family nearby - DH's family are in Ireland or down south coast - my parents would INSIST on it and yet, DC stayed in a building on the estate.

SouthWestmom · 23/05/2020 16:01

Can't believe it's 4pm. I've been binge watching Life on Mars since 9am Blush

Sorry just worked out D'S is Downing street

GrimmsFairytales · 23/05/2020 16:02

Briefing starting.

Here comes more deflection and defending.

Clavinova · 23/05/2020 16:02

Do you think Mary Wakefield (Dominic's wife) was right to write a completely fictitious spectator column about their time in Lockdown in London?

She certainly implies they were in London - a bit ambiguous though. Does DC read his wife's articles before they are published? Probably not.

Are you honestly suggesting that Chinese people in Manchester were infectious because of being "twinned" with Wuhan?

I wouldn't have travelled from London to Manchester just for a photo opportunity with the Chinese community when people had been flying back from China into Manchester Airport at that time, fleeing coronavirus - but that's just me.

Cam77 · 23/05/2020 16:04

That reporter with his "how it looks" question was an idiot though. Handed him an excuse on a plate. Correct its not about how it looks, its about breaking your own rules and being an utter hypocrite.

SouthWestmom · 23/05/2020 16:04

It's the hypocrisy and secrecy that does it. If they had been clearer - if you've had it you're ok to see people (SAGE bloke) if you're short on child care (aka Cummings) or would prefer certain childcare do that - no one would be cross

But they didn't just did what they wanted and covered it up

Tbf Keir doesn't forget things after a week, so I hope he brings this up next time he does PMQ

I get the feeling KS doesn't forget things said decades ago. This maybe this governments undoing. Even without the quite clear fuck ups they don't even seem intent on hiding anymore.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 23/05/2020 16:06

The people doorstepping DC are mostly photographers rather than reporters.

The British-Chinese community is overwhelmingly Cantonese from Hong Kong, nowhere near Wuhan and with far lower infection levels.

cuparfull · 23/05/2020 16:06

Bloody hypocrisy! Telling us all how to behave and then doing the exact opposite!
Driving a distance to a locality that may not have the ramped up facilities that he had in his local area. What if his car had broken down enroute, then he would have put the police/rescue services at risk too?

And then accusing the Police of lying, saying no family member had been interviewed regarding the transgression.Why would they?
I'm incandescent. And the arrogance of the man! Do as I say not as I do!

And where is BORIS??? Today Grant Shaps has to take the flak at the briefing. What a shower.

ListeningQuietly · 23/05/2020 16:06

Clavinova
Mary Wakefield has a brother who lives in Holland Park.
Why was it essential for the family to drive for four hours in the opposite direction ?

SouthWestmom · 23/05/2020 16:07

To be fair no one gives a fuck really at this waffle. I imagine he will deflect questions as not his field.

I reckon they’ve put Grant Shapps on because he is really boring and everyone will turn off before the questions about DC come in.

Clavinova · 23/05/2020 16:08

Mary Wakefield has a brother who lives in Holland Park.

The brother has a job and doesn't do childcare?

The80sweregreat · 23/05/2020 16:08

Grant Shapps is on tv now.
He looks quite relaxed , he knows it'll all be forgotten by next week I suppose.
Tories tend to get away with most things ..

SouthWestmom · 23/05/2020 16:08

And he's not been forced to tweet support. Interesting.

Could you imagine the MN posts?

AIBU - DH refuses to look after DC whilst I'm ill - wants to drive 300 miles to get his Mum to do it for him.

AIBU - DH is making us go to MIL's for her birthday. I'm sick, his boss is sick, at least 3 of his colleagues are sick. Why can't we stay at home?

AIBU - MIL and SIL refused to look after DC. DH is wearing the Dressing Gown of Doom and refusing to get out of bed, so I have to get up and deal with DC when I've been ill for days. WIBU to tell him to get over himself and parent our child himself?

AIBU - DH took to his bed a couple of days ago, saying he had Coronavirus, but is now dancing in the garden to ABBA. AIBU to think he was putting it on to get out of looking after DC?

AIBU - DH insisted we visit MIL for her birthday. I've just found out that he told his boss that we were self isolating, but DH was spotted mucking around in the garden by somebody who knows he should have been at work. He's told me that I have to lie and say he was terribly ill and not to mention where we were.

AIBU - The sodding knobhead is telling me that I have to tell a story of how ill he was and looked after me when all he did was lay in bed and watch Netflix whilst I did the hard work.

AIBU - the sodding knobhead DH told me to say we were at home isolating when all he actually wanted to do was have a holiday near his parents. He's been caught out on this, might lose his job over it and now says it's all my fault for saying the wrong things.

SouthWestmom · 23/05/2020 16:09

I think he is nervous. Blinking a lot. Dry voice. He knows the questions are coming and is trying to remember what he has been told to say.

@VenusTiger
You're trying to take the debate off on a tangent. A very poor attempt at spin. It's not about anonymous internet posters "niceness" or "nastiness". Its not about what the government rules "should" have been and whether those rules were too strict or too lenient. Its about whether Cummings broke the government's own rules. And he did. Most spectacularly. Therefore he should resign.

ListeningQuietly · 23/05/2020 16:09

The brother has a job and doesn't do childcare?
Oh yeah, silly me.
Its the 1950's again
only sisters do childcare, not brothers Hmm

VenusTiger · 23/05/2020 16:09

@Noeuf that's not my quote?
Anyway, yes, I think it wrong him travelling any distance whilst suffering from covid symptoms, BUT, why can't we debate your thread without the nasty and oh so transparent hate?

lilgreen · 23/05/2020 16:09

He’s an absolute twerp but what do you expect, he’s a Tory!
