DS statement on Cummings is shameful

Basically I am sceptical about how terrible this could be to get for all of us - the mild illness stuff has been dropped as not helpful to the general lock us all up thing.

Regardless as a law abiding person I've stuck to the rules.

Which I thought meant you had to self isolate if you had symptoms and no, you couldn't go somewhere easier. If you had kids you all stayed in together, relied on deliveries or the local council support schemes and 111 if it was bad.

So I'm sickened by the knot tying in getting Cummings off the hook.

Other people have managed

Some have called in family in when the situation was really bad most of us will not get that ill

I’ve prepared meals in the freezer so I don’t have to faff about cooking should I have become ill (single parent totally on my own risk at work)

We could have all chosen to do something just in case but we didn’t we stayed within the guidelines

I think he has to go the media will not let this go (rightly so) and it will be very damaging but he shall hang on as long as he can

I've been avoiding daily updates. Just tuned in now because today's actually will be interesting.
Sadly not for the right reasons.

Shapps has form as a brazen liar:

He denied having used a pseudonym after entering parliament and, in 2014, threatened legal action against a constituent who had stated on Facebook that he had. In February 2015 he told LBC Radio presenter Shelagh Fogarty, "Let me get this absolutely clear ... I don't have a second job and have never had a second job while being an MP. End of story."
However, in March 2015, Shapps admitted to having had a second job whilst being an MP, and practising business under a pseudonym.

Doesn't matter what he does, he could find a cure for the virus, people who hate him will carry on hating the "slimy bastard" what a pathetic debate this is.

redskittleorangeskittle · 23/05/2020 15:49

It seems odd that the one of the most influential men in the UK literally had no-one to ask for help within a 250 mile radius.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 23/05/2020 15:49

Do the Cummings family have one child or two? I've seen a reference to a baby. And how old is the child?

They have one four-year-old, who their defenders have repeatedly and persistently described as a 'toddler,' which would be grounds for social services intervention IMO.

@itsgettingweird
Russia Report First thing that came up on google.Though that's the BBC, so probably a lickspittle toadying nothing to see here report of it. I imagine if you can be bothered to trawl there will be better reporting of it. It was a huge story and well known about before the election - the report into how Russia had meddled in the UK democracy (including but not limited to the brexit vote). The report was signed off ready to be published before the election - we are still waiting.

american trade deals again known before the elections though the story did recently resurface again as if it was new. Again I'm sure there are far more reports with far more details if anyone wants to google.

Is Johnson ever going to appear at another briefing? Why the fuck is he not taking responsibility, like other nations' leaders?

Tbh, my take on that is that he could very easily still be unwell after being in intensive care with COVID-19. I should know, as I've been ill for weeks because of the virus, and I wasn't even in hospital or intensive care.

But if this is the case, they should level with us about this, not just hide him away. And if he isn't well enough to govern, then he should step down.

This has given me the perfect excuse to drive down to Cornwall tomorrow to stay in the empty house owned by FIL (next-door to him/SIL/BIL.) It’s essential because I’m anxious about childcare for the DC if we get ill.

Clearly I won’t because it would be morally reprehensible but I am really tempted. What would the police be able to do about it now?

SouthWestmom · 23/05/2020 15:50

Venus

Really? Pathetic to think that someone senior in government should follow the rules we've all been told to follow?

If he found a cure that would be great, and not contrary to any published guidance.

Why wouldnt the "sister" drive down to collect the child if all this were true? Surely they would be too unwell to drive that far. Total nonsense and insult to all of us who have stuck to the rules.

itsgettingweird · 23/05/2020 15:53

Cho I was going to search what Cruella said. You beat me to it! No surprise there.

BackInTime · 23/05/2020 15:55

@Mittens030869 Boris was no where to be seen at the beginning of this crisis so his absence now is nothing to do with his illness. Even during the GE campaign he hid in a bloody fridge and avoided the leadership debates and interviews that other leaders participated in. The more we see of Boris the more he is exposed as an incompetent bumbling charlatan so the strategy is to make sure we don't see evidence of this too often.

mumwon · 23/05/2020 15:55

how the hell did they get up there without stopping -I have travelled with children on that journey & believe me I have doubts you could do this with 2 children ?IIf his wife was ill he might have needed to without warning anyway - & endangered people on route. & if he was driving & unwell that is so out of order - or did he have a driver (& endanger their life)

HappydaysArehere · 23/05/2020 15:55

I read this morning that his wife is a journalist and had written about his daily health as he was experiencing Corona 19. No mention of herself.

KatySun · 23/05/2020 15:55

So fed up of this - I have been looking after my DC myself for nine weeks, one of them is on the autistic spectrum so not exactly easy. I have had covid 19 symptoms for that time, as have DC. No-one but no-one has come and helped me aside from a couple of friends who kindly dropped off food. I am still unwell, I have no idea when I will feel better - so quite frankly, I really do not want to hear the excuses Downing Street are coming up with.

Sorry I have nothing of value to add to this thread, just so fed up.

Zampa · 23/05/2020 15:56

Are you honestly suggesting that Chinese people in Manchester were infectious because of being "twinned" with Wuhan?

This.

Suggesting the British Chinese community were spreading coronavirus is objectionable and not remotely relevant to DC's breach of the guidelines.

But I'm heartened to see very few people on this thread thinking DC had acted appropriately.

madroid · 23/05/2020 15:57

@VenusTiger I don't hate Dominic Cummings, I hate the sheer hypocrisy and heart-breaking situation in which families have had to watch on an ipad their loved ones dying alone, while DC drove 250 to grandparents knowing all three occupants (and the car) were highly contagious in the middle of a pandemic.

I hate the double speak and lying of the government as they support him.

Wasn't going out and any journey against the rules of self-isolation - and still is?

ListeningQuietly · 23/05/2020 15:57

Redskittle / the forest
Mary Wakefield / Cummings brother lives in Holland park, a few miles from them.
There was NO NEED for them to go up north.

Spidey66 · 23/05/2020 15:58

Who's DS?

SansaSnark · 23/05/2020 15:59

*Can anyone clarify some aspects of this -

Do the Cummings family have one child or two? I've seen a reference to a baby. And how old is the child?

If his wife was already ill, did she go on this journey with him? Does she drive and did she share the driving?*

They have one child- he is 4.

His wife was ill first. According to her spectator article, she got ill first, and Dominic got very ill a day later. If this is to be believed (given the article contained a lot of lies) they drove 300 miles whilst somehow being simultaneously too ill to look after a child- which is not a good look.

A sensible response would have been for Mary's brother (who lives in London) to collect their son and look after him if that was needed.

Whenwillthisbeover · 23/05/2020 15:59

BBC online now he’s trying t9 defend his actions whilst being an arrogant arse to the press and saying who cares what it looks like he did nothing wrong.

What a twat.

tara66 · 23/05/2020 15:59

Not read many PPs but there is a lot of support for Cummings in comments about this in Telegraph - some really frightening I thought.
