Why are the supermarket workers not getting sick?

So tell me this ...if supermarkets are a "danger zone" why aren't the supermarket workers all dying and getting sick with this "killer virus"?

It’s because of how information is record it takes time for that detail to filter through where as dying in a Care home is easy to record etc.

We have, but because of self isolation, we are not part of the statistics, same as anybody else who are and have self isolated, some were ill before it was publicised, some before lock down, plastic screens and restrictions. Mainly just before, when everyone went bonkers and we had to restrict quantities of essentials, and customers were up in our faces shouting. A lot of my colleagues and myself, were very ill, but, luckily, life goes on, and we are completely back to full health and back to work 😊

VerbenaGirl · 24/05/2020 18:13

One of the first people I know who had it is a manager at a branch of Tesco. They will be getting exposed to those who are yet to have symptoms or are asymptomatic, so possibly affected with a lower viral load than healthcare professionals and care workers, who are working with much sicker people.

Carpedimum · 24/05/2020 18:17

Friend of a friend’s husband was a supermarket manager, he died of Covid-19 about a month ago, early 40s, no underlying health issues that they knew of.

Bunnyfuller · 24/05/2020 18:18

Loads will have had it, but symptoms vary and again, for the 2579943478994th time, without widespread testing, we’ll never know. And you don’t know who is off work self isolating and others been drafted in to cover. The supermarkets will avoid losing money any way they can!

Sonineties · 24/05/2020 18:18

To catch this you really need to be close to someone for at least 5-10 minutes - or be in a small confined space with poor air flow with a person or people who are infected.

The data from global contact tracing suggests shops and supermarkets in particular are low risk because people tend not to stay close to others for more than a few seconds, and because they generally are big and have good airflow. Smaller shops (like newsagents) are slightly higher risk.

Taliya · 24/05/2020 18:19

Probably not being reported. I have noticed that many of the middle aged and older super market or shop workers are not working and many new younger staff are.

Nevynimportant · 24/05/2020 18:19

We've had staff off with symptoms, including myself. Most of those I know of were just after lockdown, so when it was all chaos, before testing and before restrictions were brought in. Although lately it appears everyone thinks those restrictions instore don't apply to them anymore, and its become a bit of a free for all again. We've also unfortunately had 2 colleagues pass away.

Jeeperscreepers69 · 24/05/2020 18:20

Because they are using that thing..... The immune sysyem im supposing

Gwenhwyfar · 24/05/2020 18:55

"To catch this you really need to be close to someone for at least 5-10 minutes"

Why? Genuine question.
And do you have a link? Not because I don't believe you, just because it would be reassuring.

sas1879 · 24/05/2020 18:55

They are it's just not highlighted like NHS workers. I have personally lost 3 close friends who were supermarket workers and I find it very upsetting that NHS workers are getting a lot of credit special shopping hours free stuff and yet the people keeping everyone with food water etc are getting no recognition

csigeek · 24/05/2020 18:57

Wow. Stupidity really does know no bounds.

Mittens030869 · 24/05/2020 19:00

@sas1879 I'm so sorry to hear this, but sadly it doesn't surprise me, as the government left it too long to decide to decide to implement the lockdown. Supermarket workers were always going to be at risk.

Sweettea1 · 24/05/2020 19:04

They are I know a 4people who work in a big store that have had it thankfully mild cases but all tested postive

Gwenhwyfar · 24/05/2020 19:06

Don't supermarkets have a lot casual or zero hours workers so they can call people in at a moment's notice?

sas1879 · 24/05/2020 19:07

All working people are important but the least paid are the most exposed it seems.

Mrsfussypants1 · 24/05/2020 19:11

Niknick your not in the north east are you? I know of one local asda employee in 50s who died, popular and well loved. Also sainsbury's worker from the same town was hospitalized, I'm not sure how they are, I hope they are well.

Fosler · 24/05/2020 19:18

My daughter is exposed to around 700 people when on the till at the supermarket, along with all of the other staff. None of them have been ill.

Nurgleturtle · 24/05/2020 19:20

there are plenty of us getting sick, even if we have a slightest cough frequently we have to go off for minimum of a week its how we prevent it spreading, when someone has had it confirmed most shops choose to close and deep clean, however the shop i work in ever 30 mins or so we wipe down all the baskets, trolleys, protective screens etc, it probably because were washing our hands a lot more as we have to deal with cash payments, others arent etc... in the beggining we had 8 staff of in 2 weeks then a further 7, we still have 5 staff off shielding and 2 staff off with covid

LillianBland · 24/05/2020 19:26

I feel so sorry for supermarket workers, as they have been slogging their guts out from before the shutdown, stalking shelves for panic buying and now, constantly clearing and stacking shelves, while the same dickheads turn up with the rest of their family, as if it’s their usual day out. I’m not including single parents, disabled people.

LillianBland · 24/05/2020 19:27

Excuse my spelling. My glasses are broken and keep falling off. 🤓

Danja2010 · 24/05/2020 19:30

There has been in the USA and it was highlighted that many workers were sick and that supermarkets were trying to keep it hush, hush .

bigmumsymcgraw · 24/05/2020 19:55

Supermarket workers got the shit end of the stick in this. They really do a great job and are totally undervalued. Thank you from me xx

nuttymomma · 24/05/2020 20:06

There's been several in my local supermarket who got Covid 19.

Bettyboo1957 · 24/05/2020 20:07

High percentage of them are young women with kids - I understand that's a group who can fight it off- thank goodness because they have fed the nations
