Why are the supermarket workers not getting sick?

So tell me this ...if supermarkets are a "danger zone" why aren't the supermarket workers all dying and getting sick with this "killer virus"?

OP posts:

@Aridane

Thank you for letting me know. Sadly it's only one of a lot like that.

Thank you to whoever cared enough to report it - I didn't report it

Loved your Comment

Difficult to tell whether people are goady fuckers or pig shit ignorant fuckers (though I suppose the two aren’t mutually exclusive )

Thumbs up!!

Time2change2 · 23/05/2020 17:51

Tick tick tick and questions like this will help to eventually break the fear heaped upon us.

Sadie789 · 23/05/2020 18:16

@HermioneWeasley a JP Morgan study has concluded that lockdowns in their various forms around the world have had little impact on the course of the virus.

I agree, hindsight will be telling.

MRex · 23/05/2020 18:19

Initial antibody testing results were already given, 17% London and 5% elsewhere. Higher than similar figures from Europe, but not even a third of the way to herd immunity.

irregularegular · 23/05/2020 18:25

Actually if you look at the data, men in sales and customer service occupations have a higher death rate than health care workers. For women it is about the same.

Aridane · 23/05/2020 20:17

No adverts locally for supermarket workers. They seem to be well-staffed. I think OP is right to notice the low risk.

I prefer the data from the ONS on death rates in retail workers than deriving insights from lack of local adverts for supermarket staff !!

lljkk · 23/05/2020 20:22

Can you supply link to the occupational hazard chart, Aridane? Length of the thread is defeating me to find the link. Thx.

LastTrainEast · 23/05/2020 20:24

"I work for a top supermarket. We haven't had to close one store." I can trump that as I'm actually "Chief of keeping track of who is infected in all supermarkets in the world." They had to give me a wider door so the job title would fit.

There are supermarket staff getting infected on my planet, but not sure about yours.

Aridane · 23/05/2020 20:35

@lljkk

Try this - there are various articles and charts in the links. Personally I found the article easier to digest

The people on the checkouts in my tesco are very young, I guess they are fit, strong and healthy.

iwishiwasonhol · 23/05/2020 22:06

I work in a large supermarket ,I have no idea how many staff have symptoms, are having to self isolate for what ever reason ,but to see everyday that they are letting in over 500 customers at a time, who seem to forget about social distancing , in an area that has one of the highest death rates in the north east ,im surprised that theres any off us left

Chelsea567 · 23/05/2020 22:56

No one in our supermarket has had it. One person had symptoms, got tested negative. Everyone else still at work except for about 4 people off shielding due to underlying health conditions. That's out of 150 staff

Maria53 · 23/05/2020 23:09

I personally think a girl who served me recently was quite ill. She also sort of laughed at me for wearing a mask and I had to try hard not to make a comment about how ill she seemed.

And at a google by the 11th May 65 school staff have died of Covid.

Of course some teachers have sadly died. 35,000 people in the UK have died. It stands to reason some of them will be school staff

The statistics show teachers have not died disproportionately

Bluewavescrashing · 23/05/2020 23:39

The statistics show teachers have not died disproportionately

Not yet, because during lockdown they've been working on a rota, only in school a few days a week or every 2 weeks, looking after a small number of children. Or working from home of shielding.

Come early June there will be many more deaths amongst teaching staff when schools welcome higher numbers of children. Being in a classroom for 6 hours a day with 15 children is likely to cause high viral load.

Sadie789 · 23/05/2020 23:53

@bluewavescrashing

But 22 other European countries have opened schools without causing mass educational corona deaths?

Bluewavescrashing · 24/05/2020 00:07

But 22 other European countries have opened schools without causing mass educational corona deaths?

How many of these schools have reopened with the death rate / new cases rate as high as ours right now and with children as young? Many European counties don't start school until children are 7. Age 4-7 struggle with social distancing enormously and their curriculum is the opposite of what we need to do to keep them safe. Of course, we will keep these little 4 and 5 year olds marooned on their desks, with their plastic pencil cases of equipment, no playdoh or small toys, handwashing 6 times a day etc etc (which I believe will be detrimental to their mental health but that's another issue) but they will still find ways to touch surfaces everywhere while walking around the school and gravitate towards each other. It's just what small children do.

Iwillhavetea · 24/05/2020 00:09

My sister in law's a consultant. She has some patients with it and some without. She has said nothing more to me than that. What I do know is she's working full time and has not been unwell.

Lalastepmum · 24/05/2020 17:23

I know of a woman who has passed away working in a large supermarket.
We only hear what ever the agenda allows

LittleMissMe99 · 24/05/2020 17:25

They are, just like anyone else. But we're "only" shop workers. So who reports on it? Also, shop workers aren't in close contact with anyone (unlike carers) so probably not as many catch it as them.

FanfictionFan · 24/05/2020 17:39

Both the hubs and I are supermarket workers, at the very start I had mild symptoms and self isolated, the hubs self isolated with me and got quite severe symptoms and almost had to be hospitalised. The fact is that supermarkets don't advertise the number of staff who are sick and coping at home. The supermarket that closed had a member hospitalised.

Attitude84 · 24/05/2020 17:43

@Remmy123s hubby is very right. So much isn’t being reported or brought out in to the open.
In case of any attacks, I am in no way discrediting the danger retail workers face when working. However, they are able to protect themselves and steer clear of any would be caused... ie coughers not putting their hands over their mouths etc... wearing gloves and masks.

Scorpio75kaz · 24/05/2020 17:45

My nephew got it - he worked at a supermarket. He spent a week in hospital!

Oscarsdaddy · 24/05/2020 17:46

It’s a very valid point.
Our local ‘decent’ supermarket is Waitrose, ok a bit pricey but it’s got nice food and great social distancing measures in place.

I got in to do the weekly shop as the other half doesn’t drive every Thursday. There are always far more staff than customers, I’d say customers outnumbered by 3-1

It appears very few wear protective masks, just gloves and none of them seem to be too concerned about social distancing in store

So it would appear it’s fine to go into the supermarket and mix with strangers but not OK to go into your parents house
