Quarantine on arrival to UK

Wouldn’t it be easier just to test people on arrival? Couldn’t the airline companies just add the test price into to the flight price?

I have a holiday booked for late October ...... I’ve already accepted that the chances of this happening are extremely low, but ultimately am waiting until early October conditions to make final decision (and pay the final balance) - it’s already a hard one because it’s so obvious the holiday companies don’t want to refund anymore money then they have to so unless the boarders are still closed I’m sure my flight will be taking off leaving me with a hard choice - holiday or loss of money

Quarantine will answer that problem though - I can’t work from home so having an extra two weeks in quarantine won’t be possible, so won’t be going! And £1000 is a hell of a lot of money to me so not worth the risk.

Surely we need to be working with other countries? Countries where outbreak is so low, letting them in is likely not going to cause harm. Countries like America where outbreak is high and their approach is as awful as ours need to be watched and limited. Likewise a low infected country probably isn’t going to want British in yet but I’m sure some places will be more willing to open up.

I think the problem is that not everyone presents with a temperature with this virus. Especially if it is just in incubation phase.

It may find a few cases though and again it looks like action is being taken.

But if you get off a plane at say Gatwick then use public transport to reach your own home how many people could you infect on the way? Who is going to ensure people stay indoors for 2 weeks? It can't work.

Gfplux · 23/05/2020 13:40

I wonder if the Government care wether this works or not.

It is a political play to show how tough they are.

What about a pay rise NOW for all health and care workers.

The quarantine system in other countries was mostly set up to cope with their own nationals and long-term residents returning home. Most of them have cancelled visas for non-residents, so are not allowing any tourists in at all, eg Japan.

There is no way this system would work if people were trying to get back to normal levels of leisure or business travel; it is a short term measure which should have been imposed much earlier in the pandemic, and which other countries are probably now looking at lifting.

It seems pointless for the UK to introduce it at this late stage, and I can't see it lasting long in the form outlined - more likely rolling lists of specific countries with current outbreaks for which quarantine is required. And it will only work in conjunction with an efficient domestic test-trace-isolate system, which the British government has also been very slow and incompetent in setting up.

Oh god. It's 'borders'. They closed the borders.

bananaskinsnomnom · 23/05/2020 15:01

Oh yeah - my spelling error - I call it lockdown brain. Don’t get yourself in a twist @jonnybiscuits it’s been a long 9 weeks and there are bigger things to worry about!

jasjas1973 · 23/05/2020 20:10

France has, today, introduced a reciprocal quarantine scheme.... one where the traveller is invited to self quarantine, no compulsion, no fwd address or contact details...

They are just laughing at us.

Be got a family holiday booked to Turkey in July and I had assumed that it wouldn’t be going ahead and had accepted that.

However I’ve come home from work this evening and my husband is saying that what he’s been seeing/hearing today indicates that we still may be able to go.

I really don’t know how I feel about this.

I just can’t imagine that in the next 8 weeks everything is going to be back to normal and people can just travel round the world as they wish, seeing as at the minute we need to be 2m away from people and can’t even go and visit a family member.

Even if the holiday is allowed I don’t know how comfortable/safe I would feel Sad

Quarantine is such a different prospect for an island.

Because yes there might be some unnoticed arrivals by yacht, but they will be very few in number. It doesn't work where there are extensive land borders, especially not fully monitored/controlled (NI/ROI, Schengen)

It does make sense, at any stage with an infectious disease, to quarantine arrivals. Look at how it has been and is used for other mammals

Gfplux · 24/05/2020 08:30

Why the delay to June 8th to bring in quarantine?

If it is for health reasons why is it not starting today or tomorrow?
Waiting over two weeks to implement this is strange. All they have to do is print a few 10’s of thousands of forms and distribute them to a few 100 entry points.

The mistake you've made here, Gfplux, is to assume there's some logic underpinning this decision in the first instance.

The Times reported that this policy was implemented because Dominic Cummings thinks that the public are unhappy that flights are still coming into the UK. That's how they've arrived at this decision.

FarquarKumquatsmama · 24/05/2020 09:16

On one hand I see the logic.

On the other hand, the pp who said you are more likely to pick up corona on a day trip to somewhere in the U.K. than on a holiday to a European country is right.

It’s almost laughable.

Still don’t understand why those of you living in the U.K. are not angry with the government now you are experiencing the consequences of a slow and ineffective response at the start of the crisis combined with years of underinvestment in the nhs.
