When you bring it home?

I have been doing this but I forgot last night after getting something at local tesco, now I'm terrified I've brought the virus home

All survival studies on surfaces are done in lab conditions. In the real world it is basically impossible to get a viral culture from an item.

SnakesandKnives That is an incredibly helpful post. I did know that it was a low risk compared with the risks of eg caring for someone with COVID19 without PPE but this puts it into perspective. You need to be on the daily briefings!

Bartlet · 21/05/2020 18:27

@SnakesandKnives. Thank you for you post. It should be pinned to the top of Mumsnet. So much misinformation on here by so many ill qualified people who are incapable of translating theoretical lab conditions events with real life.

QuestionMarkNow · 21/05/2020 18:31

Never done it.
I haven't been disinfecting my house to the nth degree either. Just normal cleaning.

QuestionMarkNow · 21/05/2020 18:33

YY @SnakesandKnives.

This needs REPEATING often!

TerrapinStation · 21/05/2020 18:37

No, never wiped anything

Think about it OP, how many millions of items are bought every single day, how many letters and packages are delivered, if there was any risk of catching covid from these things why aren't there tens of thousands of positive tests everyday? Why aren't the numbers going up as more shops open?

You seriously don't need to worry about this

Bluntness100 · 21/05/2020 18:38

And in the Heidelberg study where they tested the homes of over a thousand people, in their Wuhan,. They couldn’t find the virus live on any surfaces, even in homes with four infected people. Which validates you’re comment.

They also found that living with an infected person you yourself have a fifty fifty chance of getting it. Hence why Charles did and camilla didn’t..

It’s really really not as infectious as all the media stories would have you believe. There is no need to be disinfecting your shopping or quarantining it.

SockYarn · 21/05/2020 18:39

Have never, ever done this. The risk is so tiny it's really not worth bothering about.

BillywilliamV · 21/05/2020 18:40

Never did, never will!

unappreciativeoh · 21/05/2020 18:41

God, no!

Boredsheep · 21/05/2020 18:43

No and never have. I think it’s one of many things we will look back on and laugh at during this time!

PissOffStayAtHomeDogMum · 21/05/2020 18:44

@PinkSparklyPussyCat What did you do with the pizza? Did you disinfect its base? I'm all agog.

I haven't wiped a single item of shopping since this started, OP, so I really wouldn't worry. What's more, I manage to make whole trips to the local shops, pay for things with cash, probably touch my face, and then don't wash my hands until I get home again. I am certainly not aware of having had Covid, so I really, honestly, wouldn't give it a minute's thought.

MindyStClaire · 21/05/2020 18:44

I'm vulnerable and we haven't at all. If anything, less cleaning than normal happening here.

Here's another article you might find helpful OP. www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/no-evidence-covid-19-can-be-transmitted-by-shopping-1.4235301?mode=amp

okiedokieme · 21/05/2020 18:52

No, I'm trying to remember to wash my hands after shopping but admit even that gets forgotten. That said I think I had it in March and it was very mild so I'm a bit complacent.

FromEden · 21/05/2020 18:56

The CDC are now saying there is little risk of transmission from surfaces. The very small amounts of virus that they were able to detect were inactive within an hour anyway. I wouldnt bother with the wiping of shopping. I did for a bit though but then I just couldn't be arsed with it

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 21/05/2020 19:09

What did you do with the pizza? Did you disinfect its base? I'm all agog

I put it on a plate and ate it. What do you expect me to do with it?

BeltaneBride · 21/05/2020 19:11

Never did -completely bonkers idea

Abbccc · 21/05/2020 19:11

But why do you wash your hands after putting shopping away if you don't think it can spread this way?
And toilet flushes and door knobs?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 21/05/2020 19:15

Surely washing your hands is something you'd do anyway, not just because of coronavirus?

SpnBaby1967 · 21/05/2020 19:18

Nope! It's really not needed, if there was a chance to catch it that way surely supermarket workers and delivery drivers would have been wiped out by now?

I wash my hands, wipe down surfaces the bags were put on and that's it. And I only really worry about doing that because now everything is in plastic bags the bags all just look grotty and dirty.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 21/05/2020 19:22

No.

I'm not vulnerable and don't have health anxiety, but I've nonetheless found myself a lot more aware of what I'm touching, and feel grubby if I don't wash my hands the minute I get back from the shop. So it must be really tough for you and others in a similar situation Flowers

DamnYankee · 21/05/2020 19:23

No. Wash hands, though.

squashyhat · 21/05/2020 19:49

Yes. DH does the shopping, brings the bags through the side gate and unloads onto the garden table, then washes his hands. I wipe everything down with dilute bleach spray, then wash the bags in hot soapy water, washing my hands at the same time. DH then puts everything away and washes hands again. It takes it 5 minutes longer than usual, so we are not going to stop for now.

Bluntness100 · 21/05/2020 20:04

I put it on a plate and ate it

I don’t understand this, if you think the pizza box could be infected and to the level it could infect the pizza, why are you eating the pizza? It’s already been in the box, so the damage done?

I can’t understand your logic at all when the pizza is transported in the box, what benefit is taking it out and eating it off a plate?

Bluntness100 · 21/05/2020 20:05

I’m genuinely not sure if you’re being sarcastic or not? You don’t both do this do you? Not really?

FeelinFagin · 21/05/2020 20:08

I do. We've done it from the start after watching a bloke having a massive five minute coughing fit all over the tinned beans in Tesco. He never even tried to cover his mouth. Dirty bastard. He just couldn't stop coughing and I wouldn't be surprised at all if he'd had CV. He ended up being "advised" by staff to leave the store for some fresh air and perhaps stay clear of other customers.

Due to the pandemic I'm more aware of watching what happens around me and I've actually seen it twice more. Shoppers coughing on the items while reading the packet (and deciding not to buy and putting it back on the shelf!)

DH has very mild asthma but isn't overly afraid of CV so we're not exactly hiding away but my dad is dying and I need to remain healthy to rush to him if he has a turn for the worse and it could be my only chance to see him alive.
