If you have no one vulnerable at home do you still wipe down all your shopping

When you bring it home?

I have been doing this but I forgot last night after getting something at local tesco, now I'm terrified I've brought the virus home

No, I never have. None of us are vulnerable and we've all been healthy throughout.

ssd · 21/05/2020 17:35

Thanks for that link, I'll read it.

My anxiety is going through the roof today, thank god for beta blockers.

No

BogRollBOGOF · 21/05/2020 17:39

No. The virius can survive on surfaces, but the vast majority are not in an optimum state for the virus to be in a suitable condition to infect an otherwise healthy human.

If it really was such a hazard, the majority of people would have been ill by now, and they clearly haven't.

Apolloanddaphne · 21/05/2020 17:41

I never have. I just wash my hands after I have put it all away.

inwood · 21/05/2020 17:43

No never have.

Bluntness100 · 21/05/2020 17:43

Agree, if you could catch it from packaging we’d not have a delivery driver left, never mind warehouse workers, or everyone of us who don’t wipe down packaging.

The logic is obvious. There is clearly little to likely no risk.

wonderstuff · 21/05/2020 17:47

No I haven't wiped down shopping. I've not really changed my hygiene routine, I was already pretty hot on hand washing and we rarely get I'll normally.

In February when the first UK cases were being tracked and traced it seemed that almost everyone becoming unwell had had significant close contact with someone infected, people weren't getting it by shopping in the same shops, so I've assumed that's a low risk.

I did get a virus at the start of lockdown and I think that was via students at the school I teach in. I isolated from my family for a week and no one else got it. There's obviously a possibility they were asymptomatic, but seems likely that if you aren't sharing bathrooms and keep physical distance that is pretty protective.

MrsOrMiss · 21/05/2020 17:47

I've never wiped my shopping down. I wash my hands as soon as I get home and after I've put the shopping away. Then I sanitise my hands. So for, so good.
I'm only getting tested tomorrow because I'm a carer and clients are starting to request they only have carers who have tested negative, even if there's no symptoms.

megletthesecond · 21/05/2020 17:48

Yes.
Or quarantine the cupboard stuff.

The risk is tiny to non-existent but I want to minimise the risk as much as I can.

TheFlis12345 · 21/05/2020 17:50

Haven’t washed a thing.

crazychemist · 21/05/2020 17:53

Nope. Haven’t ever wiped it down.

vodkaredbullgirl · 21/05/2020 17:53

@MrsOrMiss, i got tested yesterday and it was a horrible experience. Fingers crossed myself and my fellow collegues are all ok.

SunbathingDragon · 21/05/2020 17:55

No but I take all the bags and put them in the same place in the kitchen so they aren’t spread around, and I wash my hands after I have put everything away. Our deliveries are in the evening so everything then has at least 12 hours before it is touched again.

It doesn’t really matter if the virus is on something you have bought and brought into your house as long as you don’t transfer to your mouth/nose/eyes before the particles die off. You need to take in a certain amount of the virus to become infected - someone sneezing in your face would do it but if they quickly walked past you breathing normally it wouldn’t.

Idododoidadada · 21/05/2020 17:57

Shielded person at home.
No, I don’t wipe my shopping.

nettie434 · 21/05/2020 18:02

It must be hard having health anxiety at this time Ssd. I wash my hands after unpacking shopping or unwrapping a package but have not wiped every item before putting it away.

Don't worry about forgetting to wipe your shopping this one time. What really matters is washing your hands properly and not touching your face. We know the virus can live on surfaces but the risk of transmission that way is very low. Everyone makes their own decisions about washing/not washing shopping but the likelihood you have infected yourself is mathematically so low. Try not to worry too much (easier said than done I know)

LuluJakey1 · 21/05/2020 18:03

Yes.

Twickerhun · 21/05/2020 18:05

Nope wiping shopping would be the beginning fo the end for my mental health.

Lovely1a2b3c · 21/05/2020 18:08

@Bluntness100 In Spain the restrictions were so strict in lockdown that the only way that non-key workers could catch Coronavirus was from their shopping so yes people can catch it that way. It survives on plastic for up to three days and viral particles can transfer from packaging to hands to eyes/nose/mouth.

@ssd , There's not a huge amount of Covid in the community at the moment and the likelihood of catching it from your shopping is low (it's possible but not very likely). If no-one is classed as vulnerable then it's totally fine to not wipe your shopping.

SpookyNoise · 21/05/2020 18:09

Yes.

SnakesandKnives · 21/05/2020 18:12

@ssd. I have avoided commenting in any of these threads till now but I have worked in infection control for over 15 years and am well qualified to comment.

I am sick of the ‘viruses can survive on surfaces’ Misinformation that has been spread leading to people feeling like you do. It is incredibly difficult to get a virus to survive outside a host and all survival studies on surfaces are done in lab conditions. In the real world it is basically impossible to get a viral culture from an item. Please remember that a virus has a similar ‘strength’ to a soap bubble. Any physical interaction destroys it.

Your shopping offers less risk to you or catching a virus than cutting yourself on one of the plastic bags. It is just about possible but so unlikely as to be a non risk.

PLEASE do not worry about this - it is NOT a real risk.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 21/05/2020 18:12

No, I never have and don't plan to. I don't quarantine anything either. The only concession I've made is I didn't eat pizza straight from the box.

Youneverknowwhatyourgonnaget · 21/05/2020 18:14

Never have and don’t plan on either

BakedCam · 21/05/2020 18:16

OP, there is no need to wipe down your shopping. I understand your anxiety surrounding infection, but good handwashing after handling shopping is essential.

I have never washed down my shopping. We have also had a positive Covid-19 person in our house who has fully recovered.

Thighmageddon · 21/05/2020 18:23

I'm high risk on immunosuppressants and there's precisely zero shopping wiping going on in this house. I just can't be bothered with that level of worry.
