People driving far away to beaches/beauty spots

Just wondering what people opinions are on this.

I'm not a doom monger/dementor, I was overjoyed when Boris said officially we can take unlimited exercise and drive for exercise as well as stop for picnics and I hate the way people have complained about joggers or people going for walks.

It's made a world of difference for us as a family just know know that I can take youngest for a stroll and still go for a run later on, or drive off to the woods or another park for a change of scenery, or sit on the grass while the kids run around with a ball or a frisbee.

But, I don't think I'd feel comfortable driving off to a beach miles away or to another touristy town or anything like that. When I see people on the news piling onto packed beaches that they've travelled far to I do feel a bit disapproving.

The reason for this is we've still got to be very careful at this time and I just feel that we should leave the beaches and beauty spots for the locals to enjoy for now. There could be issues with toilets or people breaking down on the motorway it just doesn't seem in the spirit of things.

There's- ahem - quite a few threads on this already with a robust range of opinions.

Northernsoullover · 21/05/2020 13:55

I wouldn't do it. I'd probably need the toilet.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 21/05/2020 13:56

I'm fairly lax about the whole thing but I'm staying local for now. I don't drive though so would have to use public transport and I couldn't really justify it.

Irnbroothenoo · 21/05/2020 13:57

Doesn’t bother me in the slightest. It’s allowed

juglover2008 · 21/05/2020 13:57

I'd love the drive to the beach or the local park but the closest to me have been packed.

Rebelwithallthecause · 21/05/2020 13:58

It’s allowed so if people want to do it and can hold their bowels then so be it

I can’t hold it so I won’t be doing it

IWantT0BreakFree · 21/05/2020 14:02

It’s common sense really isn’t it? It’s not the driving distance or the fact that place is a beauty spot. It’s about how busy it is and whether it’s going to be possible to adhere to social distancing (and manage without facilities). If you drive an hour to a beach and it’s empty, great. Unfortunately people are finding that these places are busy and then continuing to cram themselves in like sardines and that’s where the danger lies.

Lumene · 21/05/2020 14:06

Blame Boris if you don’t like it - he makes the rules.

icelollycraving · 21/05/2020 14:09

Yesterday we drove to a beach around 45 mins away as we knew the one much more local would be heaving. Got there, packed! We simply turned the car round without getting out, we could see loads of people not social distancing etc. We then drove to another beach about 10 mins from there, it was quiet.
I felt like a bloody fugitive when we first drove from home.

usernotfound0000 · 21/05/2020 14:09

I would if it wasn't for having DD5 who will undoubtedly need a poo within 5 minutes of arriving!

Yes this is how I feel, in theory it makes no difference if I'm at the park 10 minutes away or a beach 100 miles away, only if I arrive at the beach and it's packed, and there are no toilets, I've then got a long drive home.

Blame Boris if you don’t like it - he makes the rules.

It doesn't overly bother me, I've said all the way through this that you have to think for yourself, you can't rely on the government to spoon feed you every single scenario and every single possible detail.
But to me personally this isn't really the best time to be rushing off to beauty spots miles away.

45 minutes drive isn't really that far it's reasonably local.

We are absolutely nowhere near a beach so that possibly clouds my judgement, I'm imagine people travelling from far and wide maybe this isn't the case.

We could hear people talking on their phone saying they’d driven from London. With grandparents etc so clearly some people do travel for a day out.

TabbyMumz · 21/05/2020 14:44

For me, beaches arent my first choice of place to go to and I suspect the novelty will wear off a bit soon. People have been cooped up for a while so can understand them wanting to get out. I think Councils will start to open public toilets soon.

beachgoer · 21/05/2020 14:48

some councils never shut them or the carparks!

HarrietOh · 21/05/2020 14:54

I live 5min walk from the beach and I’ve been avoiding it. I had nice empty beaches for the first part of lockdown so I don’t mind avoiding it now so others can “have their turn.”

GinnyStrupac · 21/05/2020 15:00

I have just been looking at reports in the (reliable) media and from local councils and police in coastal and countryside areas. They pretty much mirror what we have seen and experienced here in our National Park.

Unfortunately, because of the selfish and idiot behaviour of people with seemingly no common sense, restraint or community spirit, especially since Boris changed the guidance last week, I think he needs to pull his finger out and put a 5 mile limit on travelling for exercise. Ideally he would do it before this bank holiday weekend, especially as we don't yet have track and trace at all, antibody testing is only just being started limited to top priority groups and virus testing is still fairly hit and miss.

We are staying local, much as we miss the sea and other places, because we understand and respect the concerns of other communities, their councils and emergency services and volunteers. We share those concerns.

Just because Boris says it's ok to do something doesn't mean it is. He hasn't always set the best example with his own behaviour, including with social distancing which almost certainly led to his own life-threatening covid-19 infection.

How can we go for 'a safe, measured and controlled' reopening of schools and businesses when at the same time we're witnessing the chaotic scenes of covidiots off on non essential jollies around the country with the permission of the PM? The two just don't add up, unless the hidden, unspoken strategy is back to the ill-fated herd immunity?

Kcnana · 21/05/2020 15:30

Doesn't bother me at all. It's nice to see people enjoying themselves -making the most of the easements and lovely weather.

TheAlphaandtheOmega · 21/05/2020 15:34

Well you are allowed, and nice to see people out and about, I won't be though as I don't like beaches much at the best of times

transformandriseup · 21/05/2020 15:38

It's not against the rules so I can't complain but I will be choosing to avoid anywhere where I can't stay a reasonable distance apart from others, even if it means avoiding all of local tourists spots this summer.

Thisdressneedspockets · 21/05/2020 15:41

Our council is so worried about visitors that they've shut carparks. As someone who lives about ten minutes drive away in the same town ( just a bit too far to walk), I'd rather they left them open.
I can easily drive past and make a choice about whether to stop or not based on how busy it looks. As it is, it's challenging for me to park at the quiet times I'd usually visit and be one of only very few people on the dog beach.

beachgoer · 21/05/2020 15:47

it has made me laugh at how seasides are up in arms at people peeing in the ornamental flowerbeds etc ......but the bogs are all shut!

seasides where they are open....none of this.

same with carparks.

common sense anyone?

ITonyah · 21/05/2020 15:48

So. Don't. Go.

daisymay133 · 21/05/2020 15:53

Don’t get the fuss - It’s not against the rules

People just seem intent on forcing their own style of lockdown and making up rules as they go

The way the no of cases are going we will all be unlocked in few weeks anyway

No one in my town is on lockdown anymore and haven’t been for couple of weeks . People have had enough and just using common sense and living with it

A position we should have taken from the start imo

beachgoer · 21/05/2020 15:55

then the same places will moan in 1 or 2 yrs time that the tourists have stayed away!!

It is making me laugh in a demented kinda way that some people are so manipulated by the media into fearing their own basic judgement that they feel thy must don hairshirts and self imprison themeselves and their poor kids. physical and mental health goes hand in hand.

I think its pretty shameful how the media have handled this. Its all doom and gloom "we`re all gonna die". Yet anything positive is swept under the carpet. and people are lapping this up!!

did no one learn critical thinking at secondary at all? my ds can even see it .
