People driving far away to beaches/beauty spots

Just wondering what people opinions are on this.

I'm not a doom monger/dementor, I was overjoyed when Boris said officially we can take unlimited exercise and drive for exercise as well as stop for picnics and I hate the way people have complained about joggers or people going for walks.

It's made a world of difference for us as a family just know know that I can take youngest for a stroll and still go for a run later on, or drive off to the woods or another park for a change of scenery, or sit on the grass while the kids run around with a ball or a frisbee.

But, I don't think I'd feel comfortable driving off to a beach miles away or to another touristy town or anything like that. When I see people on the news piling onto packed beaches that they've travelled far to I do feel a bit disapproving.

The reason for this is we've still got to be very careful at this time and I just feel that we should leave the beaches and beauty spots for the locals to enjoy for now. There could be issues with toilets or people breaking down on the motorway it just doesn't seem in the spirit of things.

Like Sweden?

Kcnana · 21/05/2020 15:56

@ITonyah Why shouldn't people go? It's now permitted and we can't stay inside forever. Common sense would be to open public toilets and car parks to prevent people dropping turds in bushes and spreading out to residential areas to dump their cars.

beachgoer · 21/05/2020 15:56

misery loves company is an old saying. It is very true in the coronavirus threads I see!

ITonyah · 21/05/2020 15:56

Yeah whatever beachgoer, I don't like people shitting on beaches if that doesn't set off your highly developed critical thinking radar.

Larkspurandhollyhocks · 21/05/2020 15:58

I think the rule should have been drive but within an hour of your home tbh. Nuts to say you can go as far as you like 🤦

beachgoer · 21/05/2020 15:58

exactly @Kcnana! some seasides agree and guess what its been bloody wonderful. Even (now frothers will hate this) the dougnut/ icecream stalls are open!!

ITonyah · 21/05/2020 15:58

My rule of thumb is not to go anywhere that means I might end up shitting on the beach. High standards I know.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 21/05/2020 16:00

If anyone thinks busy beaches are going to turn into superspreading events they haven’t been following the science.
As long as the bars and restaurants and other noisy indoor attractions stay shut local people really shouldn’t be worried.

beachgoer · 21/05/2020 16:00

on the corona threads its competitive misery !

ITonyah · 21/05/2020 16:02

Would have easily been sorted if they did what Ireland did and limit the distance you can travel - 5km from your house no further

Giving people the option to go wherever They want was always going to be a disaster

ITonyah · 21/05/2020 16:04

Yes Ireland have done well.

Kcnana · 21/05/2020 16:09

@ITonyah Good for you. We clearly sit on very different sides of the fence on this one. If you're happy staying in your house watching the world go by for the next weeks/months/years - fab. You do that but please don't tell others not to do things that are very much in line with government guidelines.

It is common sense to me that if you open up beaches and tell people they can now travel, enjoy a picnic & sunbathe etc that there should be public facilities made available.

ineedaholidaynow · 21/05/2020 16:10

Limiting the distance would have been the ideal and sensible solution, but unfortunately the Government aren’t famed for doing the sensible solution. They have gone with the approach of relying on people’s common sense, which unfortunately has highlighted how stupid many people are.

We live reasonably close to beaches but are avoiding them at the moment because of the hordes of people who are driving from hundreds of miles away to come to them. Yes, technically it is allowed but probably not the most sensible option. It will be really awful if the instances of the virus increase in this area due to people’s stupidity.

ITonyah · 21/05/2020 16:12

I don't see why they cant open up schools next week if its essential to have people cleaning the bogs by the beach and opening all the cafes for them.

Cornishclio · 21/05/2020 16:17

Perhaps all the furloughed workers can now go back to work as it is clearly ok for toilets, cafes etc to open up so people can go about their entirely essential visits to the beach. Why not open shops and schools and gyms now while we are at it. It is not like we have a deathly virus to contend with.

This really made me laugh! This is exactly why I don’t want to be too far from home at the moment, I wouldn’t feel comfortable using toilets even if they were open. But each to their own.

Kcnana · 21/05/2020 16:25

Let's all hide from a virus for the foreseeable until it magically disappears. Causing economic ruin, poverty, a mental health crisis, death...

LuckyAmy1986 · 21/05/2020 16:31

Personally I’m not trying to hide, we are going to country parks near home, will probably have a picnic tomorrow. But driving far from home at the moment not knowing where I can go to toilet? No thanks!

FliesandPies · 21/05/2020 16:31

Except that they're not staying in their house. They just want everyone else to.

Barbie222 · 21/05/2020 16:32

No loo, no parking. So no, I won't be going.

Jaxhog · 21/05/2020 16:33

He's made the fatal mistake of assuming people have common sense and can behave like reasonable adults. While most of us can, unfortunately, there is a significant minority who can't and need strict rules. What's worse - a bunch of stupid idiots behaving badly, or strict rules for everyone? I wish I knew.

beachgoer · 21/05/2020 16:33

you can google the councils you know and find this info out!

the internet is a wonderful thing for this........same for parking.

LuckyAmy1986 · 21/05/2020 16:36

Actually I Should have said not being able to use the toilet, because I wouldn’t use a public one right now.

FliesandPies · 21/05/2020 16:39

He's made the fatal mistake of assuming people have common sense and can behave like reasonable adults.

So it's their fault not his. Okey doke
