Furlough

I've been furloughed from my bar job on 80% wages.
In the meantime I've been offered a very small job (10 hours pw) at a local supermarket which won't impact on my bar job if/when pubs reopen.

A friend has just said to me I need to be careful accepting the supermarket job as could have the furlough taken away from me.

Is this correct, is my current employee able to just remove the furlough if thru don't want me working elsewhere? Seems unfair

According to Martin Lewis you can work for a different employer as long as your contract with your current employer doesn't for it it.

Flymetothetoon · 18/05/2020 14:55

That should read 'doesn't forbid it'

BamboozledandBefuddled · 18/05/2020 14:56

The government's wording is that you can take a second job while furloughed ' if your contract allows'. What does your contract say? If it doesn't say you can't take a second job then go for it. You do have to be able to go back to your original job at very short notice if required though.

SavoyCabbage · 18/05/2020 14:57

I think it varies according to what you have signed. You have to be able to leave the new job and go straight back to your furloughed job if you are asked to.

MrsG010814 · 18/05/2020 14:57

As pp says you need to check your contract. I'm on furlough leave and my contract prohibits me from working elsewhere.

Nihiloxica · 18/05/2020 14:58

As Flyme said.

As long as your bar job hasn't specified that you can't take other work, then you can.

In your case it's hard to see what interest a closed bar could have in preventing you from working a few hours on a shop.

KaronAVyrus · 18/05/2020 15:01

Depends on your furlough contract. I’m not allowed but everyone is different.

DorsetCamping · 18/05/2020 15:19

I have no contract! It's been casual work but
I'm fortunate enough to have been furloughed

How well do you get on with your manager? Any chance you could give him/her a call?

I think there is going to be huge redundancies in the hospitality sector so I think it might be wise to swap to good retail if possible.

Nihiloxica · 18/05/2020 15:26

If you have no contract, then you can take this work while furloughed.

It might be nice to call your boss to mention it.

But equally, you don't have to.

DorsetCamping · 18/05/2020 15:41

Thanks will give her a call.

I'm worried as another colleague who also works at Tesco's wasn't furloughed Confused

Pleased to report all resolved.

I messaged the bar manager who firstly said "congrats I'll remove you from Furlough then" Confused; but when I said I didn't have anything in written forbidding it, she backtracked and said she'd check with owner.

He's come back and confirmed it's fine! Smile
