Italy open from June 3rd

So Italy is opening for international travel on the 3rd June.

Have a villa and flights booked there for end of July but I was hoping it’d be cancelled, I really don’t want to go.

Also it says they’ll be allowing Schengen/European countries but I’ve seen that some countries are reluctant to let brits in due to how badly affected we’ve been.

Looks like I’m set to lose a lot of money if we decide not to go.

Are they insisting that you have to quarantine when you arrive ?

FTMF30 · 18/05/2020 08:00

Have you looked into implications of cancelling given the circumstances? I doubt there's much hope there but it's worth looking into.

I can't believe it. They don't seem to have put any restrictions in place from what I've read either. Any old country can go there in 2 weeks! Wealth over health.

Confusedbutheyho · 18/05/2020 08:03

@AnyFucker

Just looking through the papers now, it seems you don’t have to quarantine when you get there but you do have to self quarantine for 14 days when you get back. Bizarre!

@FTMF30

I know it’s simply mad. Trouble is we’ve split the costs with another family for certain things and they are rearing to go.

Wealth over health indeed, as now people will unlikely get refunds if there’s no restrictions in place.

The quarantine (either end) would make it impossible for me. I guess cancelling would be your own choice though, hence losing your money. Have you looked into whether they would let you postpone ?

Confusedbutheyho · 18/05/2020 08:10

@anyfucker

Looking on the websites now to find out about postponing at least our flights, but it would buggar everything up for the family we’re going with if we postpone. Might just say they can go on ahead and cut our losses.

Nightmare

PetraDelphiki · 18/05/2020 08:16

We are in the same position - hoping by then UK will have non quarantine arrangements with mainland Europe...otherwise we will probably go anyway - not sure quarantine would be vastly worse than initial stages of lockdown!

Dollywilde · 18/05/2020 08:18

Oh wow - haven’t seen this. We were due to go mid-June, have already cancelled accommodation but we were waiting for flights to be cancelled. We’d made our peace with losing the cash if we didn’t get a refund (booked the whole thing very low cost as I’ll be 31 weeks pregnant and we accepted that there was always a chance we’d need to junk the plan to go, even pre Covid) but I’m really surprised by this. Surely they still have to refund if UK is still in lockdown? It’s one thing Italy saying ‘come on in’ but if the UK aren’t letting people go to the airport etc then how are you meant to get there?

Accept I am probably clutching at straws!

Goatymcgoaty · 18/05/2020 08:55

Do you have travel insurance to cover you for corona while you’re out there? Lots of policies don’t / won’t.

sofato5miles · 18/05/2020 09:04

The insurance is interesting, as the vast majority of younger people do not require medical help. Are there any stats on the risks for 40s and younger requiring medical assistance?

sofato5miles · 18/05/2020 09:05

It is a nightmare to unpick the risks, never mind the rules

MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet · 18/05/2020 10:16

I just wish we'd have an idea when the FCO will lift its advice on not travelling, as that'll be the main issue for Brits I assume for summer, and will be the basis for most travel insurance claims?

Juanmorebeer · 18/05/2020 10:20

If FCO advice is not to travel, isn't all travel insurance automatically void?

tootyfruitypickle · 18/05/2020 12:06

If fco still has advice not to travel presumably flights will be cancelled. Another place I was going in May has reopened but as brits can’t travel and flights cancelled they’ve allowed rebooking
