Why are people not wearing masks?

I’m queuing inside my local supermarket, I’ve see one other person wearing a mask.

Does it not make sense to just TRY to protect other people and try and keep infection rates down. Even a scarf wound round your face?!

I think they should be compulsory when you are inside. Is it the PPE shortage which is preventing Boris from making it so?

Talk to me about masks!

Only on public transport/in shops.
Socially responsible thing to do. I’m not at risk from the virus but wouldn’t want to inadvertently spread it to those who are.

GachaBread · 16/05/2020 23:53

This virus is not going away, it is here to stay. So does that now mean we need to wear them forever.
I am intrigued to find out how long a person will wear them for.
So on a night out?
A meal in a restaurant?
A job interview?
Most people can not be heard properly when talking so what happens when you order food or want a cigarette or trying to express yourself in everyday situations?

Maybe you have a cold, the flu, hay fever, what happens when you sneeze in it, (I no gross)

What happens with the banks, high end shops, airports will you be able to walk in with your mask or will you be required to remove for security reasons?

Will criminals be able to get away with more crime under the disguise of the masks, does that mean more suffering for people when the bad guys can not be caught.

Most masks have to be disposed off once a day, surgical masks every 4 hours so how many masks would a person need in a week?

I wonder how many people wearing masks now will be wearing them in the height of summer or by next year.

Crimsonnightlotus · 17/05/2020 00:06

Gacha, you don't have to justify yourself for not wearing them. It's such a simple thing. If everyone wear them, it may slow down the spread, but who cares, it's too uncomfortable.

okiedokieme · 17/05/2020 00:09

If you distance there's little benefit and they are awkward if you wear glasses, mine steam up. I use a silk scarf on public transport if crowded though

tamsintamsout · 17/05/2020 00:13

Thanks a bunch you’ve all got me in tears you judgemental cunts. I’ve tried to explain why it might be hard for someone and not one person can be arsed to say a kind word.

tamsintamsout · 17/05/2020 00:14

Don’t bother now I’m hiding this thread

Maybe don’t be so fucking quick to judge

GachaBread · 17/05/2020 00:14

I am not justifying to myself I am generally asking because I am curious. The whole point of lockdown was to slow down deaths not stop it so if masks become the new norm or mandatory how do we adapt in certain situations?
Corona is not going away and people are wearing masks to protect themselves and others, if the virus is here to stay then how long will this be our new normal for?
I was in a branch of my local bank the other day and a man was told to remove his mask for security reasons. He removed his mask but then obviously that defeated the whole point of wearing one. I see people jogging outdoors with their masks around the necks, I see people who have them incorrectly tied, people having fag breaks in queues of supermarkets and then putting them back on, I see people sweating with them on. All sorts, not everyone can wear them and people who do not wear them should not be called twats or told that they are murderers and so on.

GachaBread · 17/05/2020 00:19

@crimson also you say you wear masks but your husband does not so again defeats the point.

Crimsonnightlotus · 17/05/2020 00:26

I won't call people twats or murderers, I can't even make my English dh wear one. Just that I don't understand the mentality of it. It's not to protect you, but protect others. But I also can see that, for wearing the mask to be norm, people's way of thinking needs to change drastically, which may not be easy as you describe, it's not normal thing to do in England.

Crimsonnightlotus · 17/05/2020 00:27

Cross posted. Yes, that's exactly true, Gacha.

OneNewName · 17/05/2020 00:28

I was the only person in a nearly empty supermarket wearing a mask earlier. Got a few funny looks but continued anyway.

IndiaMay · 17/05/2020 00:28

I am not wearing a mask because I am not a hypochondriac

GachaBread · 17/05/2020 00:30

One more question people, what's your thoughts on children having to wear them?

SudokuBook · 17/05/2020 00:41

My youngest will not be wearing a mask. He is autistic with sensory difficulties and will at best paw at his face constantly.

Mnthrowaway20202 · 17/05/2020 00:46

If I wear a mask solely to protect you from my germs, why do you care if I adjust it, touch my phone or take it off when I’m not in near others anymore? You still wouldn’t be exposed to my germs.

Masks are stuffy and uncomfortable. I have a slim nose/face so masks tend to be oversized - when I wear one, my view downwards can be partially blocked. I have to be extremely careful using stairs and escalators sometimes as I can’t see my feet well - obviously in this situation it’s more appropriate for me to adjust the mask to avoid injury.

For masks to be effective it needs to be flush against your nose and chin, else your germs will seep through the gaps. Masks do require some adjusting from time to time else there’s no point wearing them.

SudokuBook · 17/05/2020 00:50

@tamsintamsout Flowers honestly ignore the judgemental twats. I am totally fed up with perfectly normal and reasonable behaviour being labelled “selfish”. As if we are now meant to put the interests of randoms ahead of ourselves at all times to avoid passing on a virus that most of us don’t even have, regardless of the damage to our own well-being. Fuck that for a game of soldiers.

Singinginshower · 17/05/2020 00:51

tamsintamsout. Sorry that you had such a traumatic experience, which is still having an effect on you.
It is definitely not going to be compulsory to wear masks generally in the community. You do not need to justify yourself to anyone.

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 17/05/2020 01:11

DH and I both wear KN95 masks to visit any public places. I would estimate about 30% of customers are wearing them in the shops I visit. I don't touch the mask after putting it on and still maintain 2m between me and any other person. When I get back to the car I sanitise my hands before removing the mask.

I feel better for wearing it knowing that, should I have Covid-19 and be asymptomatic, I am protecting others. I also believe it affords me some protection from others. I am not interested in what others may think of me wearing one.

2catsblack · 17/05/2020 02:21

My GP is saying masks from Monday for face to face appointments. I haven't seen anyone locally wear one. I have read the research - for me a homemade one would remind me not to touch my face etc. It is really infected people that need to wear them..,,

2catsblack · 17/05/2020 02:41

Just read all the comments. I haven't actually left the house for 9 weeks as shielding. So I am the high risk group. I am working from home & helping make scrubs in my spare time. I need to wear one on Monday for blood tests. Perhaps I practice tomorrow!

Willyoujustbequiet · 17/05/2020 03:33

Because for the most part they are selfish idiots.

forgetmeyes · 17/05/2020 03:35

I'm not wearing on because of anxiety. If I wear one I can't breathe, that panic me and causes a panic attack in which I need to take off the mask anyway to breath and also cough and splutter everywhere (not because I'm ill, it's part of the panic attack). So no, I am not being selfish by not wearing a mask, me wearing one would actually put a lot more people in a lot more danger.

You are horrible and rude and bigoted if you just assume everyone not wearing one is a selfish twat. Many many people have valid reasons and even if you think their reasons 'aren't valid' you can shove your opinion because you have no idea how it effect them and you have no right to judge!

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 17/05/2020 04:50

I'm a nurse so obviously wear one at work. The surgical masks are a ball ache. I have to use the button things everyone has made to hold them together at the back to protect my ears and to prevent it moving up to my eyes all the time. And as a glasses wearer I've yet to find an effect way to prevent them steaming up that isnt basically try and breath slower. Its unpleasant and I leave work with an absolute stinker of a headache.

I wore a homemade mask for the first time yo the supermarket after the advice changed recently. It was awful, worse than the surgical mask but I kept it on.

Out of interest why arent shop staff wearing them? I've been to 2 supermarkets and home bargains in the past week (for essential reasons I might add) and no staff had them on.

PhilCornwall1 · 17/05/2020 05:03

I'm not because I don't want to wear one, simple as that really.
