Why are people not wearing masks?

I’m queuing inside my local supermarket, I’ve see one other person wearing a mask.

Does it not make sense to just TRY to protect other people and try and keep infection rates down. Even a scarf wound round your face?!

I think they should be compulsory when you are inside. Is it the PPE shortage which is preventing Boris from making it so?

Talk to me about masks!

There are some right obnoxious self righteous d*cks on here aren't there. People are obviously missing the pub...

tamsintamsout · 16/05/2020 22:40

You’ve done a survey have you?

PastaPins · 16/05/2020 22:40

Likewise

LizzieSiddal · 16/05/2020 22:40

I spent ages making masks for the whole family, with my sewing machine, Well I lasted less than 5 minutes! I couldn’t breath properly and my glasses streamed up so I couldn’t see. Also the no of people I see misusing masks is worrying. I’ve seen people constantly moving the mask about, which is the same as rubbing your dirty hands all over your mouth/nose.

If however, I were on public transport or couldn’t keep a 2m distance I would wear one.

userxx · 16/05/2020 22:41

@@Whataloadofshite Oh give over.

downtheplug · 16/05/2020 22:42

The masks are designed to keep the virus in, not to protect those breathing out.

Follow social distancing rules, wash your hands and if you have concerns, get information.

Jellybean27 · 16/05/2020 22:44

Im not offended @MadCattery, bit baffled tho.

Hijabs aren’t worn to stop the wearer from spreading a deadly virus. Face coverings in this instance aren’t being recommended to maintain modesty.

Jellybean27 · 16/05/2020 22:46

I don’t drink hun @Footywife

browzingss · 16/05/2020 22:48

I have a mask, I assume I’m supposed to dispose of it after one use though? If so, can anyone link to masks online? Do i need a certain type?

stopandListen · 16/05/2020 22:54

@PastaPins see it's attitudes like this that really are more concerning, the smugness, and judging. It is not compulsory and until it is people are allowed to have a choice.

I consider going into work to provide a vital service to the public (child protection) and sending my two young children into school so I CAN go to work pretty considerate.

TimeWastingButFun · 16/05/2020 22:57

I don't understand it. I always wear a mask, everywhere now. it's the government guidelines in shops. I was one of about 3 in the supermarket the other day wearing one though 😕

Whataloadofshite · 16/05/2020 23:05

When you don't wear a mask, you're choosing to be a selfish twat, that's your choice.

Stay the fuck inside if you don't want to wear one.

FinnsLeftSpoon · 16/05/2020 23:07

I live in a place where masks are recommended by govt but not compulsory. But those stores that are open won't let you in if you're not wearing one. The government has distributed some masks but mostly people buy or make their own.

The country hasn't had a single new case in about three weeks. Lockdown is gradually being lifted but people are being strongly urged to continue wearing masks in public.

It feels horrible but it's just a cloth mask, not PPE, which is reserved for medical staff, and if it helps then why not? Especially if it means we can return sooner to some kind of normality.

It doesn't hinder communication unless perhaps you're hearing-impaired & depend on being able to lipread.

TheTeenageYears · 16/05/2020 23:11

The whole "stay at home, stay safe, protect the NHS" mantra was a collective responsibility thing. I see mask wearing as the same. One of the worst things to happen at the beginning of February was the massive debate on mask wearing and which type of masks were needed to fully protect the wearer. If you are out and about and sneeze I guarantee you that for most people there is not enough time to get out a tissue and hold in both hands to ensure there is no escape from anywhere around the tissue and the minute you move the tissue surely you are waving potential virus around. If you sneeze into your arm you are just as unlikely to completely stop any spray so on that basis wearing a mask must be preferable. It can't be a coincidence that the numbers of people with the virus/numbers of deaths have been controlled much better in countries where masks are a common sight in daily life compared to the UK. I also think it's sensible to wear glasses at all times so even non glasses wearer's get some level of protection by wearing either sunglasses outside or non lense glasses inside. When I can't have a drink I'm thirsty, when there's no toilet I need a wee, when I go out and shouldn't touch eye's and nose I absolutely have the urge to - it's human nature. You can make a mask with a sock and a pair of scissors.

Ariela · 16/05/2020 23:11

I stopped at some traffic lights today, in the car next to me the man wore a mask. I noticed this immediately because he started fiddling with it, he pushed it on further then messed about with the nose. He saw me looking his way and stopped, I looked away but carried on watching and before the lights had changed he was back fiddling with it THREE MORE times. I can't understand the benefit of him wearing one.

Crimsonnightlotus · 16/05/2020 23:12

We have lots of disposable masks at home, because me being Asian who is used to wear mask when coughing, and my dc has weak immune system, so I had it all the time for last decade and worn it when I have cold so not to pass it on to dc in the house. [weird, I know]
Now we have stock of masks, but my dh(English) won't wear it, says it's not British thing to do.

Poetryinaction · 16/05/2020 23:15

Why do people with masks still play on their phonea in the queue?

PickAChew · 16/05/2020 23:16

Because, inside a spacious supermarket, there's no way I'm going to put something uncomfortable on my face that'll steam my glasses up constantly and give me the constant urge to fiddle with it. It would defeat the whole object. By the time I've queued, shopped and paid, it would be at the point of being too damp to be effective, anyhow.

I would cover my face if, say, our tiny little greengrocer re-opened, though, as it's hard to social distance in there and I wouldn't need to wear it for long enough for my skin to become irritated.

Redolent · 16/05/2020 23:16

@Poetryinaction

What’s wrong with that?

Crimsonnightlotus · 16/05/2020 23:21

Actually, the mask is kind of compulsory in my country, not to protect you, but to stop you spreading.

PestymcPestFace · 16/05/2020 23:21

poetry why does anyone play with their phone when out?
My phone stays put away until I have clean hands or a total emergency.

In order to return to a nearly normal life, we are all going to have to put up with a myriad of minor inconveniences. Wearing a mask, at times, is just one of those things.

EmMac7 · 16/05/2020 23:21

Amazes me that people will bang pots on their doorsteps for the NHS every Thursday...but they won’t wear a mask in public, something that can much more directly help the NHS and their fellow citizens.

What a weird country.

Jellybean27 · 16/05/2020 23:35

You read my mind @EmMac7

Sleepyquest · 16/05/2020 23:40

Because of all the damn mixed messages from BJ.

FergusComeLately · 16/05/2020 23:41

Glasses wearers - I am one too, I can’t wear normal dusk masks because of the steaming up problem but I found my homemade fabric one (which has a bit of soft garden wire sewn into the nose part) is fine as it fits much more snuggly and so doesn’t steam up.

You don’t need to do anything clever just fold over the end of the wires and shove it between your main fabric and lining fabric and run a line of stitches underneath it to hold it in place.

Those of you with sensory issues, PTSD, claustrophobia - yes, it will be impossible for you to wear them and you should be free from judgement but may not be as time goes on Sad Luckily I think you will be a teeny fraction of the population.

Anyone without a reasonable excuse, I guess we’ll just have to wait until it’s either the law or places you want to go won’t let you in without one, before you see fit to wear one.

Totally agree with whoever said it’s the equivalent of ‘it’s just flu, we won’t go into lockdown etc ’...we don’t need to wear masks.

And for the nasties who said I was just wanting to be smug and point fingers, not so, I said ‘talk to me about masks’ not, why are you tossers not wearing masks? I just wanted to understand the reasoning, medical or otherwise,

Anyway, wear them, don’t wear them but I will do continue with my ropey sewing making several each for my family. I’m sure they will be delighted, not!
