Positive news for vaccine development

New study eliciting a positive reaction from the scientific community:

“... rare but recurring RBD-specific antibodies with potent antiviral activity were found in all individuals tested, suggesting that a vaccine designed to elicit such antibodies could be broadly effective.”

According to lead virologist, Paul Bieniasz:

“A mixture of good news and less good news:
Less good news: Many individuals who had mild #COVID19 mount weak neutralizing antibody response
Good news: looks like most CAN mount a potent neutralizing response. A good vaccine MIGHT give better protection than natural infection.”

Out with ‘herd immunity’ by the sounds of things...

And in terms of the Oxford vaccine:

A vaccine against coronavirus appears to have provided protection against the disease Covid-19 in six rhesus macaque monkeys.

It gives early hope for the vaccine, which is now undergoing human clinical trials.

There is no guarantee this result will translate to people, though.

A group of monkeys was exposed to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The six animals that were vaccinated had less of the virus in their lungs and airways.

The trial took place in the US, involving researchers from the US government's National Institutes of Health (NIH) and from the University of Oxford.

The vaccine appeared to protect the animals against developing pneumonia.
