Secondaries open from 1st June?

Tonii1985 · 15/05/2020 20:14

I work at a secondary school.
Our head just emailed us to say we have been told that we will find out on May 28th if we are to re open on June 1st for year 10 and 12.

I thought primaries were supposed to be first? This is different to what I have read in the media and heard the government say so I'm a bit baffled.

Apparently in his 50 page waffle it also says about secondaries on 1st June
Not the only secondary heard about reopening

MrAlyhakinsMassiveYacht · 15/05/2020 20:18

Our weekly letter said the LA had told them to stop even speculating about when they could open.

softjellycell · 15/05/2020 20:18

How are they going to find out on May 28th? Surely as an academy (I think all secondaries are academies now) it's down to the governors and the SLT to come to decision together.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 15/05/2020 20:18

We will go in on a very reduced timetable for year 10 and 12 only for last week of June. Online teaching at all other times and for all other year groups

Windyatthebeach · 15/05/2020 20:19

Our secondary school emailed with updated workload for students to start 1 St June.
Our council has just released update our schools are not going back.

Rhianna1980 · 15/05/2020 20:21

What happened to three weeks’ notice?

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 15/05/2020 20:22

Absolutely not. Have just had notice from the kids high school that definitely for year 7,8,9 it will be September at the earliest. And nothing about 10,12 apart from doing some teams teaching

Livedandlearned · 15/05/2020 20:25

Ours is open from 1st June for small classes of 8 on certain days, for years 10&12 only

Deelish75 · 15/05/2020 20:26

I thought secondary's were offering "face to face" time with students which is to begin from 1st of June.

I don't have any secondary children but I took that to mean a student would come in and have sessions/meetings with various teachers.

SierraHotel · 15/05/2020 20:26

My dds are year 5 and year 10. I thought Boris said that all of primary will hopefully go back for a month before the Summer holiday and that yr 10 will get some time with their teacher before the Summer break..whatever that means 🤷‍♀️. But then I haven't seen the 50 page document thing so maybe I'm wrong.
Hartlepool Council have announced that they've decided that no schools in the borough will be opening 1st June, other than for the children attending now.

Tonii1985 · 15/05/2020 20:33

I'll have a read of the proper document then. I think I just misunderstood - I thought it meant a bit of time before summer, like a couple of weeks.
We are not an academy, no.

Not all Secondary schools are academies, and academies have to follow Government guidance.

@StaffAssociationRepresentative has the Government guidance for secondaries been published yet, apart from the short paragraphs in the Primary School planning guidance?

Andorra155 · 15/05/2020 20:44

I read it as 'some' face to face teaching for those years from 1st June.

3teens2cats · 15/05/2020 20:45

They want yrs 10 and 12 to have some face to face teaching to complement the remote learning. Yrs 7,8&9 are not mentioned which i have taken to mean they will not be back before September. They are stuck in the middle, mostly mature enough to be left home alone, no exams for a bit and reasonably able to work i remotely to a certain extent.

RunningNinja79 · 15/05/2020 20:49

DS is in year 10. Due to his ECHP he has been getting regular phone calls from his TA. He was advised today that his school are looking at middle of June.

I understood the guidance to be years 10 and 12 to have some face to face time to work with their home schooling. So, to me, that would suggest they would go in once a week or so to discuss their work and any issues, but would continue to work from home the rest of the time.

DS's school doesn't have a 6th form so they only have to worry about year 10 ATM.

Chillipeanuts · 15/05/2020 20:51

Suspect not.

thelockdownbellyisoutofcontrol · 15/05/2020 20:52

@softjellycell all secondaries most certainly aren't academies!

softjellycell · 16/05/2020 07:55

It's years since I've come across one that isn't an academy, that surprises me.

softjellycell · 16/05/2020 07:58

I checked. 68% are academies, less than I thought,

SmileEachDay · 16/05/2020 08:07

Our academy has put in place a solid plan with the caveat that it won’t happen if government change their stance.

Our leadership team agree with the union stance - which has also been endorsed by the BMA - but accept we may be directed to open.

Starts on the 8th, which gives 3 weeks of term time to prep.

Pipandmum · 16/05/2020 08:12

Our school (private) is taking the 'face to face' time for Y10 and 12s as a hopeful sign that with a looser interpretation they can go back in some form in June. But no firm decision made, though they have sent out a detailed survey to all parents about what people would accept. Meanwhile they are making changes to the school to help with social distancing.

cologne4711 · 16/05/2020 08:38

My son's 6th form college (academy) has said no face to face teaching this year though they hope to do 1 2 1s with tutors in early July.
