Yes yes and yes!!

TinRoofRusty · 14/05/2020 23:18

YES!

PerkingFaintly · 14/05/2020 23:19

The lecture was given at Gresham College, which has been holding lectures to improve public knowledge of, well, everything, for 400 years.

The Royal Society was hatched out of Gresham College.

www.gresham.ac.uk/about/history/

So looks like the clip has been taken by some other organisation.

Lostnameperson · 14/05/2020 23:27

I’m totally in awe of how he speaks so eloquently, without stumbling, umming & erring, or fudging up his sentences.

WhatsTheFrequencyKennneth · 14/05/2020 23:28

@frumpety its from 30th March

Lostnameperson · 14/05/2020 23:29

Yes it has perking, a cherry-picked snippet which suits their agenda.
I also went to the Gresham site to find out when it was actually recorded & what else was said.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 14/05/2020 23:29

I'm not going to lie and say I'm not concerned. I am.

But FFS, we got over Spanish flu 100 years ago with none of the tech and advantages we have now. And we'll get over this too.

WhatsTheFrequencyKennneth · 14/05/2020 23:30

Sorry 30th April not March

Lostnameperson · 14/05/2020 23:30

It was from 30th April wasn’t it?

IcyWind · 14/05/2020 23:33

I love him

VenusTiger · 14/05/2020 23:35

Nice thread, I like him too.
Interestingly, though: he advises our government and yet I bet most pps here are Boris/govt bashers over the pandemic, even though Whitty is advising. Wink

ladyflower23 · 14/05/2020 23:35

He is the best thing to have come out of this. Love him

bumblenbean · 14/05/2020 23:36

Nice to see something positive, thanks OP!

Interesting that he said significant amount of people won’t even get it. Have we moved on from the prediction that c. 80% likely to contact it? Was that only if lockdown didn’t happen? The advice / predictions change so rapidly I can’t keep up ...

Grandmi · 14/05/2020 23:37

He is a very reassuring, unassuming guy ...he knows his stuff and makes me feel safe!! He is definitely not influenced by anyone and at times has politely disagreed with Boris...who actually is way out of his depth !! I was actually shocked at how disrespectful and shallow some of the MN posters were a few weeks ago because they thought he wasn’t good looking!!!

PerkingFaintly · 14/05/2020 23:40

Oh lord. That should have said, given on 30 April 2020.

Sorry, dates really matter with this, so of course that's where I put my mandatory typo.Blush

MayFayre · 14/05/2020 23:41

Such a lovely voice and gentle eyes. I could listen to him all day.

multivac · 14/05/2020 23:42

Yes, he's marvellous etc. But really, is NONE of you bothered about the 'nonetheless...' that so obviously comes with this?

PerkingFaintly · 14/05/2020 23:43

I shall attempt to redeem myself by saying that the transcript of the talk, complete with slides, can be read here:
s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/content.gresham.ac.uk/data/binary/3305/2020-04-30_Whitty_COVID19-T.pdf

VenusTiger · 14/05/2020 23:44

@MayFayre yes, he does have a lovely voice, very calming and grounded with a great bedside manner. He'd sound great as a pilot!

Justaboy · 14/05/2020 23:44

Cool calm concise and precise, facts and knowlegable.

Why do we have the listen to the comic BoJo?..

frumpety · 14/05/2020 23:45

It would be good to see the other 58 minutes of the lecture, as opposed to just this little 1.19 minutes long snippet. Will watch it tomorrow, need to go to bed Smile

rainbowlou · 14/05/2020 23:45

I think he is great and so reassuring, there have been some awful shallow comments made about him online that have made me feel so sad for him.

PerkingFaintly · 14/05/2020 23:51

Interesting that he said significant amount of people won’t even get it. Have we moved on from the prediction that c. 80% likely to contact it? Was that only if lockdown didn’t happen?

bumblenbean, I'm not sure which bit you're talking about? He doesn't say that in this clip.

He does say in this clip ( p6 of the transcript): "Of those who do get it, a significant proportion, exact number is not yet clear but it's certainly a significant proportion, have no symptoms at all - they get it without even realizing it."

He might talk later on about total numbers expected to get Covid, but I can't remember.

PerkingFaintly · 14/05/2020 23:56

@VenusTiger and your Wink

Chris Whitty, p19: "This use of a vaccine incidentally is the only situation where you would ever aim for herd immunity – population immunity- as a policy aim."

MyNameWas · 14/05/2020 23:57

Saving this so I can listen to it tomorrow
