NHS pay freeze

I don't want applause
I don't want to be treated a 'special'
I HATE all this hero worshipping

But .... Please please no more pay freezes. We only recently have come out of a pay freeze. I don't want to go back there.

:( So sad to hear a pay freeze is coming for NHS staff

(but I guess it's inevitable. The country is in a financial mess so only fair we all need to contribute to sorting it out. Just wish it wasn't the case! And I hope that the big earners (the billionaire and millionaire's) will be forced to contribute too - and won't get away with tax dodging etc.....

At the moment this is just newspaper speculation, prob from "government sources" just spouting stuff out to see what the reaction is.

CoronaLonaSad · 14/05/2020 00:35

Also just wondering if if Borris would have the balls to face the NHS staff that saved his life, and tell them face to face "thanks for all you did for me. I'm pleased you saved my life. But sorry, your pay will now be frozen for 2 years. Mine on the other hand will continue to rise and I might even write a book in the future about my experience as PM and being in ICU which is sure to earn millions."

They still believe their hype about the massive 3 year pay deal after the last freeze where most of us actually got less than 2% for 3 years .They will use that and cheer and clap again when they decide to freeze pay again.
A slap in the chops for putting our lives on the line, being redeployed etc but what we have come to expect from any government.

Starface · 14/05/2020 00:55

I agree. That would be nice.

But also, please don't be, and encourage others not to be, one of the turkeys who votes for Christmas the next time they offer us a deal. There was an option to reject it.

I haven't figured out yet how we hold our unions, especially those we aren't part of, to account for their abysmal interpretation of and communication of the deal. I expect a Tory government screw over public sector workers. Unions are literally paid to work against this rather than be handmaidens to it.

Smellbellina · 14/05/2020 00:57

Surely no one would vote for a party that wanted a pay freeze for NHS after this?

Starface · 14/05/2020 01:00

And actually, ensure you are in a union and use your vote. I really have no truck with people who moan but don't do what is clearly in their power to affect outcomes. Given the shockingly low proportions of those affected who did vote (something crazy like 10%), I guess I should see the Turkeys as better than these Lambs, who don't even engage and then moan when they get slaughtered...

I agree OP im a nurse and iv been fed up with the clapping for weeks.

If was lovely to see the public appreciate us for a couple of weeks, but now it just serves as a distraction from what should really be happening.

Thursday evenings make me cringe .

Actually there are lots of ways you see the Tories preparing to locate responsibility for problems in anyone but themselves in their narrative. Ppe shortages because staff are wasteful? Thanks Hancock.
I fully expect more subtler narratives like this.
And even I can see it is pretty hard to give NHS staff pay rises if you are hammering everyone else. Plus a bit of me thinks all the freebies will generate envy and backlash eventually.

Don't expect NHS workers to stay on this pedestal forever.

Or it might be a token rise which is taken back or more through tax changes. Lots of people found their take home actually reduced in the last deal when they hit top of band 7 due to pension thresholds. That was buried in the detail. Another interesting trick.
