At last it includes care home deaths, not just hospital deaths.

What an utterly awful figure.

The UK is a global laughing stock for our government's handling of us
I would agree with anyone criticising the government's handling of Corona, but anyone laughing about our high number of deaths is pretty despicable

Sparklfairy · 13/05/2020 11:57

Well actually @Sadie789 I think it's important to know the wider impact this virus is having.

How many people have committed suicide because of the mental health effects of lockdown?
How many people haven't sought medical help or had to wait too long for an ambulance because of the disruption of CV and died as a result?
How many people have (and will) die sooner because of cancelled operations for long term serious illnesses?

What is put on an individual's death certificate and whether the family are happy with it or not is largely irrelevant. If COVID-19 wasn't here, 57,000 people would not have died between 21st march and 1st may. They may have died later, but it really is that simple.

@Sparklfairy Oh yes, the death toll in China was so accurately reported there 😂

yoikes · 13/05/2020 16:38

We are not the most populous county in europe
Stop lying

myangelalex · 13/05/2020 16:38

@ssd Can't disagree with that, but so many countries have done the same, USA, Italy and so on. God help the African continent as a whole. They can barely feed much of the population! So pandemic planning was bottom of the list.

yoikes · 13/05/2020 16:41

So why are the least populous areas in the UK having infection hot spots?

Hmmm?

myangelalex · 13/05/2020 16:44

The UK is a global laughing stock for our government's handling of us

What planet are you living on? Almost the whole world has handled this badly. Nobody is laughing at anyone. We're all burying the dead and mourning them, along with living a life no one would have though possible a year ago.

Maybe you should stop playing politics and look at the government who caused this shitstorm

Sparklfairy · 13/05/2020 19:46

@myangelalex my point exactly!? Confused

You can't rely on accurate or honest reporting about Covid-19 from the Government (of any country). But people die once, and that death is recorded and has been for years (since 1993 in the UK I think?). These are the only numbers which truly can't be manipulated.

YeOldeTrout · 13/05/2020 20:04

The FT are MODELLING the death count.
They explicitly say MODEL in their articles.
They didn't count real people, they extrapolated from real counts.
Model. Guess. Estimate.

Official death toll in UK now over 40,000.

I don’t believe other countries figures. Ridiculous figures from Brazil, USA and Russia. Haven’t even started on Nigeria, Mexico.
