“ If you don’t like being locked down you are free to get a job as an essential worker - supermarkets need people for example.”

I think I might have scored work - fingers crossed

But yes, lockdown was insane and infections peaked long before. I’m not the only vulnerable category MNer who thinks this.

Yes, I would much rather we’d been like America. Look how well Florida did with such a high elderly population.

SeperatedSwans · 12/05/2020 14:04

Bull shit are the majority scared. You have young single professionals doing fuck all except boasting, drinking and tanning.

I know I'm in that age demographic so my social media is full of it.

Meanwhile I'm here 30 alone, lone parent busting my fucking ass to work, pay tax and keep this economy going.

Those on furlough should be forced to do something else now, they've had 8 weeks, enough is enough, you want a national fucking effort then join in, don't sit from your living room doing a fucking zoom quiz drinking gin at 2pm, start doing something constructive.

Government should just force the majority in to some sort of national service on a rota and get them disinfecting streets, public transport and so on. Delivering food to the working, befriending the isolated.

There's loads that could be done safely, bit no they are too scared, they might die oh the poor petals aged 25-55 with no health conditions. Takes the fucking piss.

Yeah I'm on a fucking rant. So what.

Joan0fSarc · 12/05/2020 14:04

@stoptherideiwanttogetoff I've already explained that comment and how I expressed myself poorly. No need to be so superior.

Yes, apparently a few months negates all the tax furloughed people have been paying their entire lives and suddenly 'we', whoever 'we' are, are currently subsiding their lavish lifestyles by, you know, paying the same tax we were before anyway.

Yes it's interesting. I would bet that some people furloughed have been net tax payers for years & now others see them as scroungers! Bizarre

imsooverthisdrama · 12/05/2020 14:04

Anyone who knows me on here knows I cannot stand this government.... However I think they are absolutely correct in doing this.
Absolutely I'm the same , it's fair that some will go back part time and the cost is employer and government.
Those that are resentful think about it , it will mainly be the industry's that can't open or not to full capacity like the hospitality industry etc.
This way hopefully a lot can come back from July onwards even if it's part time .
If this doesn't happen all these restaurants, bars , gyms other leisure facilities etc may never be able to open .
So yeah I get that while your working and we are sat home baking as you say that when you are able to go and spend your money on leisure that there will be places open to go to .

Marylou2 · 12/05/2020 14:05

I imagine most people on furlough aren't actively enjoying it. They must know that they are at the highest risk of losing their jobs. There'll be lots of details to follow on this scheme such as the 80% being a 50/50 for many companies. That will force a show of hands on those who genuinely expect employees to return after this mess and those who are just using furlough as an expensive alternative to Universal Credit. When they're forced to use their own money redundancies will come thick and fast. Sorry for those involved.

Armi · 12/05/2020 14:05

I think this is sensible. We don’t know yet how things will work when schools go back - it’s likely some children will only be in school part time or the schools may have to close again because of a second wave. This way, it’s possible for some (not all, I know) to manage arrangements more easily.

SpokeTooSoon · 12/05/2020 14:05

I think it’s total madness. Paying people full whack to sit at home and do nothing. Where is the money coming from?

Mirrorxx · 12/05/2020 14:06

I am shocked it will continue at such a high amount for so long. It should be cut to the same amount as universal credit and only for small companies who can’t afford to pay their staff and have no possible way for working

LilacTree1 · 12/05/2020 14:06

Spoke the money comes from people working and paying tax.

OddBoots · 12/05/2020 14:08

I do think there is scope to do something about accrued annual leave on furlough though or all those who have been furloughed for the whole period will have built up lots of it. I am not sure what they should do but even letting people roll it over for a couple of years could cause problems, not least further resentment.

foggybits · 12/05/2020 14:08

It should be cut to the same amount as universal credit

So people should potentially lose their homes because the gov has closed their workplace?

LilacTree1 · 12/05/2020 14:08

“ when you are able to go and spend your money on leisure that there will be places open to go to .”

Only the super rich will have money to spend. And how will leisure open with social distancing? It will be super expensive for super rich.

Joan0fSarc · 12/05/2020 14:09

Government should just force the majority in to some sort of national service on a rota and get them disinfecting streets, public transport and so on

So basically community service for committing the crime of being temporarily unable to work? Don't be ridiculous.

Shame on them for making the best of a shit situation. I'm genuinely sorry you're having an awful, stressful time but there is absolutely no need to be so unpleasant about those who have no idea if they have a job to go back to, and are just getting by the best they can. Social media isn't a true representation anyway - the vast majority airbrush their lives on SM. Given the response they're likely to get from you judging by your comment, your friends are not likely to confide how they're really feeling.

Besides, they've paid their taxes and will do again if they have jobs to go back to. They're entitled to help when they need it, just as you would be.

@OddBoots

My works has said all holidays accrued during furlough will be assumed as taken during furlough so we won’t have any extra. (Absolutely fair)

Joan0fSarc · 12/05/2020 14:11

Also @SeperatedSwans, someone I know died on Saturday from Covid. He was in his 30s with no underlying health conditions and he's left a wife and two young DDs.

Young healthy people do die from it. And how do you know for sure that none of your friends have underlying health issues anyway?

OP posts:
Marylou2 · 12/05/2020 14:11

Totally agree on not accruing Annual leave . If part of a workforce has been furloughed and the rest have worked the injustice of furloughed workers returning and then getting another month or so of paid annual leave would be unacceptable.

VimtoCordial · 12/05/2020 14:12

I've been self employed about 18 months. My 18/19 tax return doesn't entitle me to whatever the scheme is for many self employed as I wasn't self employed long enough and there was a bit of crossover with working, so I'm on UC.

This pays £94 per week, but if I have any income at all I have to declare it and it gets taken off the £94. I think it's a rate of 63p for every pound earned. I completed my 19/20 tax return before the extension was up for those filing late for the year before. It feels very unfair as I've work hard to build up my business and would be able to get considerably more on the other scheme, and would also be able to earn something if work that could be done safely came my way.

As it is, I am stuck on having under £100 a week.

MarshaBradyo · 12/05/2020 14:12

They're entitled to help when they need it, just as you would be.

Help when needed is usually much lower than 80% / full wages. So that poster wouldn’t get the same help unless furloughed too.

Of course people are relieved. But another four months is a big deal. I just hope companies are picking up a significant chunk of the shared cost.

Hadjab · 12/05/2020 14:12

Anyone on furloughed should at least be looking and applying for any job they can in the hope they find something, as they have a real danger of being unemployed shortly anyway. They’d be a fool not to be at least looking

That’s true - I should totes find a job that doesn’t exist, and change employers in this current climate, rather than try and ride this out and return to the job I love...🙄

SeperatedSwans · 12/05/2020 14:13

Well we're all in the same boat, except some of us are rowing and others are whipping us whilst sipping pins. So perhaps yes let's get them start rowing in turn even if it's a few hours a week. 🤷🏻‍♀️

None of my friends are worried living in their retired parents homes, they even tell me how amazing it is and long may carona continue, except me, the nurse, and the DCI.

BamboozledandBefuddled · 12/05/2020 14:14

the money comes from people working and paying tax

The money also comes from the tax that a furloughed person has paid into the system and is continuing to pay while furloughed.

MarshaBradyo · 12/05/2020 14:14

I understand people want to ride it out but if there is a huge shake up when companies have to contribute it might be better to look now.

AllsortsofAwkward · 12/05/2020 14:14

Theres going to be a lot redundancies, companys wont want to pay out.

imsooverthisdrama · 12/05/2020 14:14

Yeah I'm having a great time !!
Do you realise how offensive that is ?
What do you suggest we do ?
Walk the streets with a sign saying we are lazy fuckers !!!
I'm jealous of you working , I'd love to work but if I can't go back I can't go back .
The government will not open bars and restaurants until July earliest and that impacts mine and other people's jobs , can you not get that into your head !!.
If your resentful because of colleagues at home while you work then speak to you employer, but it's most probably they either furloughed them or make them redundant so either way it's not going to affect you work wise as this is temporary. I suppose it would make you happy if everyone was made redundant.
Honest to god there really are some stupid selfish people on here .!!!
