Thank goodness.

@Alex50 I have so many female friends (and I emphasis female) who have asked to be furloughed because they said they couldn’t cope with looking after children and working (even if DH was also wfh). They are all now saying schools should not go back until at least September. I think a lot will be shocked they don’t have jobs to go back to them.

eyesbiggerthanstomach · 12/05/2020 15:43

I don't buy the argument that furloughed workers are sat at home worrying and miserable

I can assure you at the company I work for we had no choice in the matter and very few are actually happy to be at home.

I have been at home worrying constantly. My dose of anti depressants has increased and I am concerned for my mental health. I have had suicidal thoughts. There is no purpose or structure to my day and I am fairly certain that redundancies are coming.

Who will they make redundant? The employees at home who they have realised they don't need to run their business.

As a single mum to a toddler, I have no idea how I will pay the mortgage if I am made redundant.

StrawberryBlondeStar · 12/05/2020 15:44

@Marylou2 they haven’t announced it - could be completely wrong, but that’s what I would do if I was chancellor.

He can also turn round and say “we have companies time to adapt and develop. If they make you redundant it’s their fault for not adapting not ours”.

Nanalisa60 · 12/05/2020 15:48

I really can’t believe some people are being so horrible, most people on this scheme are probably on under £10 an hour, they work in shops that can’t open, hotels that can’t open, bars pubs and restaurants that can’t open, this is not there fault. They can’t work from home!! As it is they struggle to pay there rent and live week to week.
Some people on mumsnet are just so me me me really don’t give a dame about the people that are less fortunate then them SHAME ON YOU!!
Thank good Rishi Sunak is a better human being that some of you.

onemorepringle · 12/05/2020 15:49

I agree Nana.

esjee · 12/05/2020 15:50

They must have weighed up the options and decided that extending furlough was economically preferable to the alternative. They're not doing this out of the goodness of their hearts.

Alex50 · 12/05/2020 15:54

@StrawberryBlondeStar I can understand about childcare, luckily my youngest is 14 so I don’t have to worry. Anyone who is furloughed and not worried about there job is very short sighted. There will be 1000’s unemployed going for one job, any job, even minimum wage after this.

PicsInRed · 12/05/2020 15:57

The scheme is too generous becauseyouwould have more money?

Yeeeesss, without having to pay a fortune for travel costs and childcare. That's a huge portion of the budget.

Marylou2 · 12/05/2020 15:58

@StrawberryBlondeStar

Me too! I like your thinking.

imsooverthisdrama · 12/05/2020 16:02

The scheme is too generous because you would have more money?
Really do you know everyone's personal circumstances do you ?.
I could be jealous of my younger co workers who live at home and the disposable income that they have that are saving a fortune because they are not at the pub every weekend etc . I didn't have much disposable income anyway , I've saved on petrol and the hairdressers but I'm hardly rich . I've still got dc eating me out of house & home , bills to pay etc .
And those that say you can have a mortgage holiday yes I could look into that and furloughed scheme meant I didn't need to yet . I'd have to pay the mortgage after 3 months after that I'd be stuck . So yes I'm grateful to the furloughed scheme that I can keep a roof over my head and that I'm not at risk of loosing my home , that I've spent all my life working for to loose at no fault of my own .
I suppose it would make some people happy if I did , because bless you all work so hard your on mumsnet on a Tuesday afternoon. Hmm

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 12/05/2020 16:02

The fact that a Tory government are effectively enacting a Corbyn style wet dream means to me that the alternative would have been economical armaggedon. It also means that this virus aint going away anytime soon, originally Boris said three months to see it off, now I think the penny has dropped that there is no bounce back to normality as the virus will just get sooner.

Rishi is giving aug/sept/oct for companies to wean off furloughing, those that think they will still have reduced trade come November will be making redundancies during that time.

I still think it's open to inappropriate use by some employers. I'm currently furloughed, not because I need to be, but because my employer has freely admitted they'll furlough anyone they can to get the 2.5k a month saving. The company is doing ok in the current climate, it's not been badly affected (yet) although who knows what will happen down the line.

SudokuBook · 12/05/2020 16:07

I think the “them and us” vis a vis people on furlough is depressing. My husband would go back to work tomorrow. His industry has been closed by the government until at least July so he can’t. I’m working from home. I’d rather be in my situation than his.

Loving the suggestions about just getting jobs in care homes. It hasn’t taken long for their jobs just to be viewed again as any old unskilled job that anyone can do.

Blondieg · 12/05/2020 16:15

Picsinred
Not all of us pay childcare or spend large sums on travel to work.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/05/2020 16:19

we have had months to get our heads around this now we need to find ways to be productive, not winge about how unfair everything is

I totally agree, but on the subject of having had "months to get our heads around this", I'm wondering what the hell the government's been doing in this time. As so often we're behind on creating any sort of "plan", behind on testing, behind on border controls (what the hell was the point in only starting them in June??) and much, much more

Already we see other european nations either reopening hospitality or making firm plans to do so, and we're whining about October even though cases and deaths are dropping all the time

It's quite true there may still be a few who need support then, but this wholly negative approach just isn't helping anyone

amber763 · 12/05/2020 16:26

So many wankers on this thread. If you're still working, good for you. You are lucky. One PP saying she'll kill herself if it goes past June because she still has a job and is still going to work?? Let Covid get you? How fucking insensitive and disrespectful to people who have lost loved ones. Jesus Christ.

I've been furloughed. Its a struggle. Over half of my colleagues have been laid off. If I was on UC I'd have less than £100 a week and no way to pay my mortgage. It's terrifying. Honestly, some of you people are dicks.

Pomegranatepompom · 12/05/2020 16:28

@imsooverthisdrama well people aren’t working 24/7 your comment is as ridiculous as the them/us ones.

PrimeroseHillAnnie · 12/05/2020 16:31

My husband has lost over a stone in weight worrying about his job. He cried Like a baby when he heard this. He thinks he should be OK. There are a lot of people desperately worried . Well done Rishi.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/05/2020 16:33

Who on earth would request furlough?

How long have you got?

Just as one example there are countless council maintenance staff round here demanding exactly that, hoping to leave behind a massive amount of work which could be done perfectly safely, hire themselves out on the black in the meantime and enjoy their full pay

Most worrying of all, some have been allowed to do exactly that

Paddingtonthebear · 12/05/2020 16:34

I think this thread may be the one that pushes me off mumsnet for good.

Liking80 · 12/05/2020 16:38

To those who are resentful of the Furloughed, it is not our fault. I live alone & have struggled with the isolation and lack of purpose not being at work.
Fortunately, I already did some volunteer work for a food charity and so can continue with this. There are actually more people wanting to do volunteering than opportunities available. In normal times we struggle to get volunteers but this shows that people are not content to sit on their bums & want to contribute to society.
Furthermore we are tax payers, continue to pay whilst on Furlough & will when hopefully back in work.
Many of you working will be dependent directly or indirectly on the whole community to use your products and services. Just maybe trying to save the jobs of the Furloughed community is also helping save yours.

MarshaBradyo · 12/05/2020 16:39

EyesBigger that sounds hard on you. Are your co-workers wfh?

empod · 12/05/2020 16:43

I would like to say that I have been furloughed, I have not received any money since my last wage in March. I do not have a wide screen television and do not sit in the sun drinking beer all day. I have always worked in a full time position but my current role is home schooling my two young children, I also see this as trying to keep them safe and healthy as we try to avoid COVID-19. For many reasons I cannot wait to go back to work.

SeperatedSwans · 12/05/2020 16:52

So if every furloughed worker can't wait to go back to work, they are all so miserable, every single one of the ready to go back tomorrow, why such the uproar on lifting the lockdown and being told to go back to work if you can in a covid complaint workplace because the R rate is below 1 🤔

Oldmrswasherwoman · 12/05/2020 16:53

Some awful human beings on this thread and a massive lack of empathy.

If a conservative Government feels it is necessary to bankroll 80% of millions of people's wages, then the alternative must be absolute economic and social devastation from which their political party would never recover.

imsooverthisdrama · 12/05/2020 16:56

well people aren’t working 24/7 your comment is as ridiculous as the them/us ones.
Sorry did that offend you ! Hmm
