DH's job is ok for now but it's reassuring that this will still be in place if things start to get worrying. And lots of friends/family will so relieved.

I'm watching now, I really like Rishi.

As a waitress I'm very relieved, I'll be one of the last back to work and I'm on minimum wage so I was scared of a drop to 60%.

Also very reassuring to know that even if the restaurant that I work at don't have full time hours for me at first then I can still work part time and pay my bills. I can't wait to get back to work but have been worried that there just won't be the hours for me when the restaurant does open.

Yes, but what will the contribution from employers be from July? If a business does the sums, there could still be redundancies sadly.

I'll wait and see what the conditions are as I guess it's still a chance of 60% and also what happens with those parents who won't have childcare (i.e. school holidays)

Would you not be thinking about looking for work in another industry? You may be struggling for a while and vulnerable to redundancy anyway if your employer can't make things viable.

Also businesses (especially hospitality ) will take into account what staff are required for potentially very limited operations in terms of people allowed in. Remember zero hours are very common anyway in the sector.

I'm a bit confused by this considering the roadmap published and the focus on getting schools reopened. I am probably missing something though.

You might not be relieved when you realise that the government aren't paying for it all and are saying that employers will have to share the cost.

The government get to be the ones looking generous whilst employers look like the bad guy when they cut jobs because they can not retain all their staff on furlough.

The extension is something of a trick of slight of hand. And a lot of people WILL lose their job due to the changes to the scheme.

@Floatyboat of course, obviously if needs must then I have no choice.

The restaurant gives me flexible shifts that work around My Dh's shifts so one of us can be at home with young DCs so ideally I'd like to keep my job there. It is a big company and I have worked there for a long time so, as long as the company doesn't go bust, then I stand a good chance of keeping my job.

But I am well prepared that I may have to get another job, thinking about night shifts at a warehouse etc.

The announcement today gives me hope that it won't come to that though.

Rushi Sunak is really a secret Labour chancellor, the extension of the furlough scheme is one of the few things the govt has got right.

IF the economy starts to pick up, its only right employers pay a contribution toward salaries, they have had a wages holiday for 4 months after all.

Companies having to contribute will lead to some job losses I think

The employers will be expected to offer part time hours and the wage will be made up to 80% by the govt. Of course if workers are not going back part time there will be redundancies. I doubt employers will be able to take back everyone, even part time. I think it's a good decision by the government to make employers share the cost and urge people back to phased work.

This is amazing news, all being well, we wouldn’t have to make any of the team redundant and slowly build up hours as the restaurant gets busier and customers confidence returns.

@Teddypops that thought had crossed my mind, too. Clearly they're not expecting much to change before October. It's not like the Tories to be so supportive of workers - there must be good reason for it.

I'm surprised it's still 80 percent I thought it was going to cut. I wonder if anything else will be given for self employed people I know we are suppose to be given a grant but that was for 3 months.
