Thank goodness.

@Drama123

There are still work places unable to open.
Also these workplaces (as they are in phase 3) are likely the ones to be closed down again while we keep R under control.

Pomegranatepompom · 12/05/2020 13:14

How will we pay for all this?

Also will cause resentment for people who are working.

Dragongirl10 · 12/05/2020 13:14

Rushi Sunak is really a secret Labour chancellor,

This is such rubbish^ read up about Rishi's background..

The situation is bad whatever, either not protecting people by forcing them back to work or accruing tremendous debt.....There are sadly no good options, but l am glad that this gives some protection for longer...

I do hope that people who are home will use the time to re address what they can do for work going forward and retrain etc, to avoid a cliff edge of unemployment later....

savehalloween · 12/05/2020 13:15

Yeah it really doesn't work like that.

Excited for later in the year when I can buy a can of coke for £6273837363 Grin

Babbas · 12/05/2020 13:15

Great news that employers share the load and offer part time hours which many staff will be pleased to accept. Obviously unscrupulous and millionaire businesses are going to take full advantage, they need provisions in place to ensure the businesses that most need this get it and those that can survive should do so without tax payers assistance.

It does mean the full time workers and front line workers who have not stopped working will get no benefit. I'm working full time and have been doing the work of art least 4 people who have been furloughed. The work we do has not slowed down and it's been very stressful to manage.

Stuckforthefourthtime · 12/05/2020 13:15

I don't think this means the government know more etc etc. They are helping a phased return in the world of social distancing. If a workplace (school / restaurant / nursery etc) can only open if half the people are allowed in, some staff might be made redundant. This will help prevent that

Totally agree. People are looking for crazy conspiracies. Only 3 year groups are going back part time in June - and even that remains a maybe - and some more businesses opening, or other years going in, in a limited way, from July (and again that's a maybe).

A lot of posters on here seem to think that after lockdown, things could be switched back on. Even in countries with far more successful lockdowns than ours, limitations and furlough equivalents remain in place and will for some time.

vanillandhoney · 12/05/2020 13:15

It may not be for everyone. I imagine it will be for certain industries by then (eg. hospitality and tourism) which are being forced to remain closed for a properly extended period of time.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/05/2020 13:16

I really want to know what is happening with the SE. Obviously we don't have employers to contribute.

TwentyViginti · 12/05/2020 13:17

this makes me wonder whether the government know alot more than they are letting on!! are we really fucked until then

That's the first thought that went through my head too. This is so shit.
^^
Mine too. In fact I cried. Fucking hell.

millerjane · 12/05/2020 13:17

I am extremely jealous. I work for an ISP (engineer) and have never been more stressed/busy.

savehalloween · 12/05/2020 13:17

Me too.

As the SE help doesn't prevent us working, I imagine the part time return to work would just look like 60% then 40% of what is on offer currently.

The assumption being our work is gradually returning.

Would hopefully make sense for me, but for those in other industries who are still getting no work, it may well not

Cuddlecouch · 12/05/2020 13:18

Great for full time workers who haven't stopped and who followers expect to continue to work with bigger workloads. Looks like we'll be doing ask the extra work until October, and thereafter a huge global depression. My employer seems happy with the wage holiday and has remarked that they're surprised output is still good with less than half the workforce. They won't be rushing to offer everyone furloughed part time work.

savehalloween · 12/05/2020 13:19

I can understand the resentment and jealously but remember the grass is always greener.

My business has been changed and potentially destroyed overnight. The money I get from the government is not what I would have earned if this hadn't happened. And I have no idea if the business will survive this long term.

I would love to be busy and stressed about my workload right now.

gamerchick · 12/05/2020 13:20

Also will cause resentment for people who are working

So what do you suggest? I'm genuinely interested.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 12/05/2020 13:20

@Kazzyhoward - did you know that the UK only finished paying off their debt to the US for WWII in 2006? It will be a similar thing.

The extension of the scheme makes you realise that this year is going to be a total write-off - future historians might call it 'The Lost Year'. Christmas celebrations will be a non-starter and we will be lucky if we are anywhere near 'normal' again by this time next year. Sorry!

ScarfLadysBag · 12/05/2020 13:20

In terms of the SE, there had been suggestions that the income ceiling for eligibility will drop to £30,000, but that was when the 60% furlough was also being suggested, so they may have gone back to the drawing board a bit on that. I wouldn't be surprised if they extended in its current form till the end of July, like the furlough scheme, and then lowered the income ceiling or changed the percentage.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/05/2020 13:20

Rushi Sunak is really a secret Labour chancellor

Quite so - but it comes to something when even the shadow chancellor's raised concerns about the scheme becoming an addiction

And as regards school holidays and childcare, that's no more the government's job to sort out than it would be in more normal times once childcare providers are back

ginsparkles · 12/05/2020 13:20

I suspect the option of part time is in part to help parents as the kids are unlikely to be back full time and we will struggle for holiday cover this year with shielding grandparents. I'm in retail so this is really a interesting development for me.

Cleanmean · 12/05/2020 13:21

Was not expecting that! Me and dh both working full time and stressed to the max whilst furloughed colleagues are on social media baking, sunbathing, gardening..... It's not sustainable.

Paddingtonthebear · 12/05/2020 13:22

My workplace is unlikely to reopen this year. They currently have no income so it’s great the government want to share the cost of furlough but if the employer has zero income to pay their share then they won’t be able to afford to keep staff on, part time or not. I think a lot of industries will have to consider redundancies unfortunately.

ssd · 12/05/2020 13:23

Anyone who knows me on here knows I cannot stand this government.... However I think they are absolutely correct in doing this.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 12/05/2020 13:24

Boris telling people to go to work if they can and Rishi extending their furlough scheme until October? Doesn't exactly I still any confidence in the Government, which is what people need right now. Do they even talk to each other?

Well some industries the government ordered to close and I expect that is why this scheme is extended. They will pay for those industries all the time they order them to close.
However some businesses were not told to close and have quite honestly taken the piss with this furloughed scheme. Those business will be encouraged back to work, and forced to do so if they still continue to take the piss and take advantage of the scheme.

the government can literally print money if they so wish. They found billions to bail out the banks, they can find the money for this It worries me we let people like you vote to be honest. Do you honestly think they just simply print money?? Wtf? 😂

Anyone on furloughed should at least be looking and applying for any job they can in the hope they find something, as they have a real danger of being unemployed shortly anyway. They’d be a fool not to be at least looking

Kazzyhoward · 12/05/2020 13:25

How will we pay for all this?

Because the costs/consequence are worse if we don't.

We need businesses/employees ready to hit the ground running when they're able to. An existing "moth balled" business can be up and running within a week or two, but a new replacement business could take a few months to start from scratch.

People being made redundant en-masse would cause massive problems with debt, mortgage repossessions, forced house sales, etc., which would cause a house price crash affecting millions more.

It's the same scenario as the bank bail outs - the consequences of not bailing them out would likewise have been far worse.

SeperatedSwans · 12/05/2020 13:25

Great so I get to work full time pay taxes all throughout this pandemic at risk in the community so 7.5 million can sit and do nothing till October, then I'll have to work and deal with the consequences of a great depression on our particular service, which will be under mass pressure and stress as people loose homes.

🙈 This is a fucking nightmare! Let it end, covid kill me now I'm done with this horseshit. I may actually kill myself if this goes on past June.

Alsohuman · 12/05/2020 13:25

I'm working full time and have been doing the work of art least 4 people who have been furloughed

If this is true and one person’s doing five people’s work, why are five people employed in the first place? There are going to be a lot of employers reducing their workforce by the autumn. Ironically the furlough scheme is going to highlight just how many unnecessary jobs there are in our economy.
