Why only primary school going back?

Just that really, why do they only want to get primary school back?

@Hunnybears Yes, hence or there’s enough immunity.. It can’t always be wiping through people at this rate, hopefully. I have no qualms about home educating for the next year or beyond if needed.

MileyWiley · 10/05/2020 20:05

It's not really that confusing YR and Y1 need a lot more attention and support/ supervision preventing parents WFH than the older school years. It's not about Y2-Y5 being able to be home alone 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️. I strongly believe other early years provisions will also be open on 1st June if not before. Possibly not nursery classes in schools though - schools have no legal obligation towards those. Also agree with the need for Y6, Y10, Y12 to have time back in school before the summer.

Hadenoughfornow · 10/05/2020 20:05

It’s ridiculous.Schools cannot keep your DC safe from covid 19.

But the evidence, every single bit of evidence , suggests that children are very low risk for Covid 19.

Not no risk, but incredibly low risk.

derxa111 · 10/05/2020 20:05

How does it work for all the teachers that teach R, Y1 & 6 that have kids in other yrs that haven't gone back?

RedskyAtnight · 10/05/2020 20:05

I'd assumed the opening schools at all before the summer was a sop to public opinion (which is why Y6 has been picked as it's deemed important for them to "formally" move on from primary school).

I thought Reception and Y1 as they are the year groups that do more active learning, it's summer and they will just be encouraged to play outside for a lot of it.

It was actually useful in terms of the year groups that weren't mentioned. I'm quite glad that I can tell my DD (Year 9) that she definitely won't be back in school until at least September. Not knowing has made it hard for her to focus; there's lots of stuff being sent round on social media about whether they will be back on 11th May, 1st June ...

Parker231 · 10/05/2020 20:05

@FreakStar - easier to work from home if you don’t have Reception and year 1 children to look after.

MsMeNz · 10/05/2020 20:06

Well I have a year 1,4 and 6 so I'll have to run two to school while the most scholarly one has to stay home with me 🙄 while I try my best to wfh assuming work is ok with that

LifeAfterBreastCancer · 10/05/2020 20:07

Year Six certainly haven't "basically finished primary school". That's a ridiculous assertion.

lilgreen · 10/05/2020 20:07

As usual, everyone and their dog are told at the same time as schools.

BunsyGirl · 10/05/2020 20:07

@ABucketOfShells Homeschool your children then. I don’t want to homeschool mine so they will be going back as soon as they can.

For those saying that young children can’t social distance, I don’t think they will be required to. The nursery is open at my DC’s school (age 1-4) and the children play together as normal.

MileyWiley · 10/05/2020 20:07

Strongly suspect pre schools will prioritise children transitioning to reception over younger children too.

Hadenoughfornow · 10/05/2020 20:08

derxa the school will still be open for key worker children i imagine.

Surely the kids could also go to school?

Or they manage the same way that many others are managing just now?

NiknicK · 10/05/2020 20:08

I don’t get why they have said reception year 1 and year 6? Year 4 and 5 kids need “childcare” too. I do get year 6 going back at all as their sats aren’t going ahead and if secondary schools are closed there will be no transition days for them. They’ll essentially be going back for their leavers party! I’d have thought hear 10’s and 12’s would have been a priority and before anyone says anything I don’t have kids in either of those years. In was under the impression they would be a priority considering they will be sitting GCSEs and A levels next year and will have missed out on a lot of their education.

Itisasecret · 10/05/2020 20:09

What people do not realise is Early Years and Year One reading is KEY absolutely key. It doesn’t matter that other European countries manage later start dates. Year One and Year Two are expected to be a certain standard. It’s all about DATA. Once you realise that, you’ll understand.

Greenpop21 · 10/05/2020 20:09

Well our R teacher has just lost a parent to covid so is not working, year 1/2 teacher shielding so this will be fun.Hmm

@Hadenoughfornow

The teachers & police I know haven't sent their kids to school during this time as they have been wfh so kept the kids there.

Namechangeapril20 · 10/05/2020 20:10

What about this group, what about that group, what about what about what about.

It was always going to be phased. They were never going to bring all back at once. They had to make a decision somewhere and groups were always going to be left out.

No one is saying working from home with p2 aged children is easy. No one is saying a p3 child should stay at home unsupervised. No one is saying that the education, social development and welfare of one age group is any more or less important than the other.

But they could not bring every year group back at once, and people would be pissed off and up in arms no matter what years were picked/left out.

1981m · 10/05/2020 20:10

I think every year but exam years and reception and year 1 will go back September now.

MileyWiley · 10/05/2020 20:11

@TeddyIsaHe completely agree.

OddBoots · 10/05/2020 20:12

If does seem very unreasonable of them to make these statements and not share the thinking behind he plans, we are left to guess the reasoning. I hope there is some actual reasoning behind.

LuckyMarmiteLover · 10/05/2020 20:12

Not read TWFT but I’d don’t understand why year 6 are going back? Aren’t they similar to year 11 and 13 who have had their exams cancelled? Maybe they could have a transition day at their new secondary school but can’t see why they need to be actually back at their primary school?

ThSims · 10/05/2020 20:14

I have a two year old child with autism who was signed up to a special needs nursery just before lockdown, does anybody know where we are likely to stand IRT when he can actually go? Please @ me if you have any idea

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 10/05/2020 20:14

@redskyatnight

They didn't say that other years wouldn't be going back before September. I have copied below the exact words said:

"In step two – at the earliest by June 1 – after half term – we believe we may be in a position to begin the phased reopening of shops and to get primary pupils back into schools, in stages, beginning with reception, Year 1 and Year 6.
Our ambition is that secondary pupils facing exams next year will get at least some time with their teachers before the holidays. And we will shortly be setting out detailed guidance on how to make it work in schools and shops and on transport."

So they are hoping to get year 9 back before school holidays and R, Y1 and Y6 is just the beginning of a phased return.

Hadenoughfornow · 10/05/2020 20:14

derxa most police do not work from home.

But how does my DH manage to go to work? I am wfh so I look after kids.

Teachers may had partners who can look after child.

If not, then they use the school childcare provision surely?

I don't get how that is different from many other families.
